    the reason the coin "boils twice" is due to the liedenfrost effect. right when he dunks the coin in the alcohol the coin is so hot that a thin layer of alcohol vapor around the coin not allowing any liquid alcohol to touch the coin, after a bit the coin cools enough for this effect to break down. The liquid alcohol then touches the coin and makes the second "boiling" sound.

    Its simple for the quarter turning pinkish. The quarter is a nickel foil wrapped around a piece of copper. Since they have different boiling points, there are two different releases of air bubbles. The pink color comes from copper coming to the surface

    +TeKnODeFeCt the double boil is actually the formation and collapse of a vapor jacket. boiling points of the metals don't have anything to do with that.

    +TeKnODeFeCt The coin is so hot it forms a layer of vapors from evaporation around it so once it becomes cooled down enough the water will finally reach the coin and thats what your hearing is the coin finally being exposed to the liquid.

    for anyone who doesn't know about the "double boiling point" of the quarters in a liquid, it's not boiling twice it's called the Leidenfrost effect. basically when a liquid comes into contact with something heated far above its boiling point the liquid immediately boils and forms a layer of steam insulating the heated item and the liquid. a good demonstration of this effect is if you heat up a pan on a stove high enough and drip water slowly onto the pan the drops will go sailing across the pan thanks to a layer of steam that's created. a more interesting demonstration of this is to put you hand into liquid nitrogen, since the boiling point of liquid nitrogen is so low a person can submerge their hand into it and a layer of nitrogen gas is created from the heat in your hand and insulates it from the liquid, of course there is a point where the 2 objects equalize enough in temperature that no more steam is created and that's when the object comes into contact with the liquid, that's the second sound you hear from the quarter in the jar.

    The reason the coin got bigger is because of 'refraction of light'

  • @davidstone4937
    @davidstone49378 жыл бұрын

    The one where you put the hot coin in Ethanol has a double effect. The first, where you get like a bubble around the coin is called The Leidenfrost effect. This is where the ethanol is boiling into a layer of gas around the coin, preventing it from actually touching the coin properly. At the point where the coin cools down enough, the bubble of Ethanol gas becomes too small to prevent the Ethanol from contacting the coin. That is where you get that sudden "Fizzing" sound of Ethanol boiling directly off the surface.

    the reason why the 1971 coin changed is because around 1972 they changed from coins with no zink to coins with zink. So over time as the coin got older the coin became dirtier, but when you add a lime filled with acetic acid, the acetic acid acts apon the dirt (cleaning it, some cleaners have acetic acid in it),, and the coin from 1973 has zink so it can not act apon it, because the zink is basically making a covering or "wall" around the coin as well as the dirt. The reason why is because the Vietnam War was going on in 1973 and they needed to copper for other stuff like bullets, etc. and so when they found that the supply for copper was low and the demand was high the picked something to switch metals on and pennies were drown out and was replaced with zink.

    But what did the veitnam war have to do with it?

  • @coltonlaumb1862

    @coltonlaumb1862

    8 жыл бұрын

    The war comes into play because they needed the copper, no just read my message it explains it all. But here is the explanation, copper was the only thing in a penny back then and when the war came around and we got apart of it we needed the copper for other things for protection and ammunition and when the usa started running out of copper we needed to cut the supply on something so we cut the copper on pennies and replaced it with zink.

    +ArcheryIsKey | Ultimate Archery Wrong, dry ice temperature is extremely cold at -109.3°F. It feels like it burns because of how cold it is, it's actually freezing your skin. Your skin cells at that temperature can't tell the difference between burning or freezing. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide.

  • @mr.nobody3918

    @mr.nobody3918

    +SMDTURBO Did you know that cold isn't a thing it is actually less hot in a scientific way. For an example if you take a spoon and put it in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes then take it out and press the bottom part on you palm/hand and have a infrared camera looking at the spoon while its on your hand you will see that the spoon is taking the heat from your hand and starts to get warmer/hotter. (Also this was scientifically proven and tested on by real scientist so this is very credible and not made up.

    Hey there Taras! The water makes the coin look like it's in a different spot/bigger because when light goes through water it bends. You can try this out if you take a bottle of water and hold it up to a dollar bill. It magnifies the image because the water bends the light, making it look like the image is bigger than it is! :) (from my college Astronomy class)

    Here's how the magnetic balancing coins on the glass trick works: First, you have to get coins that have been trained in the circus, normal coins just lay around and some cannot even stand on their own. Second, British coins are used because Michael Faraday was British, and he discovered electromagnetic induction, therefore their coins are naturally attracted to magnets. Finally, the reason why you use a wine glass has to do with history, had you been alive 500 years ago, you would have used a tankard made of pottery to do this neat trick, or perhaps even silver if you were wealthy. From the industrial age on, the use of glass stemware to perform this experiment became commonplace.

    I'd say the "double boiling" effect you where talking about in the ethanol was caused by the leidenfrost effect where the temperature of the coin creates a gas bubble around it stopping any more liquid from touching the heated surface area as the coin cools more liquid is aloud to touch so it suddenly boils and cools, like when you drop water drops on a red hot pan and the drops float around due to the cushion of gas underneath

  • @CRU22

    My guess for the lime and pennies is that the acidity in the lime is eroding the collected grime on the pennies. the reason on some worked is that older pennies have more grime to erode while younger pennies have less. This is just a guess.

    The magnet one is simple. The magnet's power is in a balance with gravity, so when you put some pennies on the right position, the amount of force pulling the pennies to the magnet is equal to the force of gravity. Once you move the table the structure is standing on, that balance will fade and the pennies either fall or get attracted by the magnet. I'm not sure this is right, though.

    The 'double boiling point' is due to the leidenfrost effect. It's because at first the boiling water makes an air barrier protecting the coin from the majority of the water. At some point it gets too cold to support that air bubble and the water touches it completely

    Copper with Ethanol reaction is very simple, when you heat up the coin from copper, it will oxidise, and than, when you put the coin to ehtanol, it will give the oxygen molecule to Ethanol and produce Aldehyde. When you repeat this proces for 20 or 30 time, it will smelth sweet. Its aldehyde :) Sorry for my English

    The reasons the coin "levitates" is because the magnets have a magnetic field cycling through the center out in two ovals, the farther away from the magnetic field the weaker the pull, so the coins are still being attracted to the magnet, the magnetism just can't lift them up. It is similar to when you attempt to lift up a person who is just barely too heavy for you to pick up, they'll still feel lighter as you are still picking them up a little bit, your force is lifting them just not all the way. And just to say I'm 13 years old!!

The discoloration on old pennies is a copper oxide tarnish on them. The citrus juice is actually an acid that will remove the oxide tarnish, making them shinny once again :)

    6:05 How it happenes is because of this thing called Odd Refractions. It makes something look either distorted or bigger than before. The water acts like a prism that bends (Refracts) the light.

    Let me help you. The British coins are magnetized, when he touched them to the magnets. But they remained magnetized together when he brought them down. They still held the magnetism even when he put them on the glass because the magnets on top still held the coins together, plus the coins still carried a charge to keep them together. So the top 2 magnets supplied the constant charge the coins needed though indirect induction. Note: This is how Tesla supposedly got free power, because the earth is one big magnet. ( Example: Make a cork magnet and you will understand!)

    +Nicolas Tapies doesn't that trick work exactly the same with gumball machines? I once owned one and I put a plastic coin in there and it worked. Yet the machine was an older model of one so it may be different from today's?

    The coin in the mug thing works because of light diffraction/refraction. The light waves move more slowly when they enter the water because the water molecules block the photons. This causes the light waves to move in a different direction.
