I still ride my snowboard jacket from 1994 😅 its ducked taped but still…its modern every 4th years and still kickin it…and yeah i was hiphop back then so the 17 year old me still fits

Great video. I’ve just started my mtb gear collection and I can see how it can become an addiction. My current bag is a USWE Patriot. I bought if for two reasons, the back protection and the one clip fastening across the chest. It looks a bit weird but it works so well. Even fully loaded I’ve not once felt it move when riding.

Doddy, after you mentioned the Knipex lock wrench a couple of months ago, I bought a 250mm pair. Thank you, they are brilliant, really helped with an akward compression joint.

Agreed on the ME7. Love my original ones and they are lasting really really well. I’ve never felt any discomfort from them and the dry quickly. The only downside is the ventilation is very good so in freezing conditions they can be cold. I have some AM5s for these colds days - which I originally bought for commuting.

Absolutely the bag thing. I'm using an MEC bike bag, since like 2010. I've swapped it out a couplr times but always come back to it. Everyday carry tourniquet, wound packing, chlorohexidine, chest seal and 2"x2" bandaids, & steri-strips. These have meant the difference between walking out or finishing the ride versus a helicopter ride 3 times since 1997. Cheers Doddy!

When it comes to packs for any exercise, I've always been picky, the more lightweight and vest-like fit it is, the better. Absolutely love the Salomon advanced skins. Feels like a vest when not loaded up and has the ability to stuff loads of things in if necessary. Although it tends to be running specific it works a charm when I'm out on my bike

On the backpack question; I have a backpack I use on the motorcycle, a "RST Race Dept Premium Rucksack". Simply started using it for the mountain bike as well and it works fine. Probably a bit large for having with me on the trail, but I use my motorcycle to actually get to the trail and I can fit all my gear/change of clothes etc. into it

I have a Park Tool ‘AWS-5’ Allen key set that is silver stainless steel from back before they were blue. Love that old set!

Honestly the park tool pizza cutter is my most used park tool but on the topic of shoes if you want dh clip less shoes I would recommend the ride concepts transition. Do you mind doing a video specifically on riding gear?

Hi Doddy, like your self , I have my go to sure things. So many you can not get anymore. On the Gortex front I still have from the early 90's , but it in no way does it fit anymore, a Gortex vest by Gore clothing. Basically it was a vest, gilet style, very thin, that I would put on over my head and over my base layer in the winter. This basically meant no matter what I would wear on top, layers, short sleeved, thermal, long sleeved. On days where temperatures could fluctuate from hot on the climb where it breathed to nipple freezing descents where it blocked the chill, it was a leveler. Akin to old school news paper, but technically way more brilliant. ✌🏻

great video. glad it was long format. Have the repack but I use it for water as well. Filling it up is usually too much water, though. I always get paranoid that the lower zipper on the back is going to creep open and lose everything on the trail.

Great video; I always love to extra details Doddy adds to explain his opinion. I also can't help but wonder if sponsorship decisions get run past Doddy before approval, because it seems that the bigger GMBN sponsors are brands that Doddy was already using. As for more of these videos from Doddy? Yes please, I could listen to Doddy detailing his favourite tools, components, gear, or bikes for hours.

my Fox motorcycle Enduro waist bag. Great 3 pocket layup with elastic loops in each section - no more issues with gravity turning it into a jumble sale. Heavier duty than a lot of bike kit, but I'll take the weight penalty. My Gerber multi tool is next. Love it, and with my Park i-beam tool for stuff like chain breaker I'm set. Those are my faves, the rest is just practical and usually cost based choices.

I’d love to see a must have video for tools! Even coming from a Park guy 😄 - a good tool is a good tool. I just acquired an RWC enduro bearing press, and that thing is buttery smooth. Unbelievably easy to use on frame bearings and shock bushings.

The Bontrager Flash pump is good, the Joe Blow is superb.

Another superb video from someone who knows their stuff👌

I really enjoyed this segment Doddy. I found myself having many, if not all, of the same kinds of particularities. It would be wonderful to sit down with you and chat about all the different things that we have found that might be a bit unique. For example, I was a golfer and I found that FootJoy rain gear was the best shell kit I could find to commute by bicycle year round, and yes it was made of Gore-Tex. I have found another area that I am sure you will identify with: Gloves! Cycling gloves tend to be shite and fall apart much too easily & cost way too much. I use to sail and we always had very tough gloves to handle the sailboat ropes with and they had to be able to deal with water. So I began buying sailing gloves for my bicycling. The sailing gloves are a fraction of the price for traditional cycling gloves and they last for ever! I would love to see more videos like this Doddy and I think you and I would get along quite well. I still use my black Park AWS-4! Great vid BTW. My missus also likes my bag collection... Best-functionality bike backpack is my Deuter Transalpine 30 - good for commuting/work too. Most used has to be Berghaus Freeflow 20 - the old one with the trampoline back. Great for sweaty bods like me. Second most used bag though is a bog standard Lowe Alpine bumbag. No frills apart from adjustable volume and a key clip. Room for tools phone but not much more but tightens down nicely so it doesn't jump around.

Park's DT-2 brake rotor truing tool is essentially a perfect tool for the job, as is their BO-1 bottle opener......gotta add their Spork to my kit now!

I've got the same Park tools Allen key set, bought mine in 2002 and it's still going strong.

I use for my camera Jack Wolfskin ACS Photo Pack - best way ever to ventilation between the back and the backpack, it has a mesh hugging the back and empty space for the air to flow so you always get ventilation, you don't get your back so wet like on evoc or others

Keep in mind that people on the internet saying they're sponsored beforehand is no guarantee whatsoever of their subsequent gushing over the sponsor's products being honest praise. I agree with more or less all the comments (Apart from tubeless, which is a complete pox) and Gore clothing, which is ineffective in most conditions a jacket is needed for in the first place in high humidity climates such as Ireland and the UK for anyone who rides hard enough to really sweat, because there's almost no humidity difference between inside and outside the jacket, so moisture just condenses on the inside rather than passing through the membrane. The sad thing about all the shoes is that while SPD's are well covered, there's nothing on the market in flat pedal shoes that can survive actual mileage - that issue may be the only thing that may force me back to using SPDs, as significant cuts through the sole from the pedal pins, meaning wet feet if you stand in even shallow water, within 6 months is normal on five tens and Shimano's flat pedal shoes, but when FiveTens first came out they lasted a lot longer. I'm trying Rideconcepts for trails next, the first ones I bought have held up pretty well, but not exceptionally, for trials use.

Brilliant video. Also have a thing for jackets and still have the same park allen key set! For me, favourite kit includes a Sprayway Microlight gilet from C. 2001 thats still going strong. Always hated riding (or running) in full jackets unless properly raining, and this had kept wind, showers and spray off my core for years. Not superlight by modern standards, probably why it’s still going. Also still running the same gen3 goretex paclite jacket again from 2002ish. Got it free from a testing weekend run by Magicalia websites, it’s mostly worn but can’t bare to bin it. Also, Time pedals! Loved the Atacs with the snap on cover when I was young, I’ve run Shimano, Crank, nukeproof etc over the years, but always end up back on Time. Sram, don’t you dare ruin them!

Some of Tools I like: Abbey tools casette wrench, make sit fast and easy. Pedro's pedal wrench, long enough for good leverage, big diameter grip, fits my hand perfectly. For hydraulic brakes Hayes Feel'R tool os great. Prs3.2-2 repair stand, stable and easy to use handle. KNIPEX 78 03 125 flush cutting pliers for zipties. I might forgot to mention some.

I have the same old park multi tool. It still is my favourite bike tool

The park tool Allen key multi tool is great, we have about 6 in the bike shop and first thing you do in the morning is pick one up because you literally are using it all day and it is so practical and then obviously we have a set of bigger allenkeys with ball ends for bigger jobs

As a mechanic it's a weird thing growing with an experienced tool lol

Favorite bag was a Mountain Co-op Camelback knockoff I bought in the 1990’s. Held a bladder and pump in the large pocket and had a small zip up pocket for keys … perfect size, but I gave it to my son! And he continues to use it. Sure would love if he gave it back.

I totally get the bag thang. I have a few. 3 just for my camera gear depending on how much gear I want to take. lucky I shoot Fuji too, XT3, so it still pretty compact. Living in Australia, really need a MTB backpack that can fit plenty of water during summer. As we get quiet humid, I find Osprey Raptor great as keeping airflow on my back and coolish compared to other bags that sit on your back.

I am also picky about bags. I also love my camelback repack, but I also enjoy the bladder. I get crazy about shoes also and now pretty much only ride in the Ride Concepts wildcats.

I felt you so painfully when talking about internal routing nightmare-rage in the workshop. I had to put my dear down for a day before finishing work, bc i was so angry i couldn't do good work

Used to run a medium sized camelbak backpack, mainly to take a larger bladder with me. Now I’ve got a camelbak hip bag which takes a bottle, bare minimum tools and even a light waterproof. Far more comfortable but do have to do have to run a fidlock bottle, pump and stuff on the bike which im not overly keen on... but better than a big pack

Love that you still have the old Curtis frame with your name stamped in the gussets. Do you still have the forks that you did the home made pink camo paint job on?

Excellent video! Saw the bit about the ME7 and had a look on the shopping sites. As you said ... around 160-200€. But you know like they sometimes do this "trick" where they put one size for a really low price and its usually like a 35.5 or something ridiculous. Well guess what - they did that again and now I have a new pair of ME7s in size 47 in frame-color for .... 45€ wooohoo - now the kids want some too ...

I like the video. I also like that you have a lot of years/experience with mountain biking. I’ve been mountain biking for only 3 yrs now and I wanted to know how do you set up your biking shoes? Is there a rule for setting up your shoes for getting the most out of them? Thank you Will

For day bags I use a 20l Alpkit Gourdon. Bog basic, 100% waterproof, super tough. Had mine for over 10 years

Great video.Brilliant recommendations. One point though, have the same Topeak pump and could not get a 26” tyre to seat using it, Had to take the walk of shame to the bike shop to get it seated. They did it first time. What was I doing wrong?

I use a 15 year old Camelbak Mule with 3 liter bladder. Use it for camping, hiking and mtb. Just changed out the bladder and no tears at all. Hope you guys make it to the Sea Otter Classic in October. Would love to meet you and the crew!

Had a Camelback HAWG for probably 20 years and still going strong, even my go to motorbike bag too, although the bladder went black a long time ago haha. Loving the topeak charger pump, I'm about to go toobless and might invest if i have trouble at least. The Acre packs are fantastic, never heard of them until now but i couldn't bring myself to buy a 270 quid rucksack. Great content, ive only just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. My Fav Bike Bag are an Ortlieb Packman Pro 2 inc a internal hydropack and drink hose to the front. Before this bag i used for years a Ortlieb Messenger Bag. Love Ortlieb for the watterproof, was waterproof enough to swim across a lake to an island. Not sure if they are availble outsite Germany , but the best bags i ever used.

Always a good idea to take a bit of cash when visiting a friend's bike cave.

I can understand the camera bag, I searched for years to find a camera bag to have on the bike. I tried several but I ended up with the Thule Enroute camera backpack 20L. It is just the right size for my mirrorless camera, a couple lenses, my Sony Actioncam and a few accessories.

Love the ME7, had them when they came out first, sole was open near the cleats after 3 month, Shimano gave me a new pair as warranty...Had this pair for a long time, but is open again at the same spot, used hot glue to fix it...And bags are really an issue :) right now looking for the best riding belt (no bladder) for me, using a Race face rip strip for a long time now, done some modification on it and thinking of making one my self that will fit my desire

I use a Badland Monster fanny pack with shoulder straps for warm weather deer hunting. I've always wanted to try it out biking so my back doesn't get wet

For seating tires I got a tire seater tool. This was bought after a lot of frustration trying to get my tires to seat correctly. Tried the soap trick, compressor, without success. Now I put the tire on and with the tool get the tire seated quickly.

I have that old Park Tool key set. Bought back in the early nineties.

I have that same Park Allen set. Lasted me over a decade riding and at work

I'm picky as well. Clothing, gloves and pads only Endura. Shoes only Northwave. Backpacks Camelbak 1 smaller still with a 3L bladder for the summer & a larger one for the winter so I store my jacket once I warm up.

after spending hundreds buying and returning different riding bags, i gave up and got an enduro strap & bottle cage instead! works perfect for me

Nice, yea I'm fussy on backpacks for sure, they have to fit perfectly and not move around. The evoc FR back protector is my fave, back sweet or not, secure, tough, lasting very well

Doddy, I love your videos to bits, in fact I love the whole GMBN crew and the great content you publish... You guys do an amazing job and I know how difficult it is to keep quality content flowing. I think you are one of the most articulate presenters out there, you can make it amazingly easy to listen to even a mundane task such as cleaning a bike for 10 minutes... :) I just wish you have not fallen prey to thumbnail clickbaits and made those funny faces. I know it's a proven fact that they attract more views, people are interested in extreme facial expressions and bla bla... but I just hope that GMBN audience is a bit more educated than that... I am sorry for the rant on here, but I have a strong personal dislike about this kind of thumbnail and I thought I should just put it out there that it's having the opposite effect on some of your loyal audience. Cheers!
