The generation before used to have the film break in the cinema, the generation after, a 'not responding' app whilst watching a streaming site. Different technology, same annoyance.

The end credits that are rolling at the start of this video are from the film adaptation of Whitley Schrieber's "Communion". Saw it on S4C probably a couple of days after the C4 broadcast

Feels strange to see such an old styled character generator in 1996 when modern caption generators were already there for several years.

Because the character generator was at the local transmitters.

Yes. I believe these “blue screen of death” captions were automatically generated by the local transmitter site if it didn’t receive a signal and “thought” it should be. This screen had been updated around 1993 (to remove the reference to the IBA) but was evidently the same kit as before.

I think that the signal got lost somewhere after local distribution center and before the local transmission site.

No, the announcer mentions in the closedown that it affected the whole channel, across the UK, so the fault was at Channel 4 in London.

I find it amusing that there's a trailer for a showing of Goodfellas, followed shortly after for an advert for Miller beer that's clearly inspired by the scene from Goodfellas where some of the gangsters are introduced at the bar, to the point where I thought one of the actors was going to say "I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers" kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHhn25Zsk9zKlKw.htmlsi=Zw_TqWv_9ofi63lX
