excellent informative video , i shot hft quite a lot in the past , I always shot hft at 9 mag , as it would put the 45 yard exactly at 1 mildot , You could always shoot another 45 yard group and adjust the magnification until it coinsides with the 1 mildot mark ( second focal plane scopes of course)

Thanks. An excellent point! I will get to that in a video about choosing magnification. So much info to cover but don't want to overburden newbies and make the videos too long. 😀👍

excellent way of doing an easy range check and card . only i thing i would add is make sure one shoots prone to check it’s the same as well as kneeling and standing for me it’s pretty similar but my mate has a slightly different set of aim points on his standers

I would suggest you use the most stable rest available to get an accurate point of impact.

That’s why I prefer FFP scopes, so aim points stay the same regardless of magnification. When I was using SFP, had a lot of notes after doing the same as you have done but the hold over/under at different ranges and magnifications.

If your hunting then FFP is the way to go, but in HFT I'm not allowed to adjust my scope during a comp so my aim points are always set to one mag and SFP makes sense.

Or you can just use a ballistic calculator like chairgun or strelok or even just a simple free one theres plenty of them to figure out your holdovers or turret adjustments.

You can, but it won't be as accurate as this method, plus most shooters don't want to use an app! Further, in UK HFT you can't adjust your turrets during a competition.

Just one question, would it be more accurate to alter your parallex for each range or would this introduce errors when you reset your scope to your HTF setting. I did notice your card had different thicknesses of line for the ranges which would be blurred using a fixed parallex. Thanks.

Yes, get the best focus you can at each range when working out your card.

Thanks for the prompt reply, appreciated. Think the problem I’m experiencing at the moment is inconsistent scope alignment! Practice, practice, practice! When I up my skill level perhaps I’ll catch up with you at Cambridge.

I’ve found that my holdovers actually change slightly when shooting at my HFT parallax (25 yds) compared to the parallax for the range I’m shooting at. On my hawk sidewinder/.177 R10 setup 8 yds is 2.8 mil but if I have parallax set to 25 yds it’s only about 1.5 mil.

@@Sonic32084Thanks Sonic, really don’t quite understand why that should be the case, as changing the parallax should only give a sharper horizontal line to aim for in my simple mind! However, if that’s what you’re finding there is obviously something happening. Just out of interest, did you shoot your range card from a bench position? As I have just started shooting HFT (using a springer) I think my aim points are work in progress.

@@martinsprout846 no problem at all. Im only a year into HFT although I’ve been shooting for years. I used to shoot from a bench to make a range card but now I do it from down on the mat. I end up with more real world results when I’m in an HFT type position. This is going through ranges 8 to 45 yds while keeping parallax at 25 yds and zoom at x10. I then note exactly what holdover and windage adjustments I need to make for each ranger hit a 10mm target. They’re slightly different to being on the bench. It’s very strange but I think it’s something to do with the way I interpret the blur and parallax error with my head positioning. It’s definitely better to practice in the positions you would be in for HFT pegs. It’s really about getting in the same position with the gun every time.
