This is kinda sad to hear... freddiew and the crew back in 2010 was the MAIN AND WHOLE reason i started youtube and editing. The main reason how i got into movie making, editing, youtube, film school and a batchelor in film. Iv been having multiple channels doing VFX and skits since FreddieW golden days. That you guys dont have the same, or even more influence on youtube, is so sad... now mainstream media and vloggers like Jake paul and old Viners hs taken over the content on youtube. Only a week ago i re-visited the old coridor and freddiew videos, and it felt sooo good. Its my childhood. I want a job at Coridor really, that would be a dream

I feel you man. Freddiew was the main reason I found my passion in filmmaking and pursued it as a career. The way Freddiew edited his videos also inspired me to be like him and maybe be better than him. Because of him, I'm now working in the media industry. Its sad that all these KZread feature and short films are being taken over by vloggers who usually put no effort in their videos.

Don't be sad. They're angry that traditional media doesn't allow for them, but fail to acknowledge that traditional media is on its way out. What's happening to television now will happen to movies in 15 years, and EVERYONE will be doing what FreddieW did, it'll be like a switch that's flipped. What's being yearned for here is establishment and structure, and to be a part of the status-quo instead of a trendsetter, which is sensible and I understand it. The current shift we're seeing - towards establishment and vlogging over the parts of youtube that were originally great - is the last dying breath of that status quo attempting to adapt to the trend that FW and CD established, and the thing is, it's not working. The views these companies bring in on youtube in no way make up for the views they lost from cord-cutters; what's more, if the trend continues, it's simply fertile ground for the NEXT youtube to come and take the old one's place.

Same, Freddie and what he created inspired me to look into film and eventually CG, which I still am aspiring to master. The world is bigger than Hollywood. And in these last years the best films were either indies or productions from outside the U.S. So forget about Hollywood. Go out in the world. Especially Freddy with his skills will have a bigger and better chance to make the movies he wants.

  • @forkayebee3831

    @forkayebee3831

    4 жыл бұрын

@@chrichtonsworld1 Not really, it's a completely different ball game. As he points out the amount of people and skill you need to make a movie doesn't just exist everywhere. It's like finding out someone is an engineer, they are never just an engineer but an engineer in something. This is the same with film making, just because you can make good youtube content doesn't mean you can make good film, and vice versa. They are two entirely different skill sets and there is a reason why so many indie movies fail or don't get funded. Hollywood also has better unions in place for film making, that is sorta important for this industry as well and the successful indies you do see, are from insanely talented and very lucky people. One other thing, directing yourself or a few friends in youtube is completely different from an entire set worth of people needed in film making, there is a reason there are so many people in movie ending credits and every last one of them is needed for film making. It's a beast and really to have the infrastructure to feed that beast, not many places can do it and many of the skills needed you never get from youtube. Again, I may be an aerospace engineer but I know fuck all about structural engineering. The world and jobs and what not are complex entities adn very rarely do specialty skill sets translate. Hence why all actors who want to direct usually cant and all directors who want to act suck. The ones we remember and think of are the one out of a million who succeed.

This statement becomes more truthful with every year that passes. KZread has been rewarding creators more and more for posting every day for years now, and posting every single day just isn't doable for channels that are trying to break boundaries and impress people with every single video. A couple of months ago creators needed to have 4000 hours of watch time to monetize their channels, now it's 4000 in the last 30 days. That's an insane amount of hours for a smaller channel, if you're not posting pretty much every single day good luck getting that.

I was going to say that while I love Corridor and FreddieW's videos, I always felt that there was a lower expectation of quality on youtube because it's free and easily accessible content, and a lot of successful youtubers find an audience because the content is right there at your fingertips and free to watch. Then again, most of what Hollywood puts out these days isn't worth paying theatre ticket prices for in my opinion, so many he has a point.

For anyone that remembers this, Freddie was involved in plenty of commercials for video games, for Blizzard and Call of Duty. If I were in Freddie's shoes, I could go the route of making and directing short creative action videos for the gaming industry from commercials all the way up to storyline content, using his uncanny ability to bring gaming characters to IRL.

2:00 SO TRUE. I tried doing a small film back in college here in ND I was all excited for it and had a few friends who seemed interested in doing it with me. It wasn't gonna be very long like 15-30 minutes tops we had lots of ideas. I scheduled a lot of stuff put a lot of stuff together. Got a place to film it, even got a cameraman or two to help for free (which was very nice of them). Then tried to find just some extras in the background even if they were just sitting there studying or working on homework. Didn't really find anyone, then luckily like a week before found 2 that were gonna be nearby anyways and were okay with being filmed. Then my one friend kinda just backed out without telling me or he did tell me. The day of the shoot the other friend was no where to be found, called him up and he was told "im on my way" waited a bit was down to just me, and one of my friends. Wanted 4 people, needed like 3 at least. Luckily a guy I knew was around and was willing to be in it which was great. In the end the one cameraman (who was kinda new to it) forgot to take the protective clear plastic off the lens of the one camera and so half the footage was slightly blurry :( I had to do almost everything and if I could have I would have done everything but sometimes you need others to do stuff cause you can't do everything all at once and when relying on people it can make problems. At the end of the shoot the one friend finally showed up and it was like "well you missed it cause you were late" but he didn't seem to care. -_- Maybe if I had money to give to people to work for me it would have been slightly better but making movies in places other then California just doesn't work to well unless your okay with doing it all alone without extras or other actors etc. That's one of the major factors that has been deterring me from doing videos like I want cause im just me and I can only rely on myself but it's hard to film something that requires some actors and your just you and operating the camera and lighting etc. At least with the editing of that film I made I had all the control of where I wanted the music, where I wanted cuts etc.

I like to write and I have my notes and stuff. Imagination is my thing but my friends lack in that so bad that even when they name stuff it's terrible. Some just don't have the vision. That's why it has to be a 2 man team, a writer and the guy doing screenplay.

It makes me so sad to see Freddie jaded. Hang in there, dude! You're a pioneer! You took the longer, harder road. It'll pay off. Old Hollywood is crumbling. I worked in VFX in LA for five years. Real-time rendering is about to change everything. The biggest VFX studios will implode in the shift, and the vacuum will send production companies flailing for good content. I know people in the industry who respect you guys more than most of the people who "made it." The real pros will turn to guys like you when it's time to rebuild the industry from scratch. Stay strong!

You had a major series go from KZread to Netflix, but Hollywood doesnt want to work with you? Then dont work with Hollywood, work with Netflix. Work with Hulu. Work with HBO. People need to get away from this "it has to be on the big screen to matter" ideal.

  • @Argentfan

That's not how VFX works. High quality VFX takes astronomical amounts of time to put together. A cheap 10 second clip might take an hour to put together. A high end 10 second clip might take a week. Movies don't just give you more money because it is a better quality. They pay you to sit there and work on that same 10 seconds for far longer. He likely wants to go Hollywood because it allows him to do more. He gets bigger budgets, he gets better actors, he gets better crew, everything is bigger and better. KZread, Hulu, and web in general is bottom dollar. You have to make something great out of nothing. Sometimes that works out big time, but in most cases it just turns into some forgettable drivel. It is easier to make a masterpiece if you have the right tools.

Okay, I get what you mean now. You are talking about the amount of work being more concentrated with big movies instead of smaller projects. @@EmceeTimmyT I live and work in the movie/TV/commercial industry in Hollywood. All of the major creative operations of Netflix, HBO and Hulu are in Los Angeles, specifically Hollywood and Burbank. And the vast majority of shows on Netflix are made by separate production companies and sold to Netflix. Nearly all of those companies are in LA, with a few in New York. Even most of the British and Canadian shows have significant operations in Los Angeles. If you want to produce a movie or TV show and get a good crew and good actors you need to work in either LA or New York, with Chicago being a distant third. Freddie's bigger problem is that he doesn't really have anything worth buying. He can make fun VFX skits, but his work on longer form, story-based entertainment is not good. The acting, writing and general plot of stuff like VGHS is terrible. No producer would look at that and think he would make a good director. His low budget VFX skills aren't really worth anything if he wants to be a director, as the VFX are going to be done by an actual VFX/compositing house.

That's how careers in show business work, not everyone gets to have a twenty year career, 99.99% of people who try never have a career half of Freddie's. I get that he needs to keep moving and trying, of course he's a human trying to make his way. I even get fans willing him on. But it's not a crime he never broke through, it's not evidence that the world is aligned against talent. It's a reminder that making stuff people like is super difficult and involves and element of luck, and that we should be happy that this man captured that for any instance in our lives.

As a long time fan, what I would say is I've always wanted you guys to make a 'low budget' movie, maybe a horror or something similar, of lets say 88-94 minutes. I think you could do this on a low budget and do something special. The big change I always feel is that movies tend to have a certain visual 'look' that sometimes seems distinct from youtube stuff. I don't know if they're filming on a different camera or what, but sometimes the visual quality of even a low budget horror is quite good compared to yt. That and you need a great story!!! Best of luck guys

Never got into a film festival but I am glad my portfolio includes short films that have gotten broadcast distribution and SVOD sales. In the past online views have been good however I got my first break in Television in the UK because one of my films turned a small profit in it's theatrical release. It wasn't even a cinema but the set of the horror short with a cheap projector showing on a bedsheet, ultimately films like that are the reason anyone gave me anything to make a film in the first place. After a festival run, release it on KZread. You can still put up BTS stuff on your channel to keep people engaged with your channel while working on these projects to garner acclaim in the industry, but you don't. They keep pumping obsene amounts in TV Ads, then they don't work, and when web ads, youtube ads, inlfuencers on other other platforms are so much more efficient, and you can track their effectiveness so much better. But don't get internet, they are set in their ways. They are the past, but for now, they control the money strings. And that's like that in every industry. Until millennials get promoted into positions of power, that's not gonna change.

yep exactly, that's safe and comfortable for them, even though the market share has to be dropping like crazy. I haven't watched a TV in years. But even the creators, just like these guys, they have this dream of getting there. my friend is a writer, and she wants to be "published." Bands still want want recording deals. THAT'S ALL OLD MEDIA. that's the old system and it's designed to screw the artists

They'll be forced to change when there is literally no TV anymore and it's all web. I work in the web commercial/content space and more money is going that way but agencies and clients don't see it as "TV" budget.

@@fobusas It differs from project to project, and it's slowly changing with some web content getting huge budgets. However, generally there's still a misconception that if lots of money is being spent it should be on TV. I've seen terrible web commercials from very well known companies simply because they want to ride the content river (quantity) on instagram for cheap.

My experience as a filmmaker, even if from a different country (Italy): I started with a self-produced short, which went around festivals winning many prizes and that took me to make a movie released by 20th Century Fox (Tempo di Reazione). Only later I opened a KZread channel to be able to work on personal projects with freedom. Our "Innumerevoli Ombre" web-series has won prizes around the world (New York, Los Angeles, Rome) and that has allowed us to do something else. Freddie (and Sam and Niko) need to do the opposite journey: now that they have this experience and strength deriving from their series on the web, they need to do a short self-produced to take around at festivals and with which to look for a contract for a film.

Honestly new media is and always will be seen as a different arm of the industry. As I finish up my last year of film school I’m reminded how throughout my experience we’ve always been told that new media stuff like youtube is it’s own thing and if you want to go that route then go do so, but know that you won’t be involved in anything traditional unless you go the traditional route

Here’s the thing: there’s more traditional content now than ever before with Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, HBO Max, Peacock, Qubi, etc. If these guys want the freedom to be funded for their own projects, they need to pay their dues in traditional media. Direct a show for the Disney channel, then Freeform, then CBS, then Netflix. Keep striving for bigger budgets. Once you direct one tentpole series ($8m+ episodic budget) you will be able to direct more. Then you can pitch yourself as the director of Stranger Things rather than Videogame High School and you can get financing for your solo film. You aren’t going to be able to jump the line with KZread credits but you can get your foot in the door and then pay your dues for a few years. If you want it, you can get it.

I find it funny most big budget films and shows today have worse muzzle flash effects that KZread videos from 2009. Most VFX artists still don’t know how to properly do it. It’s still better to go with blanks and squibs on a project like that in my opinion.

A good example of how to have it both ways is Dan Trachtenberg. He consistently produced online video, Totally Rad Show, short films, etc. While also doing the standard route of directing TV commercials and music videos, etc. He's now directing films in massive franchises (10 Cloverfield Lane, Uncharted) and doing it well. So the problem is, if you ONLY do KZread, you'll never get the contacts and experience wanted to shoot more traditional formats.
