I blessed to live in an area that is good for planting most things. We've started getting our garden going and saving seeds as we go. We're even starting to can a little. I live in a small town so I'm not overly worried about "city chaos" that much, but I know that no one is safe if something big does happen. Thankfully I have a smart and level headed husband in my arsenal. lol

Another tip I picked up for winter months is buy yourself enough free standing tents for all family members living at home. A setup tent with sleeping bags and/or blankets in your home will give you an added layer of insulation from the cold within your home.

Get a barbecue grill and charcoal. Store the charcoal well, it's subject to absorbing moisture. Never burn a charcoal grill indoors! During Hurricane Sandy, here in Long Island, we were out of power for a week. Basement freezer was full of meat. The Wife fired up the grill once everything started thawing out, food was brought to family members and neighbors so it wouldn't go to waste.

Hurricane Sandy was when I got my first generator. I'd always wanted one, and fortunately had a small windfall (no pun intended) two days before that came up the coast. I'm upstate by five hours from you, but having that generator was real peace of mind! Now we have two, that original Generac 7500, and a dual-fuel one that was on sale a couple months ago. I, too, have some charcoal, ten 20-pound propane tanks, wood, Mr. Buddies, K-1 for the kero heater. Warmth and warm food are priceless!

​@@debbiecurtis4146that was interesting reading your remark - I live in the deep South in a rural area - . .hurricanes can knock power out for several months at times or a yr - My 8 kw home stand by might only last about 12 to.13 days on the 600 gallon bulk tank of propane I have lol - The problem is they won't deliver propane as long as it's a disaster area - that can be two or more months lol - The heat index after a hurricane is often 120° F lol - In my case I rarely use my home stand by generator - I worked in the offshore oilfields for yrs on generators and such - every thing offshore is off grid - so we master generators - So I fully understand fuel to power rates - so I can easily cause it to were I can cause 600 gallons of propane to last well over a yr or more - If you were to look on the net at farm light plants of the 30s - most rural homes had hybrid power systems - in the country those who had power generated and stored there own power in battery's - the battery's were good for 40 yrs or longer - There is little about them on you tube - but you can Google them - 2/3 of the world has grid powered 1/3 of the world has systems similar to the old farm light plants in this country up till around the 60s or 70s - in some areas of the country farm lighting plants are still in use - they might be 100 miles or further from the nearest town so there off grid & still use a farm light plant of the 20s - They charged banks of battery's once every Friday and ran the house on a bank of battery's through the week till the next Friday when they would charge the battery s - By being a hybrid system they burnt from 1/6th to 1/20th the fuel of a stand alone generator running 24/7 - today same thing can be accomplished with lithium battery s - The old farm light systems were 32 volts DC - in rural towns 32 volt appliances were sold to farmers - that's water pumps, refrigerators, freezers, fans, lights, inverters from 32 volts DC to 110/220 AC, radios, vacuume cleaners ect - I remember seeing those 32 volt appliances is stores up till the mid 60s - Even some had cabinet type 32 volt Air-conditioning units they only put out 3000 BTUs but they dried the air out.well - Air-condition burns a lot of fuel - so most used ceiling and window fans - the heat is not bad at all when you have a good ceiling fan - because of the high humidity down here solar panels only generate 20% of there out put at noon on a clear cloudless day and that is rare - so no one uses them down here -

Here's a cute hack for all of you, Last week our dining room window got broken by a baseball. there were chars of glass on the floor and a round hole in the window. I use Cling Wrap on both sides of the window glass to patch the hole. I now keep a few extra rolls of Cling Wrap with my prep gear. Remember, utilize what you have and improvise what you don't. The main thing is don't panic, stay calm and keep watching this channel as everything has multiple uses, you just need to find them.

I cut up a 2 Liter clear bottle. Cut off top and bottom and now had a good thick piece of plastic. Taped it on using heavy duty clear 3m packing tape. Has lasted for literally years.

TIP: If there are storms forecasted, I have a battery operated little radio and two hand crank ones to listen to storm advisories, I get what I'll need out of the refrigerator and put it in a cooler. Or two. Then I shut that refrigerator door and don't need to open it again. I keep solar walkway lights and lanterns and light strings in my greenhouse and I bring them in at dusk. Have a place, like over the kitchen sink, to hang up your solar lights. I have a solar string of lights down each side of the barn aisle so I can see to do chores. Also, I have the little white (I call them my 'twinklie' lights') already strung up. VERY low wattage and just enough light to see by if I plug them into my battery packs. Actually, I use the twinklie lights every evening for settling down for the night, it's like twilight in my house and soothing atmosphere! I often by board games, card games, crafts at Christmas and have a storage bin of things to do. I used to knit, but arthritis took that away. Teach kids to knit scarves, leg warmers, hats, make potholders. The Spirograph is always fun, too. If you have a greenhouse, don't forget that you could make a nice space out there with a table and chairs for folks to be warm on a sunny day and read, do crafts, etc. I have a couple pieces of plywood for a flat floor for chairs. Even if it is 5-degrees outside, if the sun is out, it's 70 or more in the greenhouse. Cozy! Edited to add: Sign up for the JoAnn's flyers and get 40-percent off an item...like crafts, shoe goo, scissors, polar fleece yardage, waterproof tablecloth material is handy, think outside the box in the JoAnns store. And don't forget the tables full of really discounted material.

No one every mentions solar lights that are in your landscaping. My power went out last week for a few hours and I went outside and pulled up one of the landscaping lights and it worked for several house. Very bright. Then charge it up again the next day. They are cheap too.

They generally don't have a long life!

We are on day seven without power due to a bad storm. We are doing well, so many weren't prepared or can't deal with it. We have had added a few things to our wish list.

A few things to add are a tent(s) to sleep in your living room because most heating systems (and A/C) are dependent on electricity! Lighters/matches, candles (for light and heat), roof shingles (especially in high wind areas), batteries, fuel for cooking/heating (propane, butane, kerosene, etc.), AM/FM radio (battery, solar and crank), and especially potable water storage; at least one gallon per person per day because without electricity the water pressure will quickly drop and stop in most places!

I have many LED flashlights and battery operated radios with WX and shortwave bands. I've had several outages where my living room was very well lit. I have a manual can opener, many dozens of canned goods, and most importantly a landline. The Boy Scouts trained me well. BE PREPARED. Great video! Almost forgot-get enough rechargeable batteries for two sets for all devices. A lot of money, but there won't be electricity to recharge them during an outage. Also, a local AM radio station can be essential in providing emergency information such as shelter, water, food and other important information. Be ready!!

Yea, last night I got everything out. The storm was wicked. It is better to be prepared than stressing out over it at the last moment. I know having ptsd any little can stress me out. So being prepared is the best.

Good conversation. I have the ultimate off grid shelter, which is a small RV. It runs on a 12 volt deep cycle battery and I can cook over the propane stove and oven. The refrigerator will run on propane also. We have a water tank, propane water heater, and 12 volt pump. In cold weather I have a propane fired standalone heater. Obviously we are only as good as our energy supply but for the short term, a couple of weeks, we can be self sufficient. I got a 10Kw generator if I need to get some water from the well or need big power for tools or whatever. The most important item is the percolator to get that morning cup of coffee. 😁

I put glow stick over the lip of door frames and it reflects off the white ceilings and illuminates the area well enough to walk in the dark. All in all a great video. I like a dynamo radio/flashlight combo. I brought a small rechargeable tv also. You’d be surprised how mush I appreciate that 7inch screen when everything else is off.

Just yesterday Saturday June 17th +UK nightowl or lone wolf here+ I was grocery shopping and most of the stores were only taking cash payments because of service issues for the card readers, little old lady was upset about it saying "i have the money in my account" I pointed to the cash machine opposite the checkout and said "I'll hold ya goods for you Mable" as she walked over to the machine she remembered me and caught me paying with cash 😂 some folks were getting restless so I said "I hope you all have cash to pay, the card readers are offline again" always have cash and an adjustable attitude 🤔

When Dollar Store didn't have coins to make change, I've asked cashier to put in that I gave exact change and keep the extra few cents. It helped having enough singles so i was only out a few cents.

Antique shops and flea markets are good places to pick up ye olde fashioned Cookerie supplies, such as hand crank mechanical beaters and pie or waffle irons. Also you can, if your lucky come across footpump powered sewing machines.

dont forget a manual grinder if you have whole bean coffee....that electric one will not work^^

Rechargeable motion sensor closet lights. I set them up in almost every room. They light up when you walk in. They are small and bright.

@@oli7120 Any brand is fine. The design is basically the same. I have 10 of them, all in different shapes and sizes. I usually buy them on line when on sale. I set my budget at about $6 each. It is cheaper to buy in a set of 4.

last week I heard on a local radio station that there could be grid impacts this summer if we have heat waves. we are expecting yo have below normal rain this summer. I have a variety of small stoves I can use to make coffee or boil a little water for a quick dehydrated or freeze dried meal.. there are things I would love to have on hand but hard in a small apartment

Vaseline is good for cuts helps stop bleeding and seals wounds dermatologist suggest it instead something like Neosporin because some are allergic to the antibiotic ointments

You can pack a wound with red pepper and it will stop bleeding - just bandage it - the red pepper will become the scab - don't remove it - there will be no infection or inflammation under the bandage - also there will be little to no scaring once the red pepper falls off - Even deep gashes will heal 10 times faster with just about no scaring - I grew up in swamp country - my Grate Grate grandfather was a pharmacist - That method had been used for a long long time - The red pepper has a very slight burning sensation - but not enough to matter - Another is handed down by the Jews - its been studied in France - The French found that when a heavy coffee drinker brakes a bone it will not heal for multible months if it does heal - they found coffee absorbs magnesium - If they add Epson salt to each cup of coffee they drink the bone would completely heal 100% in one to two weeks - When a horse brakes a leg if they harness it and raise it then give them doses of magnesium sulphate ( Epson salt) through the week the broken bone will heal 100% in a week or so - according to french study's My last brake was my right arm I drank about a teaspoon in water 6 times through each day for two weeks - the bone healed 100% in two weeks - The doctor said I could go back to splitting fire wood with an axe - From what I've seen it does work every time - 50% of heart attacks are due to magnesium defficensy's

Luckily for us in Vegas that it never last super long. I'm a huge coffee lover so those tips I loved! 🥰☕️

I have a stack of glow sticks I keep them in my first aid kit in the house keep some under the sink I keep some in my bag I put in my semi everyday. And for Halloween I'll use them to help Mark the corners of decorations put them on the tie down strings of the blow up decorations and use them to mark the steps so that people don't get hurt when they come trick or treating to the house. That helps keep them in rotation because those do have expiration dates

If you put activated ones in the freezer, they will last several days. Freezing slows the reaction. Not likely useful in a power outage but great for extending play time for your kids.

I use them trick or treating so cars can see us.

A very good way to entertain kids and sometimes adults is to have a traditional black chalkboard stone tablet and lots and lots of chalk, white and multi-colored with chalk erasers. Many kids get into it when they draw pictures again and again. Also chalk stone boards are great for messages on the wall and saves on paper and ink. A great tip is to get a self-standing pop-up tent for your living room or large room in your home and whenever the electric goes out you and your family can take your sleeping bags or blankets, pillows, maybe a stuffed animal for the kids, a flashlight and snuggle in together like puppies and share body heat during the night and sometimes during the daytime. Or you take some furniture and huge queen or king size blankets or quilts and make a makeshift tent and put in your blankets, pillows and stuff. Another overlooked thing is childcare, especially for people with young children and babies, if you're part of a group, take turns watching each others kids in an emergency while they do work or for example, someone needs to be with a family member, in the hospital and they can't take the kids with them. Years ago, a neighbor broke both his legs during a blizzard that lasted days, concussion and serious cuts and only his wife was allowed to go because the hospital was packed like sardines everywhere. My family volunteered to take care of their two kids and a baby. Luckily we babysat for the kids before and they knew us. We don't drink coffee, we're tea drinkers, but we get instant and ground coffee and have it in our barter supplies. As they age out, I donate them to local support groups and buy fresh replacements. We have beer, wine and liqueurs along with cigarettes and a few cigars in our barter supplies. The liqueurs can be used in medical situations like a disinfectant or you need someone to drink themselves unconscious to take out a bullet. This happened to one of my uncles when he was young, he and a couple of his friends were hunting and was in a hunting accident, got trapped in a blizzard and they had to take a bullet out and clean the wound. Depending on the disaster type, you can use pennies for emergency welding for tiny or a small hole until you can get it replaced. My dad did this with a house water pipe until the blizzard was over and he could replace the pipe.

If you have children, include hand crank flashlights for the kids. Kids like flashlights and playing with them; hand cranking lets the kids work off same energy and saves your batteries.

If you live in the country, power outages are common. No big deal. So the power goes out for a month, I can entertain myself with my banjo.

When buying a pump, always check the head height, You want one that has atleast 10ft head height if your going to pump a basement, as pumps push the water higher the gallons per hour go down. I also believe if you run out of coleman fuel, Isorpyl alcohol will work.

I have all that stuff somewhere 😅

Best would be a wood stove. Can you demonstrate examples. Seems like the BEST fuel in a SHTF scenario would be branches... how to store etc.

Reading (real books and magazines) and writing (paper) materials.

Glow sticks use can be prolonged or used another time or two by putting them in the freezer. I imagine the same would be for putting them in ice.

Good list boss! I guess because my kids aren't on their phones a lot, if a power outage, I want tv. I also don't have huge TVs so they don't use much power. I have a 32 inch around here that uses 15 watts on certain settings.....you can cover that with overcast power easy....we watching TV. Lol

Something close to home hit me today. You know most of our?stuff comes from China today and if that ever stops were toast. I was looking for a simple bag of rubber bands today at a $ store and they didn't have any. It accurred to me just how many simple items in America we take for granted..wow what a wake up call.

Battery-powered LED flashlights and area lights have overtaken glow sticks and candles Etc in terms of Effectiveness and economy. Alkaline batteries have a shelf life of 10 years. I buy 60 packs they last me five or six years normally in a pinch they'd last a month

My store was limited to 4 rolls of quarters a day at one point

It works well - another good one is 3M weather strip - it's sold in auto parts stores to glue car door gaskets on - I often use it to reglue the soles of my boots - the tubes are large - I get the half gallon canning jars at Walmart and put all my glues in them and put them in the fridge so the glue doesn't dry out -

The glow sticks only seem to last a couple of years in storage. So rotate them out frequently. My little ones are grown and gone, so I've switched over to the solar driveway lights. I havent had them long but my plan is to put them out for charging every six months or so.

To get a cheap solar generator is by DIY. Purchase a cheap power inverter(transformerless type), by affordable batteries (upgrade little by little), solar panels (upgrade). Or learn how to build your DIY systems
