8 Arkham Horror Cards That Are Just A Bit Too Good

Ойын-сауық

Join me for a list video for the cards that I think are undercosted for their effects! Which cards do you think are a bit too good? Do you play with them anyways? #arkhamhorrorlcg

Hey, this was some great analysis! I do have some things to add from my experience: - Brand of Cthuga is insane. Yeah, it is a slotless Guardian weapon. But it's also better than Mystic combat spells - it doesn't waste charges on miss, it can be easily recharged with Ghastly Possession, and it has a controllable drawback - just push your skill 1 over the biggest token (yeah, I don't play on extreme, but on Hard it's managable with how much passive Willpower mystics have). It is on the point where I don't play combat mystic spells other than Brand, unless I'm doing something silly (token manip Jacqi, Armageddon shenanigans, SIgn Magick) - While Arcane Res is unfair and overpowered, I do believe it is a necessary patch for the early failure of Mystic design. Mystic spells are the only way they can do anything, and you pay premium to do the same thing but worse. Yeah, .45 automatic? +1 skill, +1 damage, 4 charges? Shriveling3 does almost the same thing, but also kills you slowly. And this goes on. Arcane Research has to be this way in order for mystics to pay for their bad overcosted early spells, and FFG has to build their identity against them. It's also easy to balance if you are afraid of some new Mystic that will abuse AR - just give them less sanity. On the other hand, rabbit hole is absurd in the right build - it gives you XP credit, basically. You start scaling faster, so later scenarios are easier, so you gain more XP and counteract the downside. I'm now playing a Lili campaigh, where Hole is just straight up 6 free experience. I upgraded 2 Stand Together for just 4 xp, I got my Runic Axe both Ancient Power and Scriptweaver after the second one. I haven't paid a single xp for the Hole drawback yet, it just gave me 4. Scenario 3 and I'm on the powerlevel of scenario 4, it's just bananas - Ancestral Token would be my addition to the list. This card is just beyond amazing, you can play it in a simple fighter list if you don't have any accessories. Passive bless gain will push you to 10 every single scenario, which has no downsides at all. And it soaks sanity, too - Masks are another addition. Wolf and Cat masks in particular. They just recharge passively, giving you +2 in stat when you need it. I play them in every deck since Feast released

I'm going to go with the Scroll of Secrets level 0 Taboo. It's a multiclass staggered draw three that can be tutored with Backpack and do some neat things with some investigators. It's not as pushed as the list presented in the video but I find myself adding it way more frequently than most cards.

And it's ridiculously cheap! I get that the original untabooed version was unplayable but what they changed it to is really good.

I agree with you about all these cards. My personal pick would be Sword Cane. It's both a combat and an evade solution for the low cost of two resources and a single hand slot. It doesn't have Uses, and you don't even have to play it before the enemy shows up. Should cost an XP or two.

Have you seen the Beta Sword Cane upgrade? It's a level 2 card and automatically deals a damage to an enemy upon entering play. It was designed on an FFG stream earlier this year and definitely needs some playtesting. You can find it on FFG's Arkham website under "print and play" cards if you're interested.

After having played Brand of Cthugha in my most recent guardian deck, I can agree that it is in fact a little too good.

Great video! I didn't know about a few of these.

Surprised the pictured Existential Riddle wasn't on here. Because you're a seeker this is usually an easy test, then you can just instantly deal with a 4-6HP enemy in most cases (unless it's a cultist/deep one assault or something). It's even better than defeating them because they won't reshuffle! What annoys me the most is when I read "This is how seeker enemy management should be". No, seeker should not be able to remove enemies from the game easily and better than other classes... the new Transmogrify is more of the same thing.

Maybe my thought process was that it falls into the category of "way too good" and not "a bit too good". I agree with you, probably the card would be better off if the riddle went away after a round or two.

So you have me wondering... what's your take on Scavenging, and recursion in general?

I like Scavenging as a way to pick up stuff from the Discard pile that you haven't already played, e.g. it was in the discard pile with Short Supply or got randomly discarded. I think Survivors don't have much card draw so the idea that their discard pile is their "draw deck" is intriguing to me. Ultimately it's pretty ripe for abuse for things that self-discard, like OKR or cheap assets that get defeated. It's tough, though, because this is clearly a design of the class, and fixing it is like playing Whack-a-Mole. A lot of things could Remove From Game, but maybe just Resourceful should have it and Scavenging (esp level 2) should just have uses. I'm currently using a Calvin deck with Scavenging that feels pretty fair because it takes some time for it to get online, and then the scenario is pretty much over already, unlike, say, Darrell where succeeding by 2 just happens right out of the box. So I'm not sure recursion is the problem rather than enablers of its abuse.
