Great topic with good advice. In all the years I've kept fish i can truthfully say that african cichlids ( peacocks, haps and mbunas) i actually find really boring and no where near as aggressive as people let on. I kept what was supposed to be the most aggressive africans and they were nothing to brag about other than color. But i started with cichlids like umbee, dovi and tri macks

Cheers mate, yeah I must have had a bad run with them. All the Africans I’ve kept have been very aggressive.
I think the LFS sometimes has a bit to do with some of the bad fish selection decisions made by newbies. I knew of a case where a father took his son to their LFS to buy some algae eaters for his 60cm guppy tank and came home with 2 small plecos recommeded to him. You can imagine his shock when I told him how big they grew!
