I gotta say, it's kinda cool how so many mistakes and malfunctions ended up making this into such iconic/ great movie.

The hokey shark is the only flaw. But, for 1975, they did the best they could. The movie, to me, rates a 99.8% perfect movie.

Bruce Forrest it's scary as hell. I was freaked and I wasn't anywhere near the ocean.

I'm so glad they actually managed to even make this film, it was very close to not being done at all... Spielberg was up most nights during filming writing or rewriting the script because when it came to begin filming it wasn't finished. turned out to be an awesome film

The fact that Robert Shaw didn't get an Oscar nom for this performance is a travesty.

He was one of my favorite actors. He was an absolutely awesome character actor.

I love this film, in my all time top 5. Ever since I saw it I fell in love with it and it started my fascination with Sharks. This is one film that should NEVER be remade or rebooted.

Jaws is my favorite movie and will always be.

If I may add one thing; because the avaibility of Bruce the shark was delayed they were forced to shoot the opening scene without it. And because of it the scene becomes even more terrifying. Not seeing the attacker adds to the fear experienced by the audience.

Yea it reminds me of GWTW when they had to start shooting before they found Vivian Leigh to play Scarlet. So they did that burning of Atlanta scene with a fill in and it was one of the movies greatest scenes.

Not true Im afraid. Bruce was never intended for any of the beach attack scenes. They went to schedule. They DID plan to use an electric winch for the first attack but Susan Backlinie preferred manpower as it was safer. Susan was never scheduled to appear with Bruce. Nor did she break any ribs etc. Much more of Bruce was intended to be used for the ocean hunt but not for the beach attacks. The shark was hidden by design.

Jaws is 40 years old! Damn I'm getting old. Never the less, the movie turned out great, and I still go swimming in the ocean.

Awesome episode people... Jaws set the standard for all movies that wanted to aim to be blockbusters. And kudos to Spielberg for his cinematic creativity during a very difficult shoot! 😎

Another thing is that when the Orca was sinking, a sound guy shouted out "F**k the actors save the sound department!!"

Even though I already knew these 7 facts about the film (I've been a huge Jaws fangirl since I was 5 y.o.--I'm 23 now), I still loved this video, and found it very entertaining--especially number 7!! How great would it have been to be that PA and get to go out drinking with the legendary Robert Shaw?! What a treat! 😄 Even if that PA was fired for his actions, what a great story he has!

They also forgot to add that the guy that plays En Gardner was a local and was also hired for 2 reasons: get a fisherman to play a fisherman and drink with Shaw. Also I didn’t like that they only attributed Shaw as the writer of the USS Indianapolis speech. Carl Gottlieb, Roy Schneider, John Millius, and Steven Spielberg also help write it.

so being a super fan, you obviously know that Shaw did not write his own monologue. That bit is incorrect. He edited it to some degree for brevity, but he did not write it.

to me Jaws is timeless. Even without cell phones, cgi, etc I think it still holds up. I'm so thankful for no remake. I enjoyed all 4 jaws films, with the first 2 being my fave. 3rd, I felt was for money and trying to keep it going. 4 I felt was just to wrap it up and closure.

Bleeping curse words in Jaws is blasphemy.

Shaw's first take of the Indianapolis speech, he was drunk and he did it horribly. He thought he could do it after a few because in the scene, they were all drinking. Mortified, he called Spielberg and asked for another chance. The next day, he did it on the first try. If that scene doesn't give you goose bumps...you have no soul. It's horrifying to think that actually happened.

Yeah, the shark populations, especially the Great Whites, were devastated after this movie. Every pathetic nut with a boat went shark hunting to score ego points from the immature public. Something like 70% of Great Whites were killed for fun, etc. No apology from Spielberg or actors about this. Now they're killed for their fins for soup for rich, uncaring snobs. Alex in Montana

2:17 NO! The reason they shot it at Martha's Vineyard was because the ocean floor was consistently 30 feet deep, allowing the "Shark Platform" to work.

"the location they found where if they were far enough out from shore, he could turn the camera in any direction and not see land". That would be true anywhere in the ocean two miles out. You're missing a key part of the equation- the shallows around Martha's Vineyard extend out far enough into the ocean that they could put the tracks for the shark on the ocean floor AND not see land.

Minor correction: Quint harpooning barrels to the shark is something that happens in the book, but in the book the barrels are made of wood.

That's true. As it was explained in this video clip, most of the "presence" of the shark was unseen. We all knew the shark was nearby. It worked well because of good acting and fast editing that put the fear in us.

My girlfriend and I are both BIG movie fans, an Jaws is her favorite movie so we've seen enough behind the scenes information to boarder on the point of actually being researchers on the topic, and I still don't know a couple of things in list. Whatever nerds you have locked in a dark room somewhere that are coming up with this stuff may actually be magicians. That said... The Shaw stories isn't 100% accurate, or at its contested by other sources. The stuff I've seen/read before is that Shaw convinced Spielberg that he should "have a few drinks" before the USS Indianapolis speech to be more authentic, but the guy was such a well seasoned whiskeyman thatn in about 45 minutes time he managed to kill an entire 1/5th of scotch before anyone could stop him and that the footage was "completely unusable". The next day he came in stone sober and nailed it on the first take. Whether some of the original footage was included or not is a plausible situation and seems reasonable to me, but Shaw didn't just show up hammered on _that particular day_, he actually got permission first. You guys also missed a trick by not mentioning the cameraman or director of photography screaming "F*ck the boat! Save the cameras!" when the Orca started to go down and literally throwing them to personnel on another boat... haha :) (Roy Schneider tells this story in some interview "somewhere"... Can't remember which one... It's the same documentary where Dreyfus talks about banging half the young women in the entire town during filming). So... My Jaws nerdgasm aside, excellent video, folks.

He said that filming a "big" Hollywood movie in a small town in the middle of a hot summer brought in groupies is from the entire east coast and he wasn't shy about taking advantage of that situation. His claimed that young women were basically throwing themselves at him and the combination of his part being somewhat limited and all of the delays because of the mechanical shark gave him plenty of time to party.

It's also worth mentioning that when he told the story he was about as gentlemanly as possible. It didn't come off like bragging or anything. He just found himself in the situation of having an usually enjoyable summer.

Thank you for reminding movie goers of the challenges of special effects before CGI. The fortitude of the directors and writers and the sometimes doubtful support of producers brought us som true cinematic gems.

@@Scoldy_ There are 9 kills (the two photographers, the women in the boat, the killer whale, Eddie, Marge, the pilot of the helicopter and the shark) while there's 8 in the first Jaws (Chrissie Watkins, the dog on the beach, Alex Kintner, Ben Gardner, the guy on the boat, the tiger shark, Quint and the shark). There are more deaths in the sequel than in the original.

Well me and most others wouldn’t count animals or anything not human. So seven kills (I always forget about the two in the beginning because not much is shown). Also, the first didn’t need a lot of kills, it was great with a small body count. The only really important death was Quint. Jaws 2 also does well like that, but because of its sequel status most would want more kills. My opinion still stands though, I like Jaws 2, a lot. Personal opinion, the shark in Jaws 2 has my favorite shark death, the original is awesome but I love how gruesome and out there the 2nd is, it shows a lot of destruction. (one of the only times electrocution in horror movies was done well in my opinion)
