Lived in France, Spain and in the 50's, and got there on ocean liners. All way cool. loved it. Today, that world is gone! Everyone's loss, but at least I have the memories.

I'm young. I was born in iceland, and I mourn the loss of our cultural heritage. Not only our ancient traditions that got wiped out by christianity, but the commercialization of things considered "icelandic". You can buy keychains with pictures of puffins, hallgrímskirkja (the large church), old gods and runes which now makes them nothing but accessories you wear to tell people you've been to iceland. We mimick the culture of america with none to call our own. Many young people even speak english between one another. Not to mention, our popular music is just as bad or worse than american pop music.

@@pretz5584 Lol Our particular brand of paganism was very peaceful. It had no authoritarian edicts about how to live your life and was tolerant of people of other religions, not like the "join our religion or die" brand of christianity that replaced it. Feminism in our country can be irritating, but the degeneration of our culture lies more with tourism and american media. Also fuck Denmark.

I have been living in Iceland for 12 years now and have been working in the tourist industry for 10 years. Just wanted to bring up another angle to your point about tour guides: I used to think the only way to see a country was on your own with a guide book- in Iceland nothing could be further from the truth. All the guide books are written by foreigners who spend a limited amount of time here so their take on Iceland is quite limited. I took a south coast tour with one of the big tour companies a few years ago, and let me tell you, the local driver/guide talked a blue streak and I learned soooooo much more from him than from any guide book! The locals have all the inside information I totally recommend tour guides in Iceland! Also, guide books get out of date really quickly as with the increase in tourism, everything changes from one year to the next. You can still rent a car but do take at least one tour! Especially in winter- there is only 3.5 hours of daylight and you don't want to be driving in icy/windy/dark conditions and get stuck out in the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter. Even the Golden circle is pretty deserted in winter, so don't chance it!
I live in Iceland, and the waterfalls are really clean. You can drink from them without any harm to you.

So - let's review: 1) DO TIP - it is never expected but always greatly appreciated. There is no law against tipping and you are free to express your gratitude for services rendered in any way that is comfortable to you. This urban legend about "no tipping" has to come to some sensible end. 2) DO Drink tap water (cold water) anywhere on the island, you got that one right. If it is in the tap it is clean and safe to drink. Do not - ever - do what you see the young man doing at Solheim glacier. He is drinking melt water from the glacier and it is definitely NOT clean. 3) Do tours. Driving in Iceland is only for the experienced and doing day tours to the most popular destinations will familiarize you with the roads, the traffic and the traffic laws. As of April 19. (good Friday) we have not had a single death on the roads this year ('19) but we were up in the 35-40 pr. year range not so long ago. The tourism brought us 250.000 visitors in 2008 and that number increased to 2.500.000 in 2018. More visitor=more cars on the roads. 7-8 of every ten lives lost were visitors in rentals. Doing tours will let you see the most striking waterfalls and volcanoes in the safe care of an experienced driver/guide who will also tell you the history of the area and throw in a tale or two of vikings and elves and trolls. 4) Don't speed. You got that right. But also you MUST turn on your headlights fully at all times. Driving with automatic lights is an offense and carries a Kr.20.000 fine. Also you must wear your seat belt fastened at all times (while driving) and you must never talk on you phone without hands free apparatus. There is only 1 highway in Iceland, highway number one, and the speed limit is km90 on it. Elsewhere the limit might be km80 (on lesser roads and if you are towing anything) km50 in the city and villages and km30 in residential areas. 5) No comment - you are absolutely right on that one. 6) No comment - again you are right. 7) :-) :-) :-) Wonderful video - but as useful as your suggestions are you got some askew and two completely wrong. I wouldn't mind if not for the fact that we - the locals - lose money on such misinformation and we are the ones left to clean up the mess. Best regards - Howser - professional tourguide - Iceland :-)

In 2013, we stopped at Reykjavik, Iceland for a day, on a Trans Atlantic cruise from England to New York, USA! After viewing the very enjoyable, but quiet town, we went on a bus trip, into the back country, to see geysers, a 'haunted' area & a bridge, which supposedly connects the two tectonic plates,i.e. Europe to America! We saw the "Blue Lagoon", but didn't go in. Wonderful experience!

I was lucky enough to go to the Blue Lagoon in 1997 when it was small, further down the road and the changing rooms were fairly basic. I was there with my kids and there weren't many people there. All good tips. I was there in July. Also, don’t shower with your bathing suit on before going into public pools. Gotta put in on after. Heated community pools are ubiquitous, glorious, and much cheaper than Blue Lagoon.
I went to Blue Lagoon when they first opened in the morning this past December, not a soul there for a good hour or so and it was totally worth it. By the time we headed out around 11 or so it was packed
The *MINIMUM* fine for speeding is about $100 but can reach up to $2000, depending of the speed when caught.
Great vid, thanks for the advice. Bonus it is. (Careful about drinking the water, however. Remember there are over 130 frozen water-borne diseases. Many of these will make one instantly ill, others will have an after-having-exited-Iceland incubation period. Those future patients will remember Iceland differently. You should recommend a hand-filter, at least, for non treated water. And, boiling out-door water for 10 minutes will make a more memorable visit.)

Very good advice. The Blue Lagoon is a total tourist trap, 10-11 should be avoided but the fines for speeding can be much higher.
Nice video!
Local Icelander here. Regarding the don't speed tip. It stands completely true. The fines have recently been increased (trippled or something along that) so that's expensive. I just want to add though that most tourists probably don't realise that driving in Iceland is much more complicated than driving in say, america or denmark. During the summer there are a lot of wild animals crossing the road, even on the mountain paths. During the winter, the roads get terribly icey or snowey. There has been a massive increase in road accident related deaths here the past 5 years and the victims are more or less tourists. Keep your safety in mind and take it slow, it's always worth it.

1. tipping we don't do, people can get offended by it. 2. True 3. Agreed 4. Roads are horrible, and Also tourists are the worst encounters on the road. 5. 10/11 is a complete rip off 6. Blue Lagoon is also a rip off another one cheaper in the North east "Jarðböðin - Mývatn" 7. Parties on Friday/Saturdays some times thursdays.
This is pretty much spot on. The only other thing I would add is to NOT IGNORE WARNING SIGNS. Saw people doing dumb things and getting stuck off road, etc. People also talk about how expensive it is, but if you play your cards right, it's no worse than NYC or Boston. Alcohol is the worst, so make sure to hit the "happy hours" and you are permitted to bring 1 litre of alcohol (per person) in your checked bag into the country. And opt for Airbnb- much less that a hotel, and we saw the Northern Lights from the one we stayed in near Vík. Traveling with a group will also cut down on costs, especially with car rentals, accomodations, etc.

NYC & Boston are VERY expensive so not a good argument. Nonetheless Iceland is a really cool country.
So I had to check it out based on the title of what NOT to do - first it's funny because I was there in Iceland when you published this! (Mar 2-9) I'm watching, thinking it's some disgruntled person's perspective or something like that, but I actually thought they were great tips and agreed with most of them! We learned from the Icelanders not to tip by day 2, so that's true. The tip on touring is a good one, but depends on the traveler. If you're comfortable finding your way in a foreign location, tours get you to hot spots easily and sometimes have places you hadn't considered. Otherwise I fully agree - I rented a car for the trip and wished we just went on our own. I took my drone on the tour and that's what killed me - the tour is limited on time so it's hard to get a good flight in before the bus pulls off. The Blue Lagoon was nice, but you're right that it can get crowded. It can be expensive, but a nice experience. Thanks for sharing.
*Blue Lagoon is great thing to watch ... Though very expressive*
Last year my husband and I went to Iceland. Blue Lagoon was 2 days before the flight home. Honestly, I think visiting it once is worth it. Plus we were lucky because we came in the morning and there weren't too many people. We enjoyed it properly, to be honest. Next time we visit Iceland we'll go to places we haven't seen it and less touristy!
Thanks for wonderfull viedeo
I visited Iceland in mid-October 2019 and would tell anyone to visit then. The exotic countryside is covered with colorful Autumn foliage and some snow on the mountaintops, it isn't too cold yet, it doesn't get dark until 8 PM, much lower prices and fewer tourists...AND you might get to see the Northern Lights, but that requires planning and camping out with a camera tripod. Rent a car instead of doing the bus tour of the Golden Circle as half of the stops aren't that interesting compared to Gulfoss and the ones South. I would suggest to drive straight to Strokkur geyser and then see the largest waterfall Gullfoss. Then head South to the coast to see Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui waterfalls. Then head on to Skogafoss and on to Vik to see Reynisfjara Beach (Black sands beach and volcanic bismuth hex column formations.) I've seen and flown in many WWII aircraft so seeing the wreck isn't interesting and it will take up a lot of your time. If your visit is limited in Iceland explore the South East first and leave going North if you have time. Also, definitely see the Northern Lights movie at Perlan - Wonders of Iceland museum. Split a bowl of IMO the best lamb stew with a friend at Cake Loki as it's huge, get the open face pickled herring sandwiches on rye bread and def the carmel ice cream with rye bits. Enjoy the ocean view at Grotta Island Lighthouse. I wouldn't go to Blue Lagoon again if I visit Iceland but it makes everyone jealous when they see the photos of you. (Buy before you fly there) It's $90 for two hours and your skin will become soggy by then. Don't put the salt on your face as your skin will be dry and look aged for the next two days.

Autumn is usually a great time to visit any heavily tourist area. I was thinking that about Iceland before I read your post. Early to mid October - rent a car and strike out on my own.
Thanks for this video - hoping to go to Iceland IN Feb for my 50th birthday (I expect there will be a lot of snow that time of year)!
Good one
A few other tips as someone's who been to Iceland quite a few times. When you travel there make sure you have all your toiletries and don't buy them there. I had my luggage lost and it came a couple days later when I was on a longer trip there. I had to buy toothbrush, makeup, hair stuff, razors and it was shockingly expensive as a Canadian, what would be a dollar store comb in Canada was like $15 there. Keep all this kind of stuff in your carry-on. If you're from North America be wary of the burgers, Icelanders have the stomach to digest them but North Americans 8/10 times will get the runs. Iceland isn't really known for its beef, stick to seafood, lamb, chicken, whale if you dare. When it comes to partying you have to go out after 12:30 and don't expect typical dance clubs, there's only a couple that would be considered dance clubs and there's never cover and they don't allow their clubs to get as packed as in a place like Toronto. You could be waiting in line to get in and then when you finally do, it feels like it's at half capacity and then you realize why... Icelanders seem to need alot of personal space for their dance moves. The men and women will forcibly shove you to get past, they're not trying to be rude it's just their culture. Also if you're a woman and you're looking for some love, you have to approach the men because they will just batt their eyelashes at you and hope you approach them, it's a very noticeable gender role reversal. Also if you're partying downtown you should be staying downtown because it's impossible to get a cab at the end of the night on Sat/Sun.
Very good
Just got back from Iceland. Here's a few tip. NEVER. DO. TOURS. My girlfriend and I rented a jeep cherokee and traveled everywhere in the comfort of our own presence. We stopped whenever we wanted too and did whatever we wanted too. The tours are way too expensive and the real magic happens when you actually drive out the tourist spots. Yeah we did visit some tourist attractions but we didn't feel rushed due to the limited time they offer. There was even a time where we were driving and heard about seals being there so we stopped somewhere where a youtuber said seals are normally are and took pictures of them by the beach while no tourist could be seen. Renting a 4x4 is by far your best option. The diesel engine makes gas consumption very slow and car rental for a week is way cheaper than doing one tour a day. We rented through Greem Motion which has the cheapest but reliable 4x4. Also you are incharge of your time. Check out my IG: N7NE_ and see our post and DM me for any questions and recommendations, my girlfriend and I will gladly help

What is the approximate mileage for a gallon of diesel and what is the cost?
just returned from Iceland. I don't know what's going on, but the campgrounds were nearly empty as was the blue lagoon Definitely don't be afraid to go because of overcrowding.Did the collapse of WOW cause this? Fabulous country! I will absolutely return there.
We were given two square bottles of water when we boarded Icelandair...they were the only bottles we used for water our entire time around the Golden Circle. Water, water everywhere...all of if to drink.
The water you filled on your bottle by the glacier is a glacier water but you also find a very good and clean water in rivers coming from springs, like the water at Skogarfoss waterfall and Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
Blue Lagoon was a great experiance - i would recommend this. They have different time slots, we took a latter one in the evening, this time last year....
Very nice video, as a person that lives in Iceland I think this list is fantastic for tourists or visitors :) If i would add additional things , please note that some of the rental cars are stick shift. Some tourist don't know this and many rental cars need to be fixed because of the fact they just have them on the highest gear. We don't fault people for this but I just wanted to warn people so they don't get a huge fine on their vacation.
Nice list bro. Going to visit in April 2020 and was searching for something like this. Didnt mention the insane gas prices tho.
Beautiful, beautiful and beautiful
If this video would be made by a local it would be so different

Vitez it recommended it to me 6 months after I went to iceland😂
Susan and I were there in 2019. We flew over it while going from Barcelona to the US. We had to go back for a closer look. We only had three days so we did take the tour (ring road). If they ever let us back into Europe, we have returned to our usual routing of rentin an apartment for 6 to 8 weeeks. Florence is next.
Water streams are also perfectly safe to drink and sometimes more refreshing than tap water
I'm from Iceland and i love it there!

I am from USA and love it. As all other citizens that love their country.
Bonus in iceland was a lifesaver for snacks and groceries while I visited
Quality advice regarding 10/11. It's very expensive and often situated near tourist hot spots for a reason. Bónus and Nettó are the low cost option. Hagkaup isn't terrible either.
Youre kinda right about this and i should know im from iceland
7 honest advice ... make perfect sense !
Ahora va hacer un año que estuvimos con mi familia , nos encantó un viaje precioso , con ganas de volver

Iceland doesn't look like another planet. Iceland looks like Iceland.
Taking a tour is the easiest way to see the country. And plus taking a tour can get you to cool places that you could potentially not find while just driving around.
One of our local 10/11s recently got renamed to Krambúðinn, and it's basically the same as it was before.
I agree with all the things you mentioned and to add a little to the topic Don't go off-roading where it is not allowed And respect all wether warnings. Traveling on mountain or a glacier can be so dangerous if the weather is bad
If you want to party in Iceland, you have to wait until 1am to go - nobody goes downtown before midnight 👻 (and usually only on fridays and saturdays)
Just booked a ticket!
