I like Mark's take on Dele's interview, but I would just say that we need to be wary of hypotheticals. He said that if Dele was continuing to score goals, he would never have been interviewed and would continue harbouring the same trauma without it coming to light, but the reason he stopped scoring goals is (partially) to do with his trauma. So there isn't a reality where Mark's hypothetical situation of Dele continuing to score goals and perform at the highest level can come true. I agree with everything else he said about footballers needing more support from their clubs.

Strong point. I agree that it is difficult to continue as bad patterns come to a breaking point, but I have witnessed many people harbouring a trauma for many years. So the case is not impossible.

That Dele Alli interview was really tough to watch. I always had the impression that something was seriously wrong behind the scenes but to find that out that he had been molested at 6, smoking at 7 and dealing at 8 is just horrible Regardless of the future of his career, hopefully he keeps working on his mental health. You can acknowledge how poor Deli Ali’s performances have been since 2018, of course you can. What you absolutely can’t do now is pretend it’s down to a lack of character and/or feckless/immature behaviour. The degree of trauma he’s suffered makes his football career in its entirety to date, all the more astonishing.

Hmmm. Not sure Mark’s actually seen the interview. Dele talked about how he was evasive about his issues, hiding his habit, not able to accept help or open up until a few weeks ago. It sounded to me like people have tried to connect with him and help him, including his adopted family. He had friends challenging him on his behaviour and he wasn’t ready for any of it. And I don’t think anybody’s saying he hasn’t been bad for the last few seasons. I have so much respect for Dele coming out and saying all that. I’m imagining a scared little child growing up in an objectively awful situation. He’s basically been forced to do the interview so soon after his rehab and councilling to head off press stories. I hope he continues to get help and can find stability and happiness. Find Mark’s reaction a bit cold cynical and off-base, but to each their own. Yes we should look for lessons to learn, but this is not your average rich kid footballer going off the rails story. Maybe he just feels he needs to have a different take otherwise it’s not good content. 🤷

I hate to see Henderson go, and the value of a seasoned captain during a rebuild year is far far beyond his wages. Yet. Henderson is ready to transition to supersub, and he is not a Plan A starter anymore, based on his performances last season.

@@devanman7920 Obviously that is a significant amount of money to Henderson. But he is under contract with Liverpool. Liverpool greatly benefits from a seasoned captain during the first year of a major rebuild. To Liverpool he is worth far more than his wages. I think it is appropriate for Liverpool to demand a transfer fee, before allowing Hendo to go. A transfer with a player under contract is really a three way negotiation. (Some contracts have transfer clauses that simplify the transaction but I doubt Hendo has one.)

Money thrown at young kids who can't deal with the pressure of there given career and left just to deal with it until they inplod

We’re shifting out some dead wood. That’s a good thing. If someone came in and started bidding crazy amounts for the 💩 in the garage then that’s a good thing and we should embrace that for the clubs. It will make the league much stronger because they can then recycle great players back into the league. Until we start seeing Haaland or Alvarez, grealish and Saka go there then we can start being annoyed.

Saudi Arabia’s population is about 60% of England (36m) with the majority youth and football as the main and only national sports. You guys don’t know or underestimate how fanatic they are about their clubs. Huge rivalry. The only issue is the continental cup Asian UCL. They will soon be too strong and turn on dominance. They will have to, somehow, manage to join the European UCL. Then, they will be a formidable and attract the best players. KSA government is significantly behind this initiative and pushing it. They have actual wealth.

I'm not too worried, I think it will open up the door for more talent, more opportunities. As you said its the cycle of life. I do applaud them for creating a league, its ambitious and it will be interesting to see how competitive it is. I also think its excellent exposure for all cultures. Per the present offerings like Henderson's 700k pwr week, as rich as they are surely that isn't sustainable season after season. And I do have a question for players going to play in that league. Is it competitive enough that the players don't have to worry about being eligible to play for their country 🤔

Saudi Arabia aren’t exactly taking players that are ripping up Europeans top leagues. Most of them aren’t top targets for any clubs. I can’t see the league lasting more than 5 years because just having a single league competing with no continental cups just isn’t sustainable. You can’t buy prestige and competitive spirit

Agreed. Building "PSG in the dessert" at a higher price is not sustainable. It is money spent that cannot be recouped with commercial deals in the next ten years, which is effectively forever. At least if PSG ever won a CL or two, we would shrug and give them the benefit of the doubt for a few years. What is the plum that will establish the Saudi football brand as something worth real money.
