Interior Design Trends that Will ALWAYS Be Popular *my CONTROVERSIAL opinions*

Are you tired of interior designers and influencers telling you to throw your stuff away? Do you often feel like the second you get your home styled, someone is telling you that your style is now outdated? Do you want a low maintenance home that is timeless? If you answered YES to any of these questions, today’s video was made for YOU.
In today’s video, we talk about 5 interior design features and elements that are TIMELESS. This video isn’t just about my opinion, it is based on research and interior design history. If you incorporate any of these into your home, the house will appeal to you, your family members, and future owners for years to come and let’s face it, when we are making structural or aesthetic changes to our home, we HAVE to think about resale. Now some of these home decor and furniture items are considered controversial in the online interior design community, but that’s okay! Our entire goal is to craft a home that is not only timeless, but more importantly, keeps your hard earned money in your pockets!
Do you have any of these items? Do you believe they are timeless or trendy? Let’s talk about why down in the comments!

Another décor item that I think is timeless is wood flooring in classic stains (oak, maple, walnut in dark brown up to light blonde stain). On the other hand, the tile that's meant to look like wood flooring, and grey wood flooring, were both trendy flooring, but not timeless.

Agree! I grew up with wall to wall carpet. The house I am in now, and it is the first time I have had hardwood floors. I love them. I do want to buy a few area rugs. When I think now about it. Carpet is so nasty and dirty. They are just dust and dirt catchers. And it collects stains easily that you can't just wipe up like hardwood floors. Especially sux when u have kids and pets.

I remember decades ago, when I was a waitress at a wonderful family owned high end restaurant in NY (working my way through college) and the owner and his wife were having a meeting with architects to build a new home. They wanted modern, but something that wouldn’t date itself. Inner me, upon overhearing this conversation (as I was tending to a nearby table) wanted to shout out, “Tell them they want classic architecture! NOT modern!” This was in the late 80s. I’m certain that they have since remodeled.

Truly words of wisdom! Just to undermine your words regarding white bedding: The white bedding I use is from my great-grandmother (we're talking early 1900reds!) and handmade, all the way. It's pure linen and I love the look and feel of it. It even still has lace inserts and to make it match the colour scheme, I simply buy pillow cases in the colour I want and put them underneath my linen ones so they shine through the lace. As said, it's all handmade bedlinen, from planting the flax to spinning and weaving and then sewing it and making the lace. It couldn't tell more of a story really. And yes, I maintain it so it'll last me, but that said, it was worse for wear when it was just lying around in the linen closet for decades seeing that my gran and mum thought it too boring. It took me hours upon hours to repair the lace, which with having been heavily starched before being put away had become brittle in places. I still wouldn't have it any other way.

And the outlet in the bathroom only works when the lights are on. I put candle sconces in the stairwell, upper hallway and bathroom and use the battery operated candles with built in timers. Yes, I have to reset them every couple months to ensure they are coming on at dusk, and change the batteries every couple months. But at night if I don’t want to turn on the overheads for a quick trip to the bathroom, etc. they provide a soft flickering glow and enough light to navigate by.

My home is full of color. I do not do white sheets. My favorites are florals, but they can be hard to find these days. I like to mix them with comforters and duvets in Turkish or otherwise bohemian patterns. Maybe because my grandma had floral sheets when I was growing up. She also sent *everything* out, including her sheets, to be laundered and pressed. I remember them coming back wrapped in blue paper tied with twine. She was old-school New York born in 1910. I picked up a lot about style and how to keep a home from her. She loved good stemware and flatware. She taught me how to properly make a bed and set a table. She had china that had been passed down to her. She had furniture with frieze upholstery . . . all those things left a profound impression on me.

I hate painting so when I do paint our houses I do bone White Walls with ultra white trim. It goes with every style and I dont have to paint when the trendy color is over with. Also stick with natural hardwood . Like cherry , oak , hickory ECT. That way it's one time and done.

I saw another interior designer say that "blonde" woods were a trend and that you should stick with mid-toned woods like some of the ones you mentioned. As a Scandinavian it is so interesting to me that the lighter woods are perceived as trendy in America, because over here in Scandinavia the "blonde" woods have been around for centuries in interior design, and I would consider cherry to be a temporary trend

A few years ago, I gave away every single colored bedding I owned (can you imagine I had red sheets at one point. Primary colour red. Ewww!) and bought white bedding. My life has been so much easier on that front. I don't worry about mixing and matching and white bedding is so easy to care for. I walk into my bedroom and I'm instantly happy looking at the bedding. I even changed all the house towels to white.

This is why I just did my backsplash in white subway tile. Everyone was like why don’t you do grey or this or that, and I know I’m not the type to waste money by redoing something later on just for looks so I went classic. I did get the long subway tile (3x12) to give it something different and more modern, but it’s so subtle that it still looks timeless.

I grew uo with Oriental/Persian rugs. When my Grandparents had to sell their business and home to the state to make way for an expressway we were given their three best rugs and they lived another life in our bedrooms. I didn't appreciate them that much then but would love to have them now. Embrace quality and what stands the test of time. I think I'm drawn to things in design as I am in fashion: Classic never goes out of style. That's why it's a classic!

Every (EVERY) YT designer who've said subway tiles are out, said something to the effect that, "they're still beautiful and I Iike them, but they're out, because they've been overdone". That's why I don't like "trends". Something is timeless and beautiful, but too many other people like it, so get rid of it?!? My house's decor style is 'me' and I never go out of style😋

I personally love it but was just wondering your take on rug sizing in a dining room. Thanks!

Sconces are *classic* . And there are some wonderful options out there, especially now that they’re popular again. My living room and bedrooms don’t have overhead lighting, only sconces, as do many homes built before most people had electricity and I prefer it that way. I supplement the light with table and floor lamps.
