The Debut' of Art Schlichter. Art Schlichter was possibly the most celebrated recruit in Ohio State Football History. His story is a long and tragic one. I am going to attempt to chronicle his career from 1978-1981. His High School teams at Miami Trace in Bloomingberg, OH went 30-0 in 1975, 1976 and 1977. 1978 as it turned out was the first year for scholarship limitations for NCAA Schools. Woody Hayes used to just offer any player in Ohio that he felt was worthy but now had to pick his spots and Art was a must have. Penn State, it was feared would land Schlichter because Joe Paterno had developed an offense more flexible to Art's strength, The Passing game. Woody had The Best returning running Quarterback in the nation in Rod Gerald and came under scrutiny in the press because they felt Schlichter would be handed the starting job. As you will see, all did not go well with this decision. I have no rights to this TV Broadcast. It was produced by TCS for Penn State.

Bill "the Amazin" Mazer VO for Westinghouse Ad. Several in production crew went on to long careers in sports TV. Except maybe the audio guy who snuck in at the end of the credits.

I like how the Rockwell commercial speaks of a futuristic GPS, in 1979.

Not a big Penn st fan but that 1978 team was loaded with talent. All-Americans Chuck Fusina at QB Keith Dorney at O tackle Matt Bahr as place kicker and on Defense two A-As at tackle Matt Millen and Bruce Clark and in the secondary Pete Harris! 11-0 regular season and ranked #1 but lost a classic defensive battle vs Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

The refs have certainly handled Penn State on behalf of Ohio State. 1995, 2003, 2012, 2014, 2021, 2023, all stolen from Penn State or marred by ridiculous officiating

Yikes! this game was a nightmare. Followed similar script to 80 UCLA game. Down 3-0 at halftime after missed opportunities then it gets out of hand in second half

Joe Pa got the better of Woody as Penn St gave OSU an ass kicking,it's clear the game of football even on the collegiate level, had passed Woody by the fiasco at the end of the Gator bowl at the end of this season was a convenient excuse to fire Hayes who was clearly just coasting on his rep by this point.

I always assumed Woody helped to land Art by telling him he would start immediately. Don't see any other reason to put him in this game against a top team. Probably would have been better to let him watch and play sporadically during that first season.
