I’m sad that once they hear the value of their pieces, the say they’ll never wear it again. That’s a shame. Unless it’s fragile, they should enjoy wearing it and then pass it on, gift it or sell it. But while they have it, wear it!

Another reason to think of the Roman Empire.
That last piece: what a story behind that piece. AND it’s exquisite. Wow. Must be worth 10X that valuation today in 2024.
One of the truly greatest aspects of this show, is when those without massive means find they have something of amazing value (it truly changes their lives). I can remember watching the USA version and there was this one particular woman, who clearly came from vast wealth - her time on that segment was like her speaking to appraiser in a "hurry up and tell me if this is worth anything" kind of way, only to then be like "oh, only that much" and then proceed to act like she was happy and wouldn't sell anything, when it was clearly written all over her face how she truly felt. Fast forward to another segment where a woman found out she had an important art piece and broke down crying, knowing that it's sale is going to change her and her families lives forever. Truly appreciative of the fact that an ancestor lived an amazing life, was gifted that painting - they could sell up to a museum that would take care of the painting, allow them to see it and relay the story for generations to come while having benefited financially in a positive way (not someone already rich 20 times over that is ungrateful and would only on sell to the highest bidder on the private market).
I love the craftsmanship and ingenuity you see in historical jewelry. Especially things like the brooch that converts into a hairpin or the posy holder that has a little built in stand. It’s the perfect fusion of practicality and whimsy.

I did that. When I was a teen. At a flea market I found an egg shaped pietra dura brooch, covered in greasy green gunk. It became mine for roughly half a US dollar. Back home I spent at least a couple of hours, using an old toothbrush and toothpaste to clean the grease away from the yellow frame. To discover it's 18 carat gold ! The pietra dura has a flower bouquet motive. In red, green and caramel colours of carnelian, agathe, and chrysophrase. Missing only a couple of black grains, as it is set in a black paste, rather than onyx. I guess a previous owner thought it was just rubbish... Love from Norway 🇧🇻

Diamonds: I wanted to add a 3/4 carat diamond to my wife’s dinner ring. I went to my local jeweler and described what I thought I wanted. He described how it could be done and told me it would be $8,000.00. So we have probably invested in our last jewelry. The kids should be happy though. When we were first married, long ago, our jeweler friend made lots of things for me to give to Carol. All the diamonds were flawless and all the gold was 18 carat. I probably spent less than a thousand dollars on each item, average. There are probably 100 items. And she wears them. But now we are old and time marches on. I don’t think that a thirty-ish lady today goes anywhere where amazing jewelry is worn. And that is really a shame.
So beautiful ❤
I attended the auction and bought a 19th century repoussé mirror and lot of 4 paintings. The gesso mirror you mentioned did sell. I don't remember the sale price but I do remember that is had been damaged during transport to the auction. One of the mirror squares had a large crack in it. That crack prevented us from bidding on it.
@PlatinumIrishrose

So sad. Isn't the transport company responsible for replacing that? It wouldn't have stood on the gallery floor if had been damaged. At least not where my sister worked in a Minnesota auction company. She was so lucky! She got to model their auction jewelry!😂❤❤

Inflation isn’t the ‘only reason’ that antiques go up in value.
I often wonder where these pieces are now, one hopes that the gold and silver hasn't ended up in a melting pot due to the value of gold/silver and the pieces not in fashion now.

This was from the 90s so those quotes would be higher today. Other than that, unless it’s by a famous workshop and therefore collectible, most pieces of jewelry are tied to trends that go in and out of style. After all, nobody really needs posy holders or wears mourning jewelry anymore. It’s sad, but for most of them the value would come from being broken down for the precious metals and having the stones reworked into a more modern setting.
@excession3076
6 ай бұрын
@@juliadagnall5816 Not past a certain age I think, or those with excellent workmanship regardless of signature. There are thousands of collectors of all sorts of jewelry (mourning jewelry is a big market for collectors) and objects made of precious metals/jewels. And few of them consider wearability or use to be a factor. I would say the only piece that was in danger of being broken up was the pin with the 2ct brown diamond. You have to keep in mind that there are not enough objects made by famous historic workshops to supply the demand. Same in the artworld when it comes to signed paintings. So, for instance, paintings are attributed to "schools/studios", often unsigned but still attract a hefty price. And as the world gets richer, more people have the money to collect.
These pieces would be worth way more money today.

As a jeweler, so many believe diamonds are what hold value, when in reality, it's the colored gems, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, etc. Unless a diamond is truly remarkable, it won't hold much value on the secondary market, where as a nice quality ruby or a sapphire will increase in value over time.

As a gemstone collector, I treasure gems for being rare. Over the years, visiting local stone and mineral fairs, vendors always ask what I'm in the market for. My answer is "Something so rare it barely exists"... I once chose a Norwegian Emerald over a Colombian one. And a cherry red flawless heart shape cut fire opal over a harlequin Australian black opal. Some might call that madness, but that's fine with me. I've been crazy for gems for over 50 years... Love from Norway 🇧🇻

Truth. My dad purchased a small diamond every year to add to an anniversary ring for my mom. I think he paid $1,000 per stone. Based on what he paid, it should have been worth $12,000. When I think of how hard he worked to get enough money to buy that ring, makes me sick to think of what it's worth today. 😢 He should have put the money in the bank. And she never wore the ring!
