I truly love the foam idea j.h .i the deeper substrate and adding red clay powder is a win win in my book for heavy root feeder and running plants will carpet better n always have better luck when i also add sand with eco complete.keep it brother u doing a incredible job .

I learned that capping medium substrates with finer substrates, eventually the fine substrate drops to the bottom and the bigger comes out on top.

My substrate system is: 1. crushed lava stone in the back to build height, 2 .5 inch of organic potting soil 3. I take a pack of seachem root tabs, crush them into powder and sprinkle that down,. 4. I take my fluval stratum, put it in a bucket, put flourish advanced in a spray bottle, spray down the stratum until damp, let it dry then add that. 5. Plain stratum on top as cap. Very effective

I'm really looking forward to redoing one of my tanks. I think Lucas and Father Fish have really swayed me toward deep substrate. That is going to truly be nutrient rich! What sand is that because I have about 50lbs of that Mexican blue/gray river rock and I love the contrast!

@@richardwebb9532 thank you, I bought some and thank goodness have not used them yet. I have been stingy with substrate, filling in with foam and lava bags, and I doubt that putting them under THAT is a great idea, the roots will never reach. I have to rethink some thoughts.
