7 ways F1 teams covered up tobacco advertising

Спорт

Ferrari and McLaren both changed branding on their cars for the Australian Grand Prix, due to complaints about their links to tobacco companies. That brought back memories of when several teams on the grid carried full-on tobacco sponsorship, and they would have to change their liveries when racing in countries where cigarette sponsorship was outlawed. In this video we take a look back at seven popular methods that were used by teams during this period.

Drinking in excess makes alcohol obviously bad for you, but there's nothing wrong with drinking responsibly. Cigarettes are cancerous no matter what. You're less likely to get lung cancer if you smoke infrequently, but there's no such thing as a "safe" amount of smoking.

@@pshontdag That is true to some degree, drinking over long periods is still shown to cause cancer. The jury is very much still out whether there is a safe amount of alcohol, especially since some studies show small amounts of alcohol, like red wine, can improve your health. Let's not beat around the bush, tobacco and alcohol as causes of cancer are not even remotely close. This is like the guy said above, nothing more than whataboutism. Sure, alcohol has been shown to cause cancer over long periods, but acting like they're equitable is misinformation at the very least. Just look at any statistics. For example in the UK, the top 6 preventable causes of cancer are 1. Tobacco 2. Obesity 3. UV Radiation 4. Occupational 5. Infections 6. Alcohol. That includes drinking in excess. Tobacco is ~15%, Alcohol is less than 5%. www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/risk/preventable-cancers#heading-Zero

You may be thinking alcohol is so harmful because of widespread deaths from alcohol poisoning. "Both binge and heavy drinking were most prevalent young adults (aged 18 to 25)." Alcohol for young adults can be especially dangerous, but that's not because the alcohol itself is harmful, that's more people just not drinking in responsible quantities. ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/content/profiles/alcoholicbeverageconsumption.pdf

My favorite tobacco rebranding was Jordan's "Buzzin Hornets" liveries, though I liked the large drivers' names as I could tell them apart more easily. As far as cigarettes, I've never smoked, but I love the advertising, particularly when it was associated with motorsports. The best tobacco liveries, in my opinion, were the McLaren red and white Marlboro cars (which was adopted by Penske's indy cars for several years as they also ran Marlboro sponsorship), McLaren's West silver and black, and of course the long running John Player black and gold, which has seen a revival on later Lotus and Haas F1 cars. NASCAR used to run a lot of tobacco sponsorship too (heck, the series was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds' Winston brand for over three decades) and I really enjoyed those too. To me, the outlawing of tobacco adverts is a reflection of a larger trend toward the increasing pussification of Western society; people are so easily offended and feel the need to tell everyone else how they know what's best for everyone and try to ram it down everyone's throats. I wonder how alcohol liveries are still legal on cars (both in F1 and in NASCAR) when drunk driving actually injures and kills people, but I'm sure the offended hordes of the Politically Correct Schutzstaffel will be along soon to 'fix' this too. None of us really need to be able to think for ourselves, do we?

I have never been a smoker but agree how so many racing cars look better with when they were sponsored by tobacco firms. I do find it funny how Lotus is associated with the JPS Black and Gold and Subaru are associated with Metallic Blue and Gold from their sponsorship with 555. My personal favourite Tobacco livery has to be Rothmans. Williams F1, Honda Moto GP, Porsche 956.

I'm going to hire two guys, one a Mr. Benson and the other Mr. Hedges to run an F1 team. I think the team name will be an amalgamation of the two. We'd better write it on the car in large letters so the fans know which team is racing! Also I certainly hope we can find a sponsor of some sort...otherwise the team might have to be sold to Mr. Marlboro. 🤔

2:58 - Williams started using 'Racing Team' in place of 'Rothmans Racing' in their livery as early as 1994. Incidentally, I love the idea of using 'Racing' in place of its tobacco sponsor. Back in 2014 in (I think) Abu Dhabi or Bahrain, Williams brought back the 'Racing' decals on the rear wing in place of its 'Martini' logo, because alcohol advertising was prohibited.

We're just too young to have seen what those guys were capable of. Most of the shady things ads do were invented by cig companies not to mention the constant need to advertise to children (since the adults are gonna die pretty quick using your product) it was just easier to band all advertising than try and out smart them in writing rules they will inevitably find a way around anyway.

Also, let's not forget about the legacv liveries some teams adopted in recent years, like Lotus most notably with their JPS-throwback or Williams when they were running a Rothmans look-alike livery in 2011. The first iteration of the McLaren livery of 2015 was also a lot like their West days (although one could argue the Vodafone sponsored one used to be pretty similar, too). Ferrari kept "Marlboro" in the name of the team as long as they could and not quite surprisingly both Scuderia Ferrari's and Ducati Corse's logo ended up looking like a half-chevron of the Marlboro logo.

On a related note, the Subaru World Rally Team did use what one called "alibi decals" i.e. the "( )))" brackets design when rallying in a country that had stringent tobacco rules. Not to mention that the censorship helped sidestep the licensing issues that would ensue with works such as video games and scale models.

I think rallying had even some better examples than F1. My personal favourite is that brand that wrote Racing on their race cars. They wrote Rallying on their rally cars, correct first letter, but also correct amount of letters and they looked excellent. As well Subaru had a modell called the Impreza 555 with registration plates "coincidentally" displaying the 555. But the funniest case I think was Per Eklund on the RAC Rally 1992. His yellow and blue Subaru had CAME1st written all over it, with the st in place and size to make the 1 look like an L. It looked so much like the real thing that the scrutineers informed him he wasn't allowed to start, to which Eklund asked: "Why should I not be allowed to state the fact that I came 1st in the Swedish Championship?" The scrutineers didn't have an answer to that and so Eklund and his "CAME1st car" was allowed to start!
