8 Layer Substrate

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Getting closer! This is what I did for substrate specifically. You absolutely do not have to do it this way. In fact I do this differently for every tank. This plenum / deep substrate combo is my best guess for a good all around foundation for plants and bacteria. But it's a guess. Time will tell on how it does.

    As an old person, it’s amazing to see UG filters still in existence. Damn if one could still buy undertow plates ... well ppl would be happy. I’m not trying to start a UG war ! The cat litter is just insane .... too advanced for me. I would advise ppl to use screen over their plenum.

    Considering you're layering so many forms of media - Reading/research suggestion: "Cation exchange capacity" Your substrate has 3 main areas of consideration: 1. the physical properties which are grades and grain size (gravel, sand, silt, clay...), and the porosity (which varies between liquid and gas); the physics. This area explains why powersand and clay matter structurally. 2. the chemical properties (hence the reading suggestion); the hard chemistry. This area explains why the clay and florite make huge impacts to growth by temporarily binding nutrients. 3. the organic (living and dead); the biology of soil. This area will explain why your bacteria and dead organic matter influence the tank in nearly all aspects as life alters it's environment. If you're diving into substrate topics, those are the three different areas researchers generally divide their efforts into. And each directly influences and interacts with the others, so dividing it make it easier to understand. It's also cool to see someone playing with a plenum, the calcined kaolinite will very likely host the facultative anaerobes you're hoping to culture. I'm really looking forward to future videos on how that works for you.

    Everyone has something they swear by, mine is Florite. I stumbled upon it when I first got serious about planted tanks and have never looked back. I've planted in straight Florite and layered Florite. They are both a baked clay product however; the red most resembles your red clay powder for iron content. You've got me eyeballing my abandoned plenum project again😉👍

    Fluorite is going to be my next substrate to try.. I've used Fluval stratum capped with black imaginarium sand. I just set up a 29 gallon with a very small dirted base.. about half an inch.. the base layer consisted of gravel, sand, some pre-existing substrate from a 5 gallon aquarium and some soil dug up in the yard... So far so good I capped with three and a half inches of Black Diamond Sandblasting Sand..the aquarium's been set up for about three weeks now and it's doing really well...but I've heard so much good stuff about fluorite...I appreciated you guys sharing this 🙏🔥♥️💪💯

    Great video! I recently converted my 29gal to a deep substrate using an undergravel filter. I used oil-dri with flourite substrate layered in the middle and capped with a coarse sand. Curiously, after filling my tank with tap water(high kh,gh,8.0ph) and plants, my kh went to zero along with a dramatic drop in gh and ph to 7.0(within a day). Did you happen to notice a similar effect?

    Well after I set up this tank things kind of went nuts at home (unrelated to the tank) and I haven’t tested it as yet.

  • @coltscustoms

    @coltscustoms

    That's interesting. Did you pre wash the oil-dri? Or have you done a water change yet? I wonder if it's like the clay initially absorbing the water/ions. I just got my tank setup with a plenum and safe-t-sorb capped with sand too but didn't fill it with water yet cause I had to leave. I also have very hard well water, so I'll test too.

  • @jaredl2239

    @jaredl2239

    I did pre rinse all the substrate, but I also wondered if the cec value of the oil-dri was doing it's job pulling the positively charged ions out of the water. Just didn't expect that dramatic of a result. I plan to do a water change soon since it's been a week and the water cloudiness hasn't gone down as fast as I'd like. Thanks for the replies guys!

  • @coltscustoms

    @coltscustoms

    @@jaredl2239 Well I did a lil experiment with only 1/2 cup of pre rinsed safe-t-sorb in 4 cups of water. (About the same ratio that's in my tank) My well water, aerated for half hour, GH-17dh, KH-14dh, PH-8.4. And now with the safe-t-sorb, still aerated, after 24hrs, GH-23dh, KH-0dh, PH-6.6-7 (hard to tell). Now I just changed the water and we'll see what happens after another 24hrs.

  • @coltscustoms

    @coltscustoms

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@jaredl2239 On the flip side I have a 5 gallon guppy tank just for growing out some plants. Bare bottom with just 2 small cups of safe-t-sorb with the plants in them, which have been in the tank for a few months, and it's been about 2 weeks since I did a water change. GH, KH, PH are still very close to my well water. So I guess eventually it comes to an equilibrium or something.
