'Nano' has taught me is that not every tank has to have a fish in it for me to Love it! All this time, I thought I was a 'Pet fish hobbiest', but now, as I enjoy my 'Topfin' 5.5 gal Pumpkin shrimp tank & the Blue Ramshorn Shallow 7 gal, I ask myself, 'Who ARE you??!' LOL!

I would say my biggest lesson with the small tanks is its good to go with slow growing plants. The best things about anubias, Java ferns, and bucephalandras are they are slow growing and you don't have to worry about them quickly growing out of control like so many other plants do.

Ended up researching everything about every aquatic plant, ponds and water parameters…. Now I have an outdoor 20 gallon whisky planter pond, 40 gallon stock tank pond, a 5 gallon tank inside and looking for another tank because my 6 guppies turned into 9, 876,353 guppies 😅🙃

The most irritating thing about one of my nano tanks is that the filter pump cannot be removed.... impossible to clean the impeller and it eventually stopped working. Removable pump is now a must have on my list for any tank with a built-in filter. So for that reason I'd avoid the TopFin Retreat tanks. I have a 6 gallon Fluval Edge, it's got a small opening which is a challenge for maintenance and catching fish, but it is beautiful and the AquaClear filter is very durable.

On the subject of tank size for bettas ... I've kept bettas in 3g, 5.5g and 6g cylinder, but have settled on divided 10g as better for the bettas and easier to maintain (even though similar ratio of fish to water, they seem to be more stable). Because I often pick up "rescue bettas" from Craigslist etc, and always have a handful of them, it's a compromise size to allow me to keep more of them, though I'd really prefer to give each a 10g. Well, I was recently setting up a new (tho pre-loved) 30g tank. It has dark substrate and driftwood, dramatic stripy black and white stone, tons of green plants, including long long Val draped from one end of the tank to the other, with a bubble wall at one end. Stocking is green laser cories and trilineatus cories, and some shrimp. And an impulse purchase - a curious and lively white (cellophane?) betta. Not only do they all look stunning together with the aquascape, they also seem to be really loving life together. And oh man, the betta uses every inch of that tank! He investigates the shrimp when they show themselves, scours the Val at the top for food that gets stuck in the fronds. He patrols the perimeter and checks the crevices of the driftwood and rocks, and he even schools with the cories when they're glass surfing in the flow of the bubble wall! It's still pretty early days for that tank, and I am more than a little nervous about him going on a killing spree some day. 😬 But I have to admit, it is also making me re-think my standards on minimum tank size for bettas...

What an interesting betta! I currently have a female betta in a 10 gallon with 3 nerites and 5 amanos, but it’s my dream to get the UNS rimless 20 gallon and have a betta in there with some ember tetras and maybe otocinclus. My betta enjoys harassing the amanos. She nudges at them to get them to swim away just so she can chase them. Bettas are certainly in a league of their own when it comes to personality…

My favorite nano tank is the generic 1.3 gallon fish bowl I found randomly at Walmart. I keep it as a no filter/no tech planted tank, in my kitchen. Love it! I keep guppies, so for livestock I put newborns (5-8) in, let them grow for several weeks, then switch them out. The one thing I would add to your list is what plants are you using, if any, and are they good for growing out of the water? I added Java fern as I had a ton and it is too big for the bowl, and just looks awful. I will be switching it out soon, but gotta decide what to replace it with (Anubias? Creeping Jenny? Something else???)

Great video Joanna. I have 16 tanks. 2 are 10 gallons. I have mostly 5 gallons, 1. Two & a half grooms. And a waterfall tank which is 5.gallons. I do have these acrylic tanks by aqua culture. They are 6 1/2 gallon tens. They are my favorites. I hated the filter that came with them so I use on most of my tanks sponge filters or box filters and I have hang in backs on some. I enjoy the Nano tanks but I change and back twice a week. The 10 gallons also I clean twice a week. It’s work but I don’t mind doing it. Takes me about 4 hours or more a week which includes cleaning filters vacuuming and cleaning the glass inside and out. I have some plants but most are silk plants. Thanks for your video. I found it very helpful as always.

I absolutely adore your passion and I really feel you in this video. My least favorite size is 1.5 gallon. I've had fish jump out of it and they technically should have been happy but they didn't share my vision. Since childhood my imagination has died down and I've become more aware of the welfare of the fish. I now keep a 10 gallon as my quarantine tank and a 20 gallon as my nano tank. I eventually want both of my kids to learn about tanks and I believe 10 gallon would be the minimum size I would start them with because I realize fish have been happiest in that size minimum. Thanks for sharing your failures. I really enjoyed your video.

Fell into the trap of a tall tank, i think it's likely similar to yours (26 inches high) for my office shrimp tank since I have limited floor space. Never again! I love to adjust my scape and am always having to remove my driftwood and plants to cull shrimps (into another tank of course). If I had a do-over I'd find a shelving solution that would have fit in that space for 2-3 5-10gal ones instead. Maybe when we move 🤔

These are all such important things to consider! After watching another channel that recommended a specific glass tank to get during the pandemic, because it had strong glass that actually arrived intact. The other features were hidden behind a wall. This is the Marineland portrait glass LED aquarium kit. Honestly I haven’t put it together yet, but one major drawback is the height to width ratio. The width is 9.5” but the height is 14”. So aquascaping is difficult, and you need either a ton of substrate to to correct that height difference, or figure out something else. Joanna, I did try your suggestion regarding checking out pieces of wood with a regular 5 gallon (that was all they had in the store), and I thought it would work, but was way too short. Awful looking. I have tried a few other pieces, but it’s sitting in a back corner of a room completely unused. Bummer. ☹️

I bought a 24 gallon square. It has all the lines of a rimless, It seemed awesome. It came with all the artificial media. The back houses all of the equipment. It was sold as a salt water tank. The lights are very, very bright. The thing is I feel jipped because with the enclosed housing it might be a 18 gallons for display and fish. Plus it is wonky. At first the sponge would get clogged up and then if you werent home you ran the risk of the tank over flowing. It seems to have settled now 9 months later. but i just never feel safe. Like it might over flow. Also those lights I have had to adjust and move up. I have had battles with hair algae. It has turned out to be lot of maintenance. I still love the shape of the tank, still trying to make it right. But if I had a redo I would just buy a basic 20 long with a back pack or sponge filter.

20 Long is a nano tank ? Can my son and I get that statement notarized ? My son just upgraded his overstocked 10 gallon multi. tank to a 20 Long. Mom was horrified by the “huge, oversized tank that was way too big !” That said, as a Father re-experiencing the hobby through his son, I’d avoid tanks less than 2.5 gallons even with nano fish. For other fish, I’d save and get the larger tank for the space first. Furthermore I would advise going slow and enjoying the scape and cycle. Enjoy the nano journey and the mega benefits, Jim

I love nano tanks, but from experience a 5g is as small as I go these days just due to water fluctuations and how hard smaller tanks are to keep stable. Just dropping a leaf into a tiny nano can totally shift the ph really fast and kill off everything in the tank. A planted 5g is more forgiving and the stocking options are much more versatile. 👍❤👍

I made some pretty nice neat dividers using egg crate covered with black plastic canvas (for cross stitching), using black zip ties to put it all together. Quite labour intensive! And tricky to get the measurements just right, but if you do, pretty nice and stable in the tank because it's solid, not flimsy. Interesting note, both of them have ended up with some moss growing on the side. If it gets extensive enough, I suppose I'll need to make sure both sides are separately filtered. (One of the tanks has small sponge filters on both sides of the divider, but the other tank has a filter on one side, with the output directed at the divider to make sure of waterflow on both sides.)

When you said the first question I said my first question is: can whatever I’m putting it on hold the weight? It’s not just the weight, it’s the weight per square inch basically, and even if something is rated to hold that much total weight, can it take all of that weight in one tiny area? Will the structure still be stable or will it get top heavy? I have a handicapped son that pulls and leans on everything, so this applies to all furniture, even if it doesn’t hold a tank for me; I can’t have it tipped over and hurting anyone

More great insight! As you probably know, I don't do nano tanks necessarily, but I do have a rimless 14 gallon that I that I wouldn't mind collaborating with you on if you have the time. I'm not talking a dual screen Live thing, I'm just saying maybe you can let me pick your brain to see what kind of substrates, plants and what-not work best in conjunction with the Father Fiah method. What I currently have going on is certainly not working.

I am in a love hate relationship with my 5 gallon tall portrait tank. it started out fine. i ended up modifying EVERYTHING. because the filter broke and the lighting just wasn't enough. I dont regret the buy but it was a large expense for something so small. How do you stop yourself from getting more tanks later on? I'm getting addicted!! (used to have loads of tanks until I moved)

Great topic. I would never get anything smaller than a 5 gallon or less again. Water does foul quickly even w weekly water changes and required me to test twice a week. 5’s were difficult for to get my hand in to service too. So limited for scaping and inhabitants.

What you could have done with the 15gallon tall is 5 gallons worth of glass cut off. Then you are left with a 10 gallon and with the other all you would need to do is cut a bottom to size then you have a 5 gallon 😊

I love nano tanks, but it's a shame most of them come in cube sizes, which just isn't the right footprint for me or the fish i like. I find it difficult to find nice looking nano tanks of the suitable dimensions - landscape, not too deep & semi-tall with opti-white glass.

For us its anything smaller than a 3.5 that we don't like. We just are not good enough to manage them. Can't even keep a snail alive in them, with doing everything like we should. Can't even keep a snail in a 3.5 with our kids bettas lol. Bettas do great, but snails don't last. We know it is us and managing that small of a tank. We have 3-3.5 gallons, each with a betta and they are all doing great. General is over a year old (he is our rose tail). We just cannot manage snails in anything smaller than a 5 gallon, just not skilled enough, lol. So it makes me not like anything smaller than a 3.5 lol....we tried and failed miserably.

8_ when you consider buying a nano tank think what you have at home, a toddler, a kid or a pet especially big dogs because these creatures are curious and they stick their hand literally to every thing😂 or try to reach the tank and accidentally pull down the tank 😱😱

bull, depending on how much hardscape takes up the tank determines whether it's a nano tank. on average, 2.5-7 gallons is considered a true nano. But once again, how much hardscape you use can take up room and provide less swimming space and surface area.
