    Couldn't you just lift it all the way to look at the second? This would work better on those locks that completely hide the pins from view by having you turn the key halfway around before you can even engage the pins. I feel like having pins that easily get stuck in the shear line is the key to making an unpickable lock. It's almost like you're picking a combination at that point, where each attempt is going to take you several minutes just to figure out it's been over set.

    Thanks for doing these videos, I watch both you and Bill regularly for the entertainment value more than any actual skill building. I know you two are professional aquaintances if not outright friends, and I think there are fans on both sides not understanding that. When I see you blow through a challenge lock it seems reasonable since I know that you have already seen Bill's attempts and are familiar with his style and methods. Effectively you have a huge leap ahead in knowing what won't work before you even pick it up. Why try to do what you've seen fail? I really want to see if Bill can crack some of his bucket now having seen your style and method differences, and I hope you two keep sharing because it makes for great viewing! Thank you.

    @@Adam-dt9tt Years for Bosnian Bill usually means 3-6 hours. He has a job and more than 1 lock a day to open and I can assure you that if LPL wasn't close to opening it within first 3 hours, he would have gave up that day. Maybe he would have done 2 days more maxing at 10 hours. 3 hours of lockpicking constantly is incredibly straining. Your vision is blurring, your hands aren't at 100% etc. I think he mentioned giving one of the locks that he hadn't managed to open 3 hours, during 3 days. So 1 hour a day. When you don't make progress it is frustrating. Also he watched Bill's video on this, so he probably knew what doesn't work. That's good 30-90% (depending on a lock and locksmith) of work done for you.

    I have no skill in lockpicking, and so I can't have a true appreciation for your delicate tension and ability to set pins. But your skill in analyzing these locks is wildly impressive. First the half-pick half-impression lock, then finding and picking those magnets, and now identifying this evil pin type...Just wow. Add in that puzzle lock your opened for good measure. You figure out _why_ you can't pick it with astounding deftness, and then the battle is over--you've already won.

  • @dimitardonev4507
    @dimitardonev45073 жыл бұрын

    Shaping the pins that way is so clever. So easy to overset which gives you false click that actually locks the cylinder and forces you to over release the tension in order to get that notch out which causes the rest of the pins to reset, basically you start over ever time you overset a pin. That is really smart.

    The Manhattan Project called, they need their drawing of "Little Boy" returned forthwith... Awesome explanation as always. My thrift store find of the day was a 1920's era F-S Hardware Co steel padlock for $2.50. Unfortunately no key!

    I'm not sure if you are referring to this, or not, but one of the big brains on the Manhattan Project (Feynman) passed the time in the campus by picking locks, and was actually asked to solve a problem with a filing cabinet (or safe... I can't recall, immediately). He wrote about it in one of his books... pretty entertaining!

    I've had an unnatural obsession with locks for decades. As such, I've gotten hours of enjoyment watching TLPL videos. I've come to the conclusion that there isn't any lock he can't outsmart. So... that sets me on a quest to design a safe that if I can keep him from opening it... then I'm absolutely certain nobody can. I'm thinking once I settle on a design, I'll make a prototype & ask to just send the door to see if he can defeat it. Of course, having access to the back, he could simply unscrew the cover to discover my "secret(s)" but I don't believe anyone here questions his integrity. I certainly don't. Until then I'll keep my fingers crossed that he accepts the challenge.

    This suggests an interesting strategy for making high security locks that might be worth it on computerized production lines. There’s no reason a manufacturer couldn’t make a library of say a dozen or so types of security pins and use them at random so that anyone picking the lock would not know what to expect just by knowing the type of lock.

    Very true. I haven't watched LPL for long, but I've been amazed at how little the manufacturers seem to care about getting feedback from lockpickers. If they cared at all, they'd already be doing what you suggest.

    I think one of the best safety features for a motorcycle disc lock would be to have the keyway perpendicular to the brake disc facing the ground. You can easily enough insert the key upward from below to open it, but lying on the ground next to someone’s parked motorcycle, with your head alongside the rear wheel, dinking around may provoke suspicious interest from others.

    Well pretty much all locksmiths/pickers will put Abloy Protecs on at least entrance doors. Good locks are expensive, so it tends to be a balance between cost and the cost of whta you're protecting
