I was a sophomore when Columbine happened. School shootings were already an epidemic by that day in 1999. My own city had suffered thru a school shooting a couple years before. I can't say that video games,. music, or politics were the reason those two killed so many of their classmates. Maybe Bullying was the greatest reason. It is well known they were bullied and harassed daily. School officials didn't take the bullying seriously, authorities also swept the whole blog/journal threats under the rug. The failure of adults allowed Columbine to happen. Bullying is one of the leading causes of death in our young people. Be it from gun violence or by taking their own lives.

The saddest part is that the incompetent police got away with their stupidity. Talk about justice.
I saw the Clutter home in the first story. When I lived in Kansas the owners were selling the home and there was a walkthrough. Such a sad story.
That photo of Omayra Sánchez is truly haunting. I've read that her aunt was also on her trapped legs. Apparently it was also a brick door that pinned her.

it's a weird thing to appriciate but I like that it's pointed out that Harris and Kelbold were not the only ones making 'shooting poses' Yes they were the fucked up ones that ended up famous and there were so many times adults shoud have intervened but this picture is often cited as "a big red flag" except... again they aren't the only ones.
I'd like to say 2 things about the columbine one, 1. Eric and Brooks cussed each other out and were laughing at each other, but when Brooks asked about the test, Eric actually said, "it doesn't matter anymore, go home". 2. The death toll was 15, but they did not kill 15 people, they killed 13 before shooting themselves. (2 people outside, 1 teacher in the hallway, and 10 in the library)
Thank you, Joel! I was looking forward to this one, the pictures give it an extra chilling feeling.
I read In Cold Blood (the book written about the first story) my senior year of highschool and it was really captivating. I was pleasantly surprised to hear you cover it, it was a cool throwback to my HS days.

The book by Truman Capote is better, in my opinion, as the author relays facts which have not been altered or adapted to fit into production values.

@@TowGunner Well, showing appreciation to someone who is busting it to entertain, educate, & work on a platform that is full of douche bags is sometimes necessary. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Joel is making a nice living, but all the time reading, searching, editing, etc… can be gruesome, especially as long as he’s done it, before gaining enough of an audience to make up for it, so as a fan & fellow human, I thought I’d try to share a bit of positivity. You must be the flip side to that coin, or just pissed that things aren’t going quite as well for you? Buck up though, it’ll get better!

I did a research paper on the Texas City explosion back in high school for a local history project (I live in a nearby town). People thought the city was actually being bombed, and I read an account from a teacher who was terrified, and didn't know whether to have the kids take cover or evacuate. The school was eventually evacuated, but the teacher's story was just wrenching.

I wonder though, if there was a way to prevent this(like simply just sticking with water to put out the original flames?). I'm not an expert by any means but I have feeling it was the captain being cheap instead using effective means to deal with the situation..

Well, the problem with parents and authorities "not taking it seriously" is that it is not a crime to have v!olent thoughts. Thought is not a crime, and if you ask any psychologist, every human being has v!olent and horrible thoughts that they don't act on. You can't arrest someone for Thinking Bad Things. Unfortunately, there is no way to truly prevent crime. Crime has happened for thousands of years and will continue to happen. It's very sad. I wish that we had better mental health services. But we shut down asylums because people were being ab*sed and because some people thought that holding people against their will was morally wrong. In a way, it is. But there is no way to determine when Bad Thoughts turn into Bad Actions without sending people to a psychologist. And that's expensive.
Thanks for the vid Lets Read!

I lived in Denver in the 1980s. My kindergarten teacher taught Klebold’s older brother the year after he taught me. We lived in Englewood, next to Littleton, for five years so Columbine was basically a neighborhood school. The last time I was there was spring break (from college; we didn’t live in Colorado any more but were visiting friends) 1999, a week before the shootings.
I’ve lived CO all my life so hearing about the Columbine shooting still tugs at my heart. I’ve been at the memorial that they made at the high school. I remember being in 9th grade when the shootings happen….flood of memories come back hearing this story.
