    Hello all! Happy Sunday and Mother’s Day to anyone who celebrates! It’s a rainy day here in fairyland but the flowers are happy! I left the link to the hairdresser shop where I bought the hair dye in the description box because so many of you have been asking!! I hope you are all well. Sending you love from Ireland! 💕☘️🐝🌈

    I started to be conscious when I came across your channel a few years back. I agree, it is not easy, messy at times however the happiness and fulfillment after doing your own DIY without care in comparing the results is a true gem. Honestly, I am a work in progress on my sustainable living and zero waste lifestyle but the key here is not to force yourself because that is where disappointment, frustrations comes in. I have tried some of Niamh recipes and make variations too depending on what is available at home and it amaze me of what can be done. Happy Mothers Day to all the lovely ladies in this community! ✨✨🌸❤️

    One fundamental we live by is not allowing others judgments of how we live take root. I don't know why but living sustainably really ticks some folks off and we just have to ignore it.

    My husband and I grew up in more "urban" environments. But when we had kids, we decided to move to a much more rural area and purchased some land. EVERYTHING was new to us and we made many mistakes. But, now after 27 years we have a huge garden and put up veggies to last through out the year! I also have serious health issues and am sensitive to chemicals. I really appreciate all I have learned from YOU!! Thank you!

    In a round-about way, I think that living a sustainable lifestyle means spending time at home, which, we are all doing a lot of these days. When we’re at home we’re cooking (and in some cases growing) our own food, making and repairing our favourite things instead of purchasing more stuff, using package-free items that we have shopped hard to find, conserving fossil fuel by not driving around, and creating our own entertainment and physical activity. I know this is hard on small businesses, but I think it is better for the planet... this is a bit of a conundrum. Thanks for this video today Niamh, it was great 🌿🌸💜

    7:00 am on Sunday means it is time to watch Fairyland Cottage! It's a great way to begin my Sunday. I never knew that there were natural hair dyes like the one you used. It turned out so pretty I think. Did you like how it ended up? You're right about things not always be aesthetically pleasing. Eco-friendly/sustainable doesn't always equate to our society's standard of beauty, but that's okay! Blessings to you my friend!! :)

    This was such an empowering list! I especially liked what your said about compromise. So often, we can get caught up in what we can't do and can become overwhelmed with how unsustainable things can be. But this made me think about all that can be done. We still have the ability and power to make choices. Maybe they aren't always perfect but compromising still requires to think through the options with what you've got choice with, and you can try and make an informed choice verses thinking 'what's the point'.

  • @Megan.eco-Instinct
    @Megan.eco-Instinct3 жыл бұрын

    You pointed out several really important things here today. Reminding people that a truly simple and sustainable life isn't always the most beautiful - it certainly can be! Most times it is for me, but not always. It *is* about making that smart choice *even when* it means compromising a bit on the final look. And the other *oh so absolutely important* reminder that we should *not* listen to judgmental people who devote all of their time looking for places to pile on their sanctimony. (sigh) It's *ALL* about doing what we can and what works best in our lives. It's so odd how people are now-a-days. What rational person would have ever thought that someone could take issue with someone deciding to use a blow dryer. It continually shocks me, the length people will go to invade people's lives with their demands on it should be lived. I'm old enough to remember a time when decent, mannered people would *never* behave like that. Anyway, it was wonderful to hear you remind folks it feels great to make these sustainable choices and to focus on choices that are *right for them* while ignoring all incoming nonsense.

    DIY beauty care can indeed be messy. Goodness, the kind of soap alternatives one use can be nightmarish at first. But one gets used to it with time, & the results are so great over the long term you just tend to disregard a mild inconvenience 😃

    I am a furniture painter, DIYer, and artist, and I absolutely love using clay-based paints, stains, and sealants for my projects. Yes! I love you pointing out that sustainable life is not always "beautiful" like every video showed, sometimes it is rather a mess. When I first started to live a sustainable life, I followed the KZreadrs to buy a lot of new eco-friendly stuff to make my room looks like that type. When looking back, I guess I was just dropping in a new way of wasting. Now, I realize that sustainable life is not a stereotype and everyone can start doing it without buying new "beautiful" things.

    Happy Sunday, Niahm.Your shelves turned out lovely - the vinegar will freshen the air at the same time. A win-win! Your hair looks so shiny and the colour gave it depth. Well done. I used to colour my hair blonde (like my younger self) with natural products, but since COVID I have grown it out and embraced my grey. I've tried before but wasn't ready, I guess. I'm pleased with it this year. Again this year I planted a 5gallon pot of my favourite herbs and added a pot of mint for my husband's morning tea. Also found a long self-watering planter that fits on the steps in front of our mast and am growing mixed salad greens. Tonight we harvested some and had a lovely fresh salad with plenty of other veggies and some leftover chicken breast. Such a sense of accomplishment and enjoyed the simplicity of gathering my dinner in a woven basket to the sounds of Bald Eagles singing on the beach. Heavenly. Look forward every Sunday and your uploads, they make every Sunday a happy Sunday. Cheers! From Canada's west coast.

    I too love when you said "do'n't be attached to the outcome". That's a struggle for me! 2 Years ago this month I decided to stop dying my hair, mainly because I was going to the hairdresser every 2 weeks and with a semi permanent dye, the roots were showing within a couple of days. My hair is almost waist length and at first it looked awful. What a journey, but I'm really happy with the silver color, my hair is healthier, and I'm saving time and money. I'm glad you found a natural solution and your hair looks beautiful :)

    In the summer I use henna, like you used, but I wash it out in the garden with the garden hose, it doesn't clog my drains and it feeds the garden. In winter, I use a different henna product, not so thick. I also just made soap for the first time - OMG why didn't I do this sooner?!! All the fear about making soap held me back, easy, super cheap, and rose petals from the garden -- ha, ever really happy with yourself and then blame yourself for not doing it sooner, and then forgive yourself and wash it off with soap!! lol love the wood shelves, going to do that one soon!

    Thank you Niamh for the lovely video as always. I was always intrigued by Ireland , such a beautiful country. We get to see glimpses through you. Your videos inspired me to try eliminating soap, now me & my toddler bathe in chickpea flour. I'm using soap nut powder to wash vessels. I'm using washable & reusable sanitary pads & potty trained my son early 😅All thanks to you I'm trying to go back to my roots & not try to burden mother earth more. Jai Sri Krishna 🙏

    I have always bought the herbs in pot as they seem way more sensible as they are really fresh and if you care for them they keep making leaves for ago. I have a basil plant bought 6 months ago and it is survived all winter and is still going strong. I haven’t had a stable enough living environment for more permanent plants but a pot of herbs look beautiful and a very useful.

    Love those shelves, they would look good with some wooden brackets, I made a set several years ago from a piece of wood and a paint can lid and a glass! I cut a slice of wood into a square then put the large can lid on the one side to make a arched shape then used the glass to add a little cut out from the big arched bit,you end up with a perfect l shape block with beautiful detail ,and just screw it as you would normal brackets, Not sure about that hair dye mind,I remember using herbal hair dye many years ago and apart from the stink of it,my hands and everything the dye touched still had it on 6 months later lol...

    Been watching@crazy for Indian food about village cooking, how simple ingredients from the field are turned into nutritional meals with such respect and humility. I am still learning to use up every last ingredient.

    As I was watching the part about wood stain, a light bulb went off on my mind! A lot of people use burnt motor oil to stain outside decks, maybe use burnt vegetable or olive oil for stain. I am going to try this. Thanks for the inspiration. Sincerely.
