On August 2, 1964, The Rolling Stones give a concert at the Third Pop Festival in Warminster, Wiltshire, UK.
The Festival took place at the Wiltshire manor house, Longleat House, near Warminster, which until 1946, was a private residence, however the property suffered financially so its owner, the 6th Marquess of Bath, Henry Frederick Thynne , decided to open it to the public to raise funds to maintain and preserve the house and gardens.
In 1961, jazz legend Acker Bilk appeared in an open-air concert at this beautiful manor house.
In May 1964 Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas had also performed, who had already released their single Little Children that reached number 1 on the billboards at that time, and 13,000 fans attended.
And in June Irish trio The Bachelors, famous for hits like 'Diane', 'I Believe' and 'Whispering', were supported by Trowbridge's Gog and the Reefers and Bristol's Danny Clarke and the Jaguars.
This third festival that had as its main show the Rolling Stones, who at that time, had achieved their first number one single in the United Kingdom with their version of Bobby Womack's 'It's All Over Now', their popularity being only due to that of The Beatles reached an attendance of 16,000 people

There was such a violent outcry for the band at the show that more than 200 fans were treated for minor injuries.
One policeman is reported to have said: "We could easily have a few dead on our hands if things continue as they are." But luckily things didn't escalate that much.
The band was paid £1000 to appear and was supported by Danny Clarke and The Jaguars and Tony Rivers and The Castaways.
This was probably the first big outdoor concert in the 1960s", being the first time anyone had seen crowds like this, or at least not in Wiltshire.
To some the Stones' performance looked sloppy, their timing was all over the place.
Certainly after this gig the band was truly catapulted to stardom and never performed in Wiltshire again.
But for Wiltshire, 1964 will always be their Rolling Stones Stones year.
