8 Day Black Forest Regula Cuckoo Clock Cleaning Oiling Waxing

I have this 8 Day Cuckoo Clock that I bought from GW, on line action. You can tell it fell off the wall several times and several times they tried to glue it back together, they finally gave up and sent it to GW.
Here I cleaned it and got it running and looking good again.
All I have to say is hang your clocks on the wall, but make sure you hit the stub behind the sheet rock to secure the weight of the clock.
Now that I am retired, I just might show my life and some of the towns around me. I enjoy working on Cuckoo Clocks and clocks in general, How to repair vacuums, fans and things form the thrift stores, besides the thrift store finds, and working on houses. Time Lapse, Bird & Sky watching along with gardening. Helping my Dad with things he loved to do, along with taking dad and his wife to breakfast.
My Brother and Dad, live on the same Dead End Road and yea, maybe we just might get into trouble a little, but have fun doing it. It is time to start smelling the Roses on the way instead of looking at them and passing them by.

    Hey there Mike! I have just recently found your channel but I am in love with your work. You do an amazing job of giving direction and helpful tips, you explain everything in a very human way. I have absolutely no background in clocks, but I have always found them so interesting. I have found myself in possession of several not-functioning clocks after some unsupervised time on eBay, and your videos have given me to motivation to tackle the project of fixing them all. Thanks for the great videos!

    I get criticized from the Experts for not using the exact name of the parts. I try to make it easy for the ones that have one or two clocks that would like to try their hand at fixing their own clock. I don't want to scare them away with names that will be over their head. I do need to make a video on the timing issue when I have the clock apart so they can see the part I talk about that triggers the warning pin gear and where it needs to be set. This video will have to come out after Christmas because I am a bit ahead on my videos. Thanks so much for letting me know what you are up to and enjoying my videos Gran Black.

    You did a great job Mike. in repairing this clock. It is an E Schmeckenbecher clock. I would guess that it was made in the late 60s since it only marked 34. In 1970 Regula used a date/letter code to identify when they were made. Big difference in the clock. Great job explaining things.

    Great video Mike. The only problem that I seen is that the 1230 needs to be down below in the mouth of the packman or snail as it is called and not up on top where the 1 O'clock position. If you continued on you might find that the hours dont work proper around 5 or maybe 6 as the snail turns around.

I have two blocks where the bird comes out but the door does not shut so I am going to have to check that bar to make sure it is on the right side of the peg! Any suggestions please let me know! Thank you mike for the great videos !

  • @justmike57

    Some clocks can handle a tighter spring set for the door to snap shut. Some clocks have a problem with the tighter spring because the weights are small and not enough power to get the trigger to work. Check your rod that the bird is on. Make sure the crimp area on the rod isn't too tight. Sometimes I have to add oil to the areas that drag on the metal so the levers can slide on better. Thanks so much for watching and learning with my videos Barb Dixon.

  • @munnerlyn3

    @munnerlyn3

    You also want to check the tail of the bird. Make sure that it isnt resting on the wire that lifts the tail when the clock has finished cuckooing. If it does then it will not allow the door to close. Or sometimes it closes and other times it doesnt close. I have a video on other things to look for on my you tube channel.

    An eight day can have it's issues. All clocks should be re-oiled every 5 year to keep the oil from gumming up along with the dust. Also an 8 day can not go long with wore out bushings compared to a one day clock. Not sure what issues you are having.

    Nice video! Do you ever replace bushings? I find with these old clocks if the bushings are worn, especially on a 8 day movement the clock always keeps stopping even with a good cleaning.

  • @justmike57

    @justmike57

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes I do replace bushings sometimes, but I don't show it because most people can't replace them without special tools. If I have a clock that needs the bushings replaced, I do mention it. On the 8 day clocks with a good cleaning, some of them I find need to run for a week or two then stop. Then I have to re-oil the clock again and it takes off again. I have been told that there are fine burs on the ends of some of the gears that need polished off. Some people us a really fine stone and put the gear in a drill and run the end of the gear over the stone.

    Hello Sir, congratulations for your video. What type of product did you used to clean / lubricate the chain. Is WD40 acceptable to clean it ? Thank you

  • @justmike57

    @justmike57

    7 ай бұрын

    You could use steel wool, but that gets to be messy. If the chain is really dirty, soak it in Dawn Dish Soap and rinse the chain good. From the hardware store you can buy these reddish brown. They are like the green ones, but not as abrasive. Then if you want, you can wax the chains and wipe off the excess. The W-D40 would clean the chains, but you would want to wash them afterwards. The oil would draw dust if left on the chains.

    If you clock is secured to a stud in the wall, you should not have to worry about the clock falling. On an eight day clock, I like too lightly lift the weight as I am winding it. This makes it easier to wind up and I feel it is easier on the winder for less wear. Always make sure your clock screw or nail is in a stud. Thanks for watching and glad to hear you worked on your own clock Bubba Smith

    @@justmike57 Thanks for the reply. It’s actually not my clock. An older couple were willing to part with it in a community yard sale. I asked when it last ran and the guy said as he recalled, 50 years ago. I didn’t have the heart to take away something with memories so told him I’ll fix it for free, with no guarantees that I wouldn’t break it and make it worse. It needed several cleanings and new bellows. All that’s left is to understand the warning wheel, and broach out the new hands bigger to fit the hand shaft, then I can take it back and see how the owners react.

  • @justmike57

    @justmike57

    @@Mars-zgblbl You did good and the same way I started. Because the clock is broke, you can't break it any more so no guarantees, Yet you are willing to give it a try. If you watched my video all the way, the warning pin and the (Pac-man mouth) have to meet up so the pac-man can have the lever fall into it and the pin on the wheel gets caught by the lever. I don't do it the way I am going to tell you, but it's the easiest way to tell you, If you watch the pin, stop it at the lever that is suppose to hold it, then you can carefully turn the pac-man only to have the lever drop in his mouth.
