8 Interior Design Tips for Lazy People! | Easy, Low Maintenance Design Hacks for NORMAL People

I probably shouldn't admit this, but designing a home is hard work. You have to select colors, furniture, decor, patterns, textures and on top of ALL of that, you also need to find a design style and maintain that space.
Well, in today's video, I'm sharing some interior design tips for lazy people. That's right, I'm showing you how to create a perfectly designed home with minimal effort. With these tips, you should be able to design your home once and never EVER think about it again if you don't want to. Does the idea of that hurt me a little bit? Definitely! But I also understand that 99.9% of people don't love moving furniture around all day like I do, haha!
Which of these tips will you be using for your own space? Let's chat about it down in the comments.

Me too! I love mid-century modern, but I also love contemporary and transitional. I have a home to furnish later this year and I've been all over the place with Pinterest and trying to narrow down an idea. This was really helpful. I think I'm just going to pick a favorite room that makes me say "yes" every time I see it, and go with that style throughout the house.

@@SBEKidsChannel - I know, right? Every style is wonderful, but I had to find what speaks to my soul. I recently realized that I absolutely feel fulfilled by Modern Cottage? I don’t know if that’s a thing, but I love Cottage but not to the point of flowered print fabric, lace, etc. I really do not like too much feminine, however, I am loving the white that reads blush pink on walls. It’s fabulous! Sadly not for my space, but I’d use if if I could! So, I’m guessing that it’s Something/Cottage. I just love that for me!

    1) Choose a low maintenance design style (e.g., minimal design style like Scandinavian or Contemporary) 2) Opt for a strict color palette 3) Buy art sets (and spread out art sets) 4) Add furniture pads to everything (to make it easier to move things around) 5) Plan out your space 6) Opt for higher profile furniture (because it's easier to clean under) 7) Buy all decorative accents/lighting at the same store 8) It's ok to replicate (and expand upon) things you see online

Excellent tip about sticking to one store for all the lighting. I hadn't been able to pin down quite what it was that I was really not liking about the look of my place, but I've now realized that my mishmash of different lamps and lighting fixtures is making my place look cluttered rather than "eclectic." I think there's a line between eclectic and "a hot mess" and I crossed it, lol!

2:56 That's the American version of Scandinavian design. Scandinavian design, in Scandinavia, is more bold, using colored furniture and a lot of original design items (meaning not copies) such as chairs or lamps, and it's still heavily inspired by mid century interior design. I wouldn't even call Ikea for Scandinavian interior design, I think they play a big part in the misunderstanding of what Scandinavian interior design actually looks like, because people think that since Ikea is from Sweden that's how Scandinavian design must look like. But in Scandinavia Ikea is more like Target, it's the place you go when you've just moved out and can't afford anything ells, you don't really go there to 'find inspiration'.

  • @grksher

One of my best friends is from Sweden and her home has very little color and she has many ikea style pieces even though her home is extremely high-end. I’ve also visited her family in Sweden and it was nearly the same - tons of white interiors, white furniture, and very simple lines with a huge ikea influence.

  • @birgittevelsvik6939

    @birgittevelsvik6939

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes! Thank you..! Scandinavian design has a long and rich history. It is multifaceted, it varies from country to country, and «just go to IKEA» is not enough. If you fill your house with IKEA, you will not achieve the scandinavian style - your house will just look like IKEA. Most scandinavians use IKEA to supplement their design style. I find it sad that people think IKEA is the epitome of scandinavian design brands, when we have names like Arne Jacobsen, Børge Mogensen, Verner Panton, Georg Jensen, Finn Juhl, Bruno Mathsson, Staffan Holm, LK Hjelle, Slettvoll, Andreas Engesvik, to name a few. And these are just designers, there are hundreds of well-known design brands and houses, but everyone on KZread are just talking about IKEA. It makes me think they haven’t done their research properly.

  • @SheraSMS

I don’t think people think Ikea encompasses the whole of Scandinavian design or is even the epitome…I mean maybe some do but most people that understand design know better. Kiva’s point was pretty much if you go there you will find a simple clean cohesive aesthetic. I don’t think it was that hard to understand. Also, acting like going to Ikea is unsophisticated or turning your nose up to it is pretty classist so let’s not do that. Design is for everyone and Ikea helps make that possible.

When we moved to our house 3 years ago we didn't measure out our bedroom, there are only 2 walls we could put the bed so it wasn't a big deal, we just put it on the wall that made more sense but when my hubby ripped up the carpet we talked about putting the bed on the other wall so I measured out everything and drew it in illustrator (I'm a graphic designer so it's easy for me) and I had everything drawn to scale and moved pieces around and we came up with a floor plan. We did the same thing with the nursery before putting anything in it. I also did this when I was single to make sure my furniture was going to fit in my tiny studio apartment. I'm a very visual person and I can imagine where things will go but I do overestimate how much space I have sometimes haha so measuring things out first makes it so much easier.

Great tips, Kiva! Thank you! Totally with you on the furniture pads thing (because I'm so non-committal, haha). Another tip for lazy designers (related to your measurement tip): it's nice to always have pictures of your house with you (e.g. on your phone) so you can get a better idea of whether or not something would work in your space. I generally will know that already when I look at something, but every so often when I'm uncertain, the photo will confirm for me that something might not work very well, which saves me the hassle of having to return it. (Laziness or efficiency? That is the question!) My most important tips, though, are related: Be okay with an unfinished space, and if something isn't quite right, it's okay to wait awhile until you find exactly what you're looking for. I have a distinct style that most people can understand when they visit but I don't know if there's a particular name for it. I use a lot of black, gold, and saturated midtones … maybe it's art deco? Nah, not quite, not enough pattern or texture. Anyway, I'm such a visual person so I love to browse and look at beautiful things, even if I have no intention of buying them. Sometimes I'll love a design even though it wouldn't work anywhere in my space. Anyway, nice talking with you!

Just found you and your video. Fantastic tips! Thank you so much for your awesome, very helpful insights and tips. I know nothing about interior design and am trying to decorate my first house. I'm not doing very well, to say the least! I truly have NO idea what I'm doing! Very frustrating. I will undoubtedly learn a lot from you. Thank you.

I LOVE you channel! Your style and taste in art couldn't be more different than mine, and yet I binge watch your videos because you give so many useful tips. I'm still in my first tech job saving to leave mama's house, trying my best to make the most out of my really cheap furniture and poorly built home, and you are being a part of it. The only shame is we don't have IKEA in brazil (tbh it would probably still be pricey here since our currency is worth only about 1/6th of a dollar)

Hi! I recently started to emulate designers I love. It's genius! It makes it so much easier to decorate and I am enjoying decorating again. Why I never thought of this before I have no idea. Thanks!!

I can´t believe that decorating means buying, buying, buying, buying, instead putting together the things you already have, learning what to get rid of, so that other things you love and already have get a chance to stand up and become a focal point. To do so you don't even need to leave your house. Another reasonable idea would be how to recognize if something you like is worth buying in terms of what you already have (or if it's going to ruin your composition) or what treasures you can find at your granny's basement and bring back to life to give some personal character and family history to your space. Or how to upcycle things (books, vases, cans, pillows) to make them work together, most people can improve their style with the stuff they have alreaby bought. Personality and is something that can't be bought from a store, that's why the EXPAND-on-it concept is the most valuable tip.

my house about 90 percent thrifted and or furniture from antique marts or deceased grandparents, nothing is bought new except a few light fixtures. I scraped off the popcorn ceilings myself, i had two local guys cover the sheet rock with beadboard, so my 1948 lake house is more true to its origin.

I used the last tip for my bathroom. I was sent a gorgeous black and brass light fixture in a brushing scheme. I knew I wanted to use it in my powder room but thought the room was too small to paint the walls black. While looking for videos about refreshing my countertops, I came across a bathroom redo with black wainscoting on the bottom half of white walls and a black wall behind the sink. It was the perfect solution for my powder room and it looks great!!

I took an interior design introductory course in high school, and have always had a pretty good eye and feel for a space I'm in. At the same time, I move things and have since I was a teen, because I get restless in my space, and it clears my head and opens up creativity. I like making subtle changes seasonally, and sometimes that includes moving furniture, changing out art, and even sprucing up with hardware changes every couple of years, etc.

The furniture pads are so essential! I have a really heavy wooden bed with a drawer underneath and put felt runners on all the corners. Otherwise I would never be able to move it to vacuum under it!
