If Doresy takes your recommendations and builds the trailer as a standard model, Doresy should call it the "Bailey" model.

Also, don’t forget that because the deck is lower than a standard flatbed, you are going to need longer straps to reach over those taller loads that are reaching the 13’6” height.

If you start hauling the step deck all the time, measure the top deck, and buy a 8 ft side tarp with a flap on front and back, that way it can double as a smoke tarp or as a regular small tarp, but knowing it will fit just the top deck is a big deal, I bet your going to Enjoy the stepdeck - climbing up on it is not a big deal, look and buy a smaller winch bar, there Handy, anyway - Good Luck - oh give Bailey a Extra Cookie, just because- lol, 🤠♥️🐾✝️🇺🇸🌲🐿️

As a old step deck guy there are sure pro's and con's. The ramps are really heavy when you're an old guy and using them as levelers is a royal pain in the butt! They also won't work for all loads and you usually don't find that out till you're loading. I agree on the tires as we had 17.5's on our Fontaine and they can be a bear to find on the road if you need one. They also like to peel the sidewalls without a lift axle. Tarping the lower deck is nice from the ground though! I'll be curious to see how long you keep it before you switch back.. 😁 Stay safe out there!

I have the lil chain thingys you pull up out of the floor, I really like them. I have mine every foot where as most guys I see have them every two, that’s an option you should ask them about, you’ll appreciate it later. I only haul coils and it really helps keep the chain close to the coil and keeps em tight. I use J-hooks on the inside chains and those on the outside for shotgun loading of course. Just have to keep them clean otherwise you’ll need to grab a baby screw driver to get them to pop up and just like a j-hook, if you don’t drop them all the way back down in the hole, stepping on them can cause you a shock of falling at first. 😂 Anyway, good luck I’m sure it’ll be a cool new adventure.

After many yrs pulling stepdecks I was satisfied with a 48 ft. If you've got a 53 some shippers will try to load more freight but not more money. And helps with some loading docks and parking. ( as you know your tractor is a little longer with the big sleeper) No sense sticking your nose out just to get it cut. If you know what I mean. Safe travels.

Hey Dan love the options you chose, a couple of thoughts i have are the boxes on step decks are smaller than what your used to on the flat, not sure you could get 4 boxes on with the ramps and sliding axle. Have you thought about getting a large cabinet for your headache rack also maybe doing cali air/electrical hook ups so that they are not in the way when carrying items from the headache rack to the trailer deck

I have this argument with myself, Step deck will get most loads lower, but that large tractor trailor gap will create poor mpg. Over in UK/EU we get that trailor as close as possible to the cab rear so air is forced up over the combo. We run with ABS and discs on ALL axles. You get to stop real quick but watch your load.

Met you at the show this year and last. I have a 48' mac flat and a 53' fontaine revolution spec'd almost exactly like your new one. Unless you have a particular use for the ramps, scratch them. I took mine off, as someone else stated, they are extra weight and not worth the trouble. It seemed to me the freight never paid well and everyone wants it rated as a partial. I don't mean to put anyone down that makes money with them but for general freight such as I see you do they just aren't worth having the extra worry of them being stolen or damaged. With that being said, I can't wait to see your step, mine is a 2016 and I may be interest in a Dorsey next.

Dan Dan the professional flat deck man. I can totally understand why you went with 22.5’s on the step deck. I have hauled RGN , flat and step and Mercer hauls regular type deck loads. Ya mini deck you can haul taller loads but that’s another world all together. If Mercer is not hauling mini deck loads already it would be a waste of time and money. As you know mini tires 17.5 wear out faster than a 22.5 so if you are not making the extra money no use getting the mini. Glad your getting a step deck. Thanks for posting Dan. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails to you and YAHOO a new step deck…..D..

Air disc brakes are already being used in trucks mainly in Europe, but their usage in US and India is less. With the large diameter of truck wheels, it is possible to design an effective drum brake with the required large diameter to meet the regulations on stopping distance. The cost of air disc brakes is significantly higher than that of drum brakes of comparable nominal performance.

That's what you want is 53 feet with sliding rear axle and you will probably want ramps Ramps give you more versatility with freight. Definitely want 22.5 rims. Voltage pins on the back of trailer. You can carry eight pieces of dunnage where the step deck starts. Definitely want winches on both sides. Extra cross members entire length of trailer. I have the 53 foot step deck with the things I listed above. It's a Mac trailer I believe the rub rail has more support than some. The trailer has served me well since 2016 I bought it new .

I had 17.5's on a 4 car trailer that I owned for 3 years and it was an issue finding replacements. Now, if you can find a good place to purchase them, buy a couple and keep them with you. They are harder to mount and dismount than 22's, but at least you wouldn't have to hunt for them on the road.. 22.5's do cure that issue completely so it makes sense.. It ultimately depends on your expected freight so I'm sure your Mercer guys are steering you right. As for tool boxes, guess we'll all find out...

In a year I only used the 2' extensions 2 or 3 times... but generally the 6' drops covered everything and are a lot lighter than the 8' drops and easier to manage on shorter loads... I don't think you will regret it. They are custom made usually, and cost me about $1,700 for the set. I know that is a lot, but what a better way to do it!

I've got to disagree with you on tire size. With a step deck, you want it to be no higher than 36 inches so you can legally haul 10foot 6 inch high loads. If you have a 42 inch deck height because of the 22.5 tires, you may as well not have a step deck. I'm saying this as a person who pulled a step and RGN for over 30 years. Thanks, Bill

@@billdougherty6494 By Dan changing trailers from a flat deck to a step deck it allows him to pull a wider variety of loads. By rule step decks freight pays more. But if you are in an area and Dan is empty and there is only loads available for step decks then he loads up and is out of there there. If he is in an area and there is not step deck loads and just loads for flat deck then he can throw that on his step deck. By having a step deck he can haul loads that have greater height but can still haul it on a step and still be legal which is 13’6. Plus with having ramps he can have vechiles drive up on his deck from the ground. A flat deck can’t load vechiles from the ground only a dock. So if there is 20 loads available and only 10 can fit on flat decks and all of the 20 loads can go on a step deck then which trailer would you haul, me I pick the step deck…

Congrat´s Dan. Will be nice to see the setup. How about light´s? Will you have lights for every foot? I hope so 🙂

U should run 3 bar winches instead of those slot winches, easier to use, I would put in some more J hook rails on ur deck, u can then tie product down 1/2 way across the deck, for LTL stuff I find this helpful. Even a J hook rail on the back and front of the trailer gives u more tie down options from front to back, better for equipment. U probably know this, but with a trailer over 48 ft u run into length requirements for king pin to rear axle measurements, CA being 40 ft and FL being 41 ft. And most other eastern and southern states having differences.

Trading in your existing trailer? Also, sounds like you will be hauling more wheeled / tracked equipment? Anyway, from a non truck driver, love your channel and your real world expertise Dan. Stay safe and take care out there! Have a good one.

Dan you might need 10 foot drop tarps for a step deck

One thing you’ll like about a step deck if you fall off at you’re close to the ground

I just wanted to add one more thing. If you run Michelin premium 11 17,5 tires on your step and watch your air pressure they will last just as long as 22.5. Bill

@@redeyedmongoose2963 Not only that, but if he gets a 48 foot, he will have overhand if he loads a 40 ft container and you cant haul them loaded with any overhang in most states. Most customers don't want to pay for overheight if it not 10 and 1 half foot tall, so why pull a want to be step deck? Bill

I meant overhang in above comment, not overhand. He's going to get a real education dragging those heavy assed ramps(most of the time for no extra charges). Bill

I think you're making a mistake Dan changing trailer! This one you now have has plenty of room...the step deck will restrict your weight allocation and will demand a longer radius to turn around...I like the trailer you have now and I wouldn't trade it...!
