7MM Performance Part 1

Спорт

Randy goes over a bit of progression of the 7MM and the different 7MM performances, how they relate to each other in performance and desirability for big game hunting. Are the new calibers better than the first 7MM’s?

7mm Remington magnum in a 700 action is my absolute favorite thing to shoot long range. It is a relatively level shooter and 880 yards is child's play. Second is my Serbu RN-50, it's a cheap 50bmg but it is more accurate than the Barrett at 1760 yards. The 7mm Remington magnum will shoot 1760 yards easy but I wouldn't take game at anything over 500 yards.

Getting closer is what hunting should be. Sometimes the closest you can get is 400 yards across a canyon, which means there’s a river or creek between you and the elk; I would have to pass that one up here in Western Oregon.

IMHO the 7mm08 is an unsung hero in the hunting world.. I haven't shot anything past 350 yards with mine yet(don't really plan to either). But everything I've shot with it; mule deer, and elk. Has been bang flops. Low recoil and plenty of energy to bust thru an elks shoulders.

You won't be disappointed. I have a 7-08 in a bergara b 14 and it shoots moa or less with all the factor loads I have shot in it. Works excellent on deer. Longest shot on a deer that I have made was a little over 300 yards. 139 gr hornady interlock through both lungs and out the other side.

I bought a Cooper firearms in a 28 nosler 4 years ago . Great gun for sitting on a hillside glasing and taking long shots " longest shot 525" but it's on the hevey side for hiking all day with. Last year I bought a Howa in a 7mm-08 nice light little gun I plan on buying some 308 brass and necking them down to 7mm-08 and loading them up with some 140 grain barns ttsx.

I understand every gun is different, just what I found with mine, I shot 140 nosler accubonds, and had a heck of a time drumming up a load with 140 grain ttsx that would pattern worth a dang. I ended up having to drop down to a 120 grain ttsx and throw a max charge at it as everything I read stated they thrived on speed. That being said it retains 98 percent weight, so it's still delivering the energy of a lead core bullet that typically retains 63 percent.. take it for what it's worth just my experience

I really do respect and appreciate Randy! I enjoy hearing Randy's history. Like it or not, I believe the 7mm PRC will be a success. This will be the first prc I get on board with. For Hornady, the only flop will be is if they can't get 7mm prc ammo on the shelves. Plus, It won't be a barrel burner. I don't much care for the eldx either. I've had two blow up on game so far. Maybe it's hard and brittle as opposed to soft and pliable. I do like the heavy 30 cal eldx's. No one person comes close to Nathan Foster's training and knowledge. I go with what he teaches. "It's all about pay load" when it come to elk. The industry already has faster 7 mills in the market. These fast 7mm's do burn barrels out faster. I'd rather have a heavy bullet'd 30 cal for elk, anyways. 7mm prc or not, these guys can still miss or make a poor shot, and they do. Most people should not be shooting long range. They should receive professional training, practice a lot in a two or 3 man team. They should have a quality spotting scope and a good camera. And the guys on that equipment should know what to look for. Time, time to set up for the shot. Dont rush. Poor shots are easy to make. It's much better to be over gunned then under, especially with elk. Jesus is truly King of kings and Lord of lords. Thanks Randy, God bless you. 7mm x 300 Win Mag Improved sounds like the ticket. I'd like to build a 7mm Practical, designed by Nathan Foster.

I thank you for your knowledge. I'm a hard-core 7 Rem mag hunter. 7 PRC won't make it out of the starting gate. The 7 prc is no better than the 7 rem mag, so why bother with this cartridge. 7 rem mag is easy to find in stores and the price is good. Spend time shooting your rifle and less time goofing around with stupid BS.

I use the 7mm Remington mag exclusively. It simply works. I don't shoot game at stupid distance. It groups under an inch with factory ammo. 7mm Rem mag is a good entry level elk cartridge especially if you do get lucky to hunt elk in Kentucky, Pennsylvania or Virginia. I think that's where it shines in woodland environments. Also if you are an inexperienced younger hunter and recoil from larger magnums is an issue. To me 7mm Rem mag's felt recoil isn't much more than 30-06. You keep your shots 400 and in you are golden. I also emphasize use the correct bullet as well. The Eld-x and SST is OK for deer, antelope and Varmints. Don't use said bullet on elk same with hogs and black bear. Since I hunt mainly in VA and PA our problem is coyotes. We contend with that every year. Here's something interesting, 7mm Rem mag can be loaded down safely to .280 Rem/.270 Win velocities for whitetail hunting. I like the 140gr Nosler partition, or accubond going around 2900fps. I like the 7mm Rem mag because of versatility, load it down for woodland deer, run normal Accubonds, and partitions in160gr and 175gr loads for hogs, black bear and elk. I don't like hail Mary shots. I prefer to shoot game no further and in inside, my rifles maximum point blank range. No farther than 400 tops. I agree that this elr (extreme long range) stuff should stay into the tactical and competition world. In my opinion this ELR junk has become popular because of the tactical and competition world. A lot of technologies the military uses has become affordable to civilians. Manufacturers need to sell their wares to civilians because the military doesn't need this stuff anymore. Gun writers get paid from said Manufacturers whether they like to admit to it or not. These Gun writers act as salesman for any Manufacturer. Often times they promote bad habits that are quite frankly unethical. In my neck of the woods these gun writers sell the lie and encourage folks to use 22 cal centerfires for deer! Ive seen and heard of stories of guys losing deer shot with .223's. People like shiny new things that's how they get you. People view what some of these gun writers have to say as Gospel. Gun Writers should focus on the Truth. High BC'S ,that only matters in tactical and competition applications. High BC'S only help with wind deflection. It's not by a significant margin like the salesman make it out to be. When you hunt at reasonable and ethical ranges for most people which is 200-300 yards high bc bullets don't really matter and it's a moot point. It's bullet construction. This is especially true if you hunt mainly in woodland environments. Well anyway, know that your videos and knowledge are appreciated. I wish more folks would listen to what you have to say and would quit drinking the proverbial coolaid.

Thats a stretch into conspiracy theory. According to your point of view there is someone with similar values, a shared love of hunting and shared enjoyment of firearms lying in wait to deceive you in every video or magazine article to make a commission that amounts to pennies. That is just non sense. Let people think for themselves. Yes people suck at this, but its not your place or my place to control them. I take ethical shots and teach my students to improve their skills and get closer rather than risk the animal. I never take a shot for which I have not proven the exact rifle, ammunition, scope, etc on paper targets at the exact range, grouped at that exact range, and done the calculations to determine sufficient energy and velocity is remaining for the bullet to perform. But expecting everyone else to do that just because we do it is an unreasonable expectation. We just need to coach and promote the best ways, stay upbeat, laugh at the sillyness. People will always be silly.

Having graduated HS, around 65-early66 I decided I needed a big game centerfire rifle. A sporting goods store in a nearby big city had a selection of used rifles on the wall, and that surplus 98 Mauser for $18, if I remember, became mine! I bought a box of surplus 8mm to go with it and headed out to the desert to try it out. Not one round out of 20 fired. I guess 20 years was past the shelf life of WWII German primers. I took the rifle back and paid the extra dollar or two to upgrade to the other 98 Mauser on the wall, a somewhat sporterized (stock shortened and varnished) which had been chambered to .30-06. It began life as a 1909 Argentine Mauser, and I've since learned many were later converted from 7.65 mauser to .30-06, even though the barrel's were in .311 caliber. I never new of this back in the 60's, and never shot it with anything but the stock military sights, so have no idea how it grouped. I ended up using the rifle to learn DIY gunsmithing, and I think the disassembled parts are still around here somewhere. In the early 70's I was thinking of rebarreling to 6.5-06, but soon lost the urge. I too used to oogle at the Herter's catalog, and do remember those U-9 Mauser actions. I did end up with one of their extra beefy "U" single stage presses, which I still have. And those fancy wood stock blanks in the catalog in full color sure looked nice, too!

This is one of my favorite cartridges, and loaded to modern levels around 60,000 psi it has been phenomenal for me. I know it’s not very popular round in the states, and I’ve only used mine on deer but I believe it would be a fantastic elk cartridge for the guys hunting in thicker country. Right now I’m running 250 grain nosler accubonds at 2620-2650 fps. Also running 286 grain bullets around 2520 fps. I believe a video by you would do great justice to this extremely great old round.

I am a huge 7mm Rem Mag fan and I think Mr. Selby's dear friend, Mr. Bowman, got it right with what we need in a general big game round. A 160gr Nosler Accubond at 3100fps gives enough energy for elk and moose size game, enough velocity to expand the bullet properly and accuracy to as far as I need or want to shoot, around 600yds. And all with manageable and acceptable recoil. This is all done with around 65gr. powder, much more efficient than a 300 Win Mag shooting a 20gr heavier bullet with 10gr more powder to only get around 150 ft. lb. more energy at any given range with the same bullet design.

I'd love to hear Randy's take and knowledge on the 33's (0.338" diameter) when he gets the time. When I think about elk hunting, especially at longer distances. But really just elk hunting period, the first diameter that comes to mind is the 338. For some reason I just link the 338 with elk. Specifically the 338 magnums, be it the 338 Win Mag, the 340 Weatherby, 338 Lapua or the really big 338-378 Weatherby. I wonder what his experiences are with the Bigger diameter bullets, versus the smaller yet faster bullets and how that relates to killing effect in field. I haven't shot an elk far enough to really get a definitive answer. I've never taken a shot over 300yd on anything but paper.

I agree completely on the over drawn BC figures. BC changes drastically. I'll probably never leave my 300WM simply because it still outperforms all these new cartridges when you consider the right factors. I believe new PRC will thrive for awhile just like the WSM cartridges did and then fall to the way side. Infact the 270wsm still outperforms the PRC cartridges even running lower BC bullets simply because of velocity. The 140gr and 3300 eats up even this new 7mm.

The 7PRC will be popular with factory target shooters. It doesn't seem to be necessary for hunting. Seems to be some strange confusion between target and hunting cartridges. Different tools for different jobs.

  • @kylemartin832

    @kylemartin832

    Жыл бұрын

The confusion isn't cartridge related but bullet related. You have target and hunting bullets. The cartrage is irrelevant. The 7PRC is going to be a great hunting round for a few reasons. Suppressors are becoming more popular and with that, shorter barrels. The 7PRC is getting a 175gr to go 2925 out a 20". Also, an 8 twist barrel will stabilize 195gr bullet. That until recently has been 30 cal territory. The perfect do all hunting cartridge if you really think about it. Cheers 🍻

For low velocity at long range. A soft and accurate bullet is needed . The front half of a Nosler partition is soft. I have hand loaded a few Noser partitions but never got the accuracy out of them as I have had with Sierra and Nosler Ballistic tips. The greater the distances one shoots the greater the accuracy needed by the shooter and firearm. 400 yards is plenty far enough to shoot critters. I'd guess a minimum velocity of 1800 feet per second and minimum of 1800 ft pounds of energy for elk size game.

Point well taken about ethics and common sense… Even concerning bears finding the kill before you can recover it… I am with you on that… But… The number of elk in Wyoming has nearly doubled from approximately 65,000 in 1980 to just around 117,000 in 2021. There are currently 35 elk herds statewide with the largest being the Jackson herd. (Oct 13, 2022) Wyoming is home to around 600 bears. Some of these bears live in Yellowstone National Park, which is largely located in Wyoming. The grizzly population of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has gone from 136 bears in 1975 to an estimated 730 bears today. (Nov 4, 2022)

That may be in OTHER Parts of the state and even here they say elk are at or above objectives. Sadly, their objectives have dwindled greatly. In areas 55 and 56, the two areas covering our valley, North Fork of the Shoshone, the # of elk is, compared to pre-wolf era, down 80-90%, depending on the year. We know, we live and cover the back country. Using their own data obtained a few years ago, from 1998, when #'s started dwindling, up to 3 years ago, we'd had over 6,000 cumulative elk draw tags taken out of these two areas alone! That is criminal. And we've lost more draw tags since. And those griz, in YNP alone, by their observations, kill and eat up to over 90% of the elk calves in days. Our elk herds in this area, while looking better than they have for a long time, are still not here during elk season. The #'s they use are from data collected in Jan and Feb, away past the hunting season. But those elk, since they are migratory aren't here during the season. We are WELL aware of the "stats" you posted, but our living, breathing and covering this country for my life time and our youngest son's, who covers even more ground than I do, proves their propoganda does not hold water in these two areas. Thanks for watching.

They do have a couple in their catalog, but they are not being made. BTW, Partition bullets are scarcer than teeth on a worm. Seems like the only good hunting bullet one can find around here is a TTSX. It seems like if one wants good hunting ammo, he has to make it himself.
