8 Hacks To Prevent Foggy Goggles | Swimming Tips For Triathlon

Спорт

Fogging goggles is one of the most annoying things about swimming. You might have heard of using saliva, buying anti-fog solutions or rinsing with fresh water. There are so many theories out there, but which ones actually work?

When the temperature of the lens is cooler than the air between your eyes and goggles it attracts the moisture, which forms condensation, and this causes the fogging in the goggles.
We try out 8 different hacks to prevent foggy goggles occuring:
- Applying saliva to the lens
- Applying soap to the lense and then washing off
- Keeping your goggles dry
- Dipping your goggles in the pool
- Applying toothpaste to the lens and then washing off
- Treating with a naked flame
- Washing with fresh water
- Applying anti-fog solution
Which, if any of these, do you use to prevent your goggles fogging? Let us know in the comments below 👇

Any baby shampoo, rinse your googles, put a drop on each lens then allow to dry, polish off with a soft cloth of tissue. Works well and lasts quite a few swims, even in the sea.

Spitting. Works in the ocean while scuba diving and it works with swimming goggles too. It's free and I have it with me always endless supply. But it has to be done to dry goggles to be the most effective. Then rinse gently. And of course you do that in the showers while you are washing yourself before getting into the pool (important hygiene thing, which many/most people don't do). I wouldn't use soap or toothpaste. If there are residues from either one and it gets into the eyes, it will be a huge problem. Flame works only if your goggles have glass like scuba masks have. The soot creates a film on the glass. I wouldn't use this even with my dive mask.

I swim in the ocean all year round in water that varies from 12C to 20C. A small drop of mild shampoo on the lens before swimming, rubbed around gently with a finger tip, then rinsed out using moderate water pressure only (fresh water), completely stops my goggles fogging up. I swim for continuous periods of up to two hours. This method has never failed me.

The hack with the flame only works with scuba diving masks, because they are made of tempered glass and don't have any antifog layer when you buy them. The theory behind is, that the silicone from the body of the mask loses fat after a while which gets on the glass. With a flame you burn this fat (this takes a few minutes), then you have to remove the burnt black fat layer and no fogging will occur. (By the way, that is the best way of treating your scuba mask against fogging, but only if you know what you are doing!) The lenses of swimming goggles are not made of glass, they are made of plastic. So I wouldn't recommend using fire! For the same reason I also wouldn't recommend thooth paste. The tempered glass of scuba masks almost can't be scratched, but plastic can. Thooth paste has tiny cleaning particles in it, even if you don't see them, that might scratch your swimming goggles.

i love freediving and my way to go is toothpaste, then flame, and then shampoo, a little overkill, but i do it as a ritual before packing my gear. Doesn't take much of my time, i made that ritual a part of the experience, and it doesn't fog no matter how long the diving session last. But as you said, only for tempered glass masks.

Exactly right. As for tips: sadly swim goggles will never last as long as a scuba mask due to the fact that plastic is not very abrasion resistant either. Anti fog would work best. Many swim manufacturers are also working on solutions to make the anti fog layer reactivate itself.

I never have fogging after I learned this trick. 1 part "no tear" baby shampoo and 4 parts water. Mix and put in a spray bottle. Spray your googles before each swim and rinse quickly in the pool or sink before putting them on. Enough soap will remain and you will have clear googles for your whole swim. After swimming make sure to rinse googles with clean tap water to prevent a buildup of chlorine and other pool chemicals. No need to buy expensive "no fog" sprays. The soap disrupts the surface tension of water and formation of microscopic droplets that cause fogging.

None of the above works well or not at all because the reason goggles fog is that there is a temperature difference between inside and outside the lens. It's condensation. What you need to do is to make the temperature difference as close to zero. To do that, what you can do is to dip your face and your goggle under water long enough to cool them down to the same temperature. Then, put your goggle on your face. This way, you can keep the temp difference to the minimum and therefore keep the fogging to minimum. It all boils down to temp difference between the inside and the outside of goggle. You know, in winter, your house's windows get foggy because inside is warmer than outside. Your body gets heated up while you swim, so at some point the inside gets warmer than outside. But, if water is warm enough, you can get away with it for some time. It may not work where water temp is very low. I swim open water in Connecticut during summer where water temp is 60+. I think dipping my face and my goggle long enough get me going at least a mile or so. Again, the fogging is caused by temp difference between water temp (outside of your goggle) and the air trapped inside of your goggle which is constantly warmed up by your physical activities. Maybe cooling your face around your eyes with ice helps if you swim in very cold water.

True and main reason for fogging. BUT skin around the eyes will get warmer and warmer with the swimming exercise (if you work out harder). So the conditions change. Cooling off face beforehand only works for a short period of time then.

@@eternauta5902 Yes, that is theoretically true. But for some reason, it works for me at least 40 minutes, which is long enough for me. Also, I could just cool my face and goggle when needed.

I am an open water swimmer & have found that even with new googles (I've tried many makes) that the anti-fog in them lasts only a few swims. Thats even following manufacturers care instructions. Its probably due to the water being a lot colder than in a pool. I have found that after my swim I put a drop of soap/shampoo in them when I have a shower & they never fog up

  • @BOBODDYacronyms

    1) I noticed you guys are using the same pair of goggles for each test. If you did otherwise, it was not clearly stated or shown. You started the first test by saying "these are anti-fog goggles". In order for any of these tests to have an even close-to accurate rating, each pair of goggles that is tested NEEDS to be a different pair without anti-fog. 2) Each different pair of goggles needs to be tested once before the "hack" in order to ensure fogging and in order to see if the "hack" is actually doing anything, or if it would have done nothing anyway. This is the only way to insure that your independent variable is having ANY effect at all! 3) Before each dive, you need to make sure that the temperature of your face is either much higher or much lower than the water you are diving into. And the temperature of your face needs to be the same for each test before each dive in order to create the same fogging affect and obtain consistent results. Summary: The numbers are absent, the facts are incomplete (and almost entirely based on random opinions or myths) and the tests are inconsistent. Making this "hack/test" video a fail.

A backup method of avoiding fogging in goggles is to place a few mls of water in each lens and to leave it there with the goggles fitted over the eyes. Introduce just enough water so that when you shake your head gently, the water will wash over the inside of the lens. If when your head turns to breathe the water goes in your eye/s, you have too much water inside the goggles - it won't take long to experiment and get the right amount. Then every time there is any fogging, just gently shake your head while swimming and you will have perfect fog-free vision again.

I tried plain soap (like really pure plain soap) and it didn't really work, then i tried a drop of moisturizing shampoo and it worked really well. I'm think the shampoo leaves a layer of moisturizer behind which holds water (try it on your mirror) and that's actually preventing the fog from building up.

I find that the anti fog solution is good as long as it is used accurately. It should be the same brand as the goggles you purchased. For example, I use Aquasphere goggles so I use Aquasphere anti fog drops. How to use: dry the lens after swimming and apply one drop on the inside of each lens, rub this drop into each lens and let sit overnight. The next day, lightly tissue off any excess. This works for me. The only drawback is when the temperature of the outdoor pool is much warmer than the air or vice versa. It is more likely to fog up. It took me years to find the right way of using the anti fog drops. They say apply and wait two minutes or so before use. This never worked for me. I will try the shampoo idea.

Hey folks. I'm an exterminator and I use a full face respirator. My respirator used to fog up all the time and I can't have that. I need to protect my clients by making sure I'm not misapplying. It is very important for me to ensure the safety of my clients. I find that putting some shaving cream on the inside of my mask and buffing it out until it's clear works better than anything else I've tried. Give it a shot. I'm not sure if it will work for diving but I've tried everything else and nothing works better or lasts longer for me than this method.

6:30 it's not meant to work on that kind of goggle, it's for scuba masks. The reason it works is that those come from the factory with a silicone protective layer that keeps them looking new and free from scratches during the manufacturing and retail process but promotes fogging, so you use a flame to burn that coating off.

Burning scuba goggles helps only because usually they are made out of glass and have some coating on them that can be burned away. So this does help before using them the first time (same as with toothpaste) but is not suitable plastic swimming goggles, it works wonders for the tempered glass scuba ones though. As for me with the swimming goggles, I clean them with toothpaste every now and them. Makes them taste better while licking ;)

As a veteran of around 1000 scuba dives, I use Johnson's Baby shampoo. A tiny drop on each lens and then smear over the whole surface, rinse and it lasts for the whole of my hour in the pool. Scuba divers need clear vision much more than swimmers as they need to read their instruments, depth gauge, computer, compass, contents gauges etc. However, they have the advantage that they can remove their mask and refit it which clears any fogging.

Dipping them in the pool is actually the worst idea you could have. That's probably why my other 3 pairs got foggy after a while. The chlorine from the pool water will actually ruin the anti fog layer. So, when you try out your new pair of goggles, be very aware every time you take them off in the pool. A swimming instructor told me this, and since that, my goggles have (almost) been fog-free!

Not just tip it in the water, but leave a small drop of water in it. When it gets foggy just shake your head and keep going. I thought that is the hole point of dipping the goggles in the water in the first place.

As a scuba diver, the reason behind using a flame is to burn off a silicone layer on the glass lenses. It won’t melt anything as the face seal is made of silicone and doesn’t burn or melt. Once the silicone from the glass is burnt off, the chances of fogging are reduced dramatically.

So your eyes are made of mostly water. And even with dry goggles, the temperature difference between your body and the pool water, PLUS the fact that moisture is always evaporating from your eyes, are gonna cause fog. Likely the shampoo/soap (and toothpaste for that matter) because most contain some type of glycerin, which forms a film and is a humectant (ie absorbs moisture) thus absorbing the humidity escaping from your eyes.

No.1 - they WILL fog up, so learn to deal with it. In the pool it shouldn't be any problem (and I kind of like the idea of swimming in my own world having only a black blurred line to guide me). But in OW... No.2 - when the anti-fog wears off, I use baby shampoo to a) clean all the grease, and b) leave a thin coat that will prevent fogging for a couple of days (just apply a little bit, and rins off with fresh watter making sure you leave as little as you can. It works just the same way as repalce anti-fog spray (I've tried them), is much cheaper and you can take the scent of your baby daughter with you for motivation. Do this specially the day before as OW swim, practice or race.

Re. Flame, you misunderstood the purpose: it is only intended for (1) *new* dive masks with (2) GLASS LENSES!!!! The idea is to burn-off any silicone and/or release agent left on the inside of the glass lens(es) from the manufacturing process. It works but it is entirely inappropriate for plastic swim goggles! Scrubbing with white toothpaste (e.g. Colgate) is a popular alternative to using a flame (I use a flame first and then clean up around the edges with toothpaste). Definitely worth doing. Some masks/manufacturers need this more than others (e.g. Omer Alien masks really need this cleaning, in my experience).

the anti fogging solution never really worked for me. I even degreased my goggles in my ultrasonic cleaner(the anti fog coating is alrdy worn off, so it's okay) and then applied it, yes the goggle don't fog too bad, but instead bigger drops of water start to form, so i can see somehow. It also didn't work on my sunglasses. Funny thing, when i asked the shop owner"Does this actually work?" And he honestly answered"Well, you should use it more as a cleaning solution, rather than anti fog soltion"

Soap works on the same principle as spit, it maintains a film of water on the inner surface, so it cannot fog. I just use some shampoo or hand soap from a sink in the locker room and rinse it well, but not too well in the shower. Reapply on every swim or every other swim. In my experience using saliva eventually gets grease on the lenses, and then saliva does not manage to maintain a film. Detergent is much better in this respect, it both cleans the greases off and maintains a film!

Well that was the end of the coating. It was only left in the crevasses where I couldn’t run. So don’t use antibacterial hand soap.

Should have taken the science thing a bit further. Condensation occurs due to temperature difference. But the humidity in the air determines the amount of fog on the lense forming. So to me it doesnt make sense to ADD moisture into the goggles by washing then beforehand. Even washing out antifog/saliva/soap just before swimming doesnt make sense. So i think coating with antifog/soap/saliva onto try lenses..wait a bit for a layer to form and dry..then wash out…BUT then let them dry before using…bit of a hassle timingwise…worth a try.
