I’m a 72 year old who kept cutting my short dark brown hair myself, during the pandemic until it was all white. I’m a “winter” so I’m usually wearing black, white, greys, blues or pinks. People ask me why I don’t wear beiges or oranges. I joke that I am allergic! Strangers tell me that they love my hair but I’m still not used to it! I agree with everything you said. I will not wear heels or any shoe that hurts. If I am uncomfortable in clothes that I try on, I don’t buy them. I have never bought vintage, but that’s something I might try. I just discovered you this month, January 2023. I used to be a makeup artist for Lancôme in Canada until I was replaced by girls in their 20s. I went back to college at 60 and became a family addiction councillor. Big change. Thanks for your videos!

@@sheilah9720 Sheila, there are others out there that are experiencing and have experienced the same sadness. Try to find someone who has been able to successfully cope with the sadness. But don’t stay around the ‘poor me’ people. My sadness was betrayal and divorce. I went to ‘divorce recovery’ groups. There are ‘grief’ groups out there. Find one that works for you. Stay there only as long as you are getting positive help. Maybe one through the internet. I do envy you in that you had someone who loved you. His love and memories are still with you. You don’t have to leave him behind. He still has a place with you in your future. God bless you.

Huh! I went to college in my 30's and felt like a huge misfit. The teachers treated me different too. Some treated me like a child. But good for you! That was a big change. How do you like counseling people that never get better? What's a family addiction? They're all on drugs?

Good on you! Of all the jobs I’ve had, getting my LMSW to practice therapy was by far among one of the best moves move I’ve ever made. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
I stopped buying magazines when I was in college. Being a poor college student that was a fashion merchandising major, I had purchased a "special" issue of Vogue for class. Leafing through the magazine I realised that there were 7 articles and the remainder was advertisements. I was stunned to realise that I paid so much money to look at clothing, makeup and jewelry that I couldn't afford.

I stopped buying fashion magazines in my 30's, when I realized how bad I felt about myself after reading them. The unattainable goal of 'perfection' created a very unhealthy feeling of inadequacy, so I stopped and never regretted it.

I donated mine to hospitals. And I wore a coral shirt to work & received so many compliments. Now seeing it on your video, I see the beauty of that colour.
Less clutter ,minimal wardrobe & makeup! Less is definitely more, more space, more clarity and calm! Principles of Feng Shui thank you 🙏🏻🧡
I also shop for clothes exclusively at a local thrift store. My "big ticket items" now cost me $10. I occasionally find comfortable, never worn shoes for that price as well. The thrift store's mission is to assist those who need jobs or have experienced a devastating event (loss of home due to fire) so it's a win-win for me and for our community.

Same. Thrift stores spoiled me though. I go to a regular retail store or online store and am just aghast at what they're charging for their clothing when I'm used to paying $7 or less for clothing.

Once in a while this works for me. Turtles and tees are always new for me but jeans are optional. Ironically the best quality and variety of dresses is often thrift. Sweaters, plaid shirts, and never used work out gear, leather shirts and denim coats also are thrift. Full weather coats are new, always. I get treated better by people who have issues with class system and they are also pretty and functional. I buy most shoes new but have some antique classics that I wear always going out that I got from antique stores. It’s cool to be able to wear the real thing in comfort when the fashion is a knock off romantic nostalgia but not the quality and longevity. Rain boots and winter boots are optional. I live on the west coast and have dogs so that is necessary. I found the best pair of rain boots that lasted five years of constant abuse for $4. Laughed while people were walking around in their $200 Hunters with zero need for their function. Was I envious? A little because they are so tall that I could walk across spring creeks with them; and I have not met anyone who actually knows what they are so tall for. Sigh.

I started thrifting back in the early 80s when I was in college because the clothes I was seeing in magazines were only available in NY or LA. At the time the look was kind of retro, peddle pusher, horizontal stripes, etc. which were exactly the tings I was finding at the thrift store. I’d customize by changing out buttons, belts or hems. I can’t count the number of times I was stopped on the street by people asking where I got my clothes. I still shop at thrift stores almost exclusively.
I used to be a nurse working in a dermatology department at my local hospital, and over half our referrals were women who had sensitised their skin by using lots of different products at the same time.
I made a terrible mistake 2 years ago. I bought almost everything in two expensive skin care (and makeup) lines. I spent thousands and I couldn’t possibly use them all! So I learned that in skin care, makeup, clothes, magazines, less is more!! Thank you, Nikol, for reaffirming my lesson in spending money I could be saving for a consignment piece!! 😊❤

Just use up the skin care and consider it an indulgence then make better choices going forward. Don’t beat yourself up for it.
I've been loving a hoarder for 19 years. He calls me the throwaway queen (and a few other choice terms I won't mention here!) We finally agreed the best way to have a continuing relationship is to live close and visit often. We talk and text every day and see each other almost every day. But we cannot live together. And we've acknowledged this for the past 15 of those 19 years. I cherish my clean, uncluttered countertops and organized cupboards and drawers, while he cherishes his junk. You have to be very giving to sustain a relationship like this; he gives in and I give up!

Me too. Books are my love.
This video was so relatable. I used to try everything in my 20's and 30's that called my attention, I'm 45 now, and last year I finally got to the point where I knew what's working for me, I don't need to look for the next best thing, I've built up my wardrobe, my makeup collection, and skin care routine, I furnished my home, I don't need anything else, I only need to use up what I already own. I hurt one of my feet last week so I haven't been able to go back to work, but I've been using my time to simplify my home and life.🎉
Having curly hair, I'm a hair product junkie. My goal for 2022 was to pare down my hair products. I was successful...for a while. My goal for 2023 is to not give up and try again. I can do it! 😊

This is so recognizable. 😁 I one’s told my hairdresser I needed a walk-in closet for all my non working hair products. Especially the volume one’s. Its crazy. 🥹
Thanks for sharing, I've given up the same things as you. I'm 55, I started wearing heels when I was 15 and I mean high-heeled stilettos! I won't suffer the discomfort/damage to my feet anymore and now I find it a fun challenge to create an outfit wearing a 'comfortable' heel or flats. When my hair started to grey in my 40s, I let it, it's now mostly silver like yours and I get the most compliments. Minimalism is definitely the way and I think in most cases we learn this the older we get! 😀
Does anybody else remember "Color Me Beautiful"? That worked for me, & I was in my 20s. Had kind of gravitated towards those colors anyway. I'm an "autumn". Then I developed my style. No florals, not many patterns. I like my hair a certain way, so I don't fool around with it. Simple top/sweater with jeans, but I wear real jewelry. "Diamonds & denim" is my style. Been doing that for decades now.

I full have that book!
I only want to wear natural fabrics now, as I find them so much more comfortable. In a colder winter climate, a tissue-weight merino wool turtleneck is my go-to base layer. It moderates temperature fluctuations so well. In the summer, linen or cotton are it. With the occasional silk or cashmere piece thrown in, I'm good to go. So I try to buy less and wait for the really good quality pieces to go on sale. No more polyester!
Unrelated to this video, I just wanted to share with you that my daughter bought your cool based concealers for me as a Christmas gift. I have got to say that I absolutely LOVE them. Perfect colors, perfect consistency and perfect staying power. Thank you!
Hi Nikol, love your advice. Beauty doesn’t consist of only the tasks performed in front of the mirror. Our everyday living habits play a big role. I adore my husband and when we’re good, and our grown kids, work life and our home are all good, then I can feel great and have fun during my greying transition and selection of new colors of makeup and clothing! You rock Nikol!!!
I had a wall to wall bookcase full of books that I have read, love reading, love the feel of books, they have been my "friends" through difficult times when I can bury myself in a story. However I decided to down size to just two smaller book cases,it was traumatic letting go,took me a whole week to make decisions on which ones to keep. LOL

In the last 2.5 years I’ve done two culls and given away 100 books. It was such a difficult process and I was scared that I’d “need that book” after it was gone, but the reality is I haven’t needed them. I still love my books but I’m more deliberate and considered about which books I purchase to live in my home, and the rest I borrow from the library 😊

When it comes to sale items one strategy is to ask yourself if you would still want to buy it if it was very expensive - say $300. If your answer is ‘no way’ you probably don’t really love it and it’s just the feeling of grabbing a bargin that your loving.
Great message! I love how you speak your truth while many are afraid to admit the same thing!
Great video, great advice. These last two years I have been decluttering and streamlining my home/stuff! There are so many things that I don’t buy any more. Jewelry (wear my timeless real gold and silver, pearls), Socks and underwear in crazy colors… Just black and white now. No magazines, books, or CDs. I have my favorite cosmetics and skin care products and I don’t try the newest and latest anymore. Skirts, blazers, fancy bras, pantyhose, perfume, nail polish, high heels, soap (I make my own), fast fashion, synthetic clothes…😅 trying to make it simple!
I have done allot of the things you have. It is very relaxing to not have all this overwhelming stuff in my life. I actually started this in my 30’s & now at 63 I’m continuing.
feel like you and I have had this conversation before. I have always wanted to be a minimalist but never have succeeded. Finally at age 73 I have decided that it is time. I am now trying on every piece of clothing and if it doesn't feel comfortable, it goes to the donation pile. I started with magazines and books several years ago. My last items to pare is skincare and cosmetics. Thank you for this video.

This is one of my favorite videos!! I am so encouraged and motivated to continue down sizing. A few weeks ago I did eliminate skin care products I had. Great suggestions!!
I stopped buying the same things you did! One difference is I just recently started buying books occasionally because I love when I get into a long-term reading mood and I have a whole bookcase full of books I haven’t read yet to choose from. This is the most BRILLIANT video. I need to follow each and every one of your guidelines. Oh my goodness, I plan to watch this monthly to keep me on target. So well done!
Great video Nikol! I also found out I was not a pattern girl after several attempts seeing them on others that really looked great in them. I would enjoy seeing your current favorites in skincare that you continue to repurchase. Less truly is more although sometimes I keep having to remind myself that!💄❤

I'm currently using all the skin products I have so I can make an educated decision on what works for me; taking notes when I change so I can know the outcomes; of course if something doesn't work I will discard after a short trial period not when the bottle is done.
What a very sensible topic and I agree with everything you have said and actually having been doing most, will definitely clear out some more.
LOVE the new intro! Nikol, I can't say enough how much I resonate with you. Buying great, classic clothing on consignment, staying with a simple skin care, clothing & make up routine, & your overall positive attitude, is amazing! I can relate to hunting for quality vintage clothing, & these are the pieces that stay in my closet for years! The hunting to find them, sometimes for ridiculous prices, is so much fun, & they are more fun to wear! A good seamstress is a must, & these pieces are the most comfortable! There's something about you Nikol, that gives me, & I'm certain others, courage! You've given me the courage to grow out the gray, & stick with it (I caved & colored over it once, then started over!). Thank you for being you, the great encourager!
Hi Nikol - I can really relate to both #2 and #7. I am always buying items that go on sale and I never end up wearing them so I have stopped doing that now. Also the skin care products - I follow so many influencers and I keep buying based on their recommendations and you are so right - you end up being overwhelmed and furthermore you are not really giving the products a chance because I'm not even halfway done and I'm on to the next one. Thanks for these reminders 😊💕
I was at the airport the other day and picked up a Vogue at the newsstand. It cost 7.99! I couldn't believe it. I guess I haven't bought a magazine in awhile because I was in total sticker shock. I love your content, Nikol!♥️

This video is such a great motivator to organize and be more thoughtful about what to buy/keep!
Very astute commentary… love you telling us to pare down with cosmetics. …. And know your color palate is right on ! Thank you so much.
Great advice! I read continually, for both professional (teach literature) and personal reasons. I use physical for teaching and digital for personal. Kindle unlimited lets me borrow. It took me a month to figure out the skin care thing. I have some basic things in routine that really work. I did purchase an extremely expensive serum from Chanel that I now add a drop to each pump of their serum foundation because it soothes and hides the flakiness my very dry skin has from use of Adapalene at night and AHA & Vitamin C during the day.
Great, relevant video, Nikol. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this. I gave up magazines about 8 years ago and haven't looked back. I realized quickly that I was looking for inspiration and I was able to find it all around me. I think the skin care issue is one with which I still struggle. I've always loved my La Mer, but trying to find less expensive replacement products that make me feel as good as using La Mer has been difficult. The hunt continues. Love your channel. Blessings from California XXX

I remember buying La Mer, Issime, Caviar, etc in my 20’s when I did not need it, fast forward 40 years, and now that I need it I refuse to spend the money on it.
Regarding One Hit Wonders: I've heard it said that the difference between fashion and style is that fashion is fleeting and whatever's popular at the moment, while style is timeless. And classy.
First off, I love your videos, thank you for the smart honest sharing What I’ve stopped buying is monthly trips to the nail salon. A) because it’s getting soo expensive B) I want nice nails and with an ounce of effort and patience I can keep my nails good enough for day to day. Now if something special is coming up I can take the time to get them done and feel as if I’m providing a little luxury for myself
I still collect Southern Living Christmas special edition magazines. I love looking at the decoration ideas, gift wrapping and recipes.
Another awesome video. The secret is do what works for in make up and clothing. I downsized in my makeup routine because I found what my face really likes. I don’t shop for clothes on line because I’m short so have to try things on and I to like comfortable clothes on me. I stick with colors that I like and look good on me. Thank you again for a great video. 😊❤

Nikol, Thank you for the great tips! I’ve paired down my skin care routine occasionally but then I see something new I just have to try and it snowballs! Ha! Currently in the paired down mode. I’ve done this with my purses too - saying I’m going smaller so I don’t carry around so much unneeded stuff then next thing you know the big purse is back out.
OMG. The magazines. When Real Simple first came out I started a subscription, and kept every single issue. At about year five I realized how incredibly wasteful they were as far as fuel to ship, printing, paper waste, the content started to repeat, and they were a waste of space in my small office. I stopped buying all beauty magazines many many years ago because of the ads being 99% of the magazine and the false beauty=youth agenda.

I loved Real Simple magazine. It was the only one I ever subscribed to, but I would also buy other magazines at the grocery store. Lots of People magazines. About 10 yrs ago I suddenly got fed up with all the little ad cards inside as well as the limited content hidden among pages and pages of ads.....while prices for them kept creeping up. They also took up too much room. A couple of years ago I saw a mag while in the checkout line. I picked it up and was shocked at how much it cost. I looked at others and couldn't believe the prices they charge to see mostly ads. I don't even miss them now.

So for me, it really resonated about the color palette. I recently had my colors done, and I realized, I had so many colors in my closet that didn't accentuate my good points. I am a neutral, so I can make warm colors work, but I am naturally a Winter color. I also feel best in my bright colors. I am slowly weeding out my warm color palette. I LOVE yellow too! I think you look spectacular in yellow! I also have gray blend hair and fair skin, but I try to wear yellow as much as possible. I love the idea of wearing a pallette that works for me! I don't really fit into a season, but I think that wearing colors that I know are good on me, is a great way of thinking.....
I've had a similar journey and agree with all of these!! Thanks for sharing!!
I’m coming to the end of a buy & try frenzy that started October 2022. I started buying a lot of skin care products because I thought I had to try everything to find what worked. Consequently, I was looking better, but I didn’t know how! Aaaggghhh!!! I’m finally honing in on what is working and what isn’t. Thank you for validating this process. I thought I was the only one struggling to find the right combination. 😊 At least I feel like I’m on the right track!
So true. I have got so much that now I’m getting rid of it. Giving things away I have never used. I should sell them but don’t want to deal with that. So I give them to goodwill or to my sisters/friends. Nice to declutter. It feels peaceful getting rid of so much stuff.
I have started to purchase small sizes of products that you have recommended. I use them up and then decide how I liked them. This has been working great for me! Thank you!
You are so on point! Thanks for your insight.
YOU HAVE VERY GOOD TIPS! I am going to do these things! 😍😍😍

I never buy expensive skin care products anymore. The best cleanser is Cetaphil (inexpensive). I buy makeup wipes at Walmart & Roc eye cream. The only makeup I will splurge on is foundation & mascara but not above $25-30
For many years, I released one thing a day. It could be a big thing like a piece of furniture or small thing like one or two pieces of paper. After doing this for half a dozen years, I'm decluttered. I'm very considered about what I bring into the home. Even the mail, tho these days it's less and less an issue, gets sorted before I walk in the door with it.
I loved this video! I felt the same way about magazines and books and have stopped buying them too. Patterns are overwhelming for me. Thanks
I'm 61 and haven't bought magazines for ten years. This is all so true. I feel better in blue and light pinks, but try to introduce other colours sometimes, but always go back to what suits me. I want to be a beige person, but it looks dreadful on me and usually yellow does too. BTW I think you are one of the exceptional people who can wear yellow and look amazing in it.
Absolute best advice I have heard on your channel!! Thank you!!
I bought a very glittery long tight top this year. Its one of those things ill hardly ever wear, but if I need to glitz it up one day; I can. I will keep it always.
thank you for all your advice. Your beauty inspired me to go gray...cant wait till my hair grows to your length.

You got this!
Great minds think alike! I agree with you 100%. I am working toward "less is best".
Glad you are keeping everything simple.
Always love your videos! Agree, agree! I am so careful about things now being too delicate( sequins at a swing dance spontaneously shedding🤣) . Yes, I have to stop buying just because it's 30% off. I'm also a black, white, cream (Chanel!!) Gal. Never go wrong with it. ( Occasional red, coral in summer)
This was such a great video, Thanks for sharing.
Great video, Nikol! Excellent points!! I do buy physical books when it has pictures or it's on a topic that I study. Otherwise, e books have been a Godsend for someone like me, whose vision ain't the best. Yes, for decades I have almost NEVER bought outside my color palette. If i do, I instantly regret it. There's a reson why, even though I'm colorblind, I instinctly gravatate towards Fuschia. It looks great on me, always has. Even with my silver hair.
I stopped buying magazines several years ago also. Is felt like Was paying for mostly advertisements and only one or two interesting articles, recipes, etc. certainly not worth the price! Thank you for your list of 7 things! Very reaffirming! I DO NEED TO KNOW your blush and lip color!! Beautiful!
This was encouraging! Thank you! Jewellery especially stones ! 🙏🙏🙏
Great suggestions, especially impulse buying due to being on sale. I am reading Atomic Habits at this time also.
You always have such helpful advice! I would love to know how to find my color palette.

I saw online were you could find out what your palette is. I forgot were but you can try and google it.
Great guidelines over all, thanks for this info.
Lol…love these types of videos from you because we are similar that it’s as if I’m talking to myself..seriously…nearly every point…same! Magazines & ebooks…yup! Thanks!‼️❤️
Your suggestions are spot on! Thanks for being real!
11:06 EST great advice/suggestions, Nikol! I am with you on all of them! I have gotten sucked into having a few more skin products than I probably should be using, and then I get confused about what order I should be using them in, and how long I should wait after applying one product before I apply the next… I would love a list from you of what those four products you said you were now using are-not necessarily the brands but the types and watch order you use them. Thank you as always.

Yes. That would be very helpful. I need to narrow down how (and in what order) to apply my serums. I never took care of my skin, but I am trying to now. I would love it if Nicole made a video on realistic expectations that one can expect, at what point some of the laser treatments for the under eye or the “new botox” with collagen, etc.

@@penny7375 - Angie at 'Hot & Flashy' offers an AM and PM routine with a few well researched items that I've been using for several years and these have made a world of affordable and effective difference for me in my daily skin care routine - I'm fully silver at 67 now so it's been a journey.
This is a great video to find...validating especially about skin care products and curating what I like (Great perspective Nikol) and want more of by trying a few "sample" collections. I appreciate you voicing these ideas and actions! As for magazines, I have taken to browsing any that pop up as interesting while at the grocery store...not while waiting in line (as I use self-checkout lanes), but as an intentional pause, take the moment, then move on... An approach that helps declutter. Decluttering and simplification are my goals. You opened my thinking to sell some of my vintage clothing I do nothing with, or haven't worn. I look at some wardrobe items and think "I am not that same person" now as when I bought them. I will keep you posted. Thank you for your refreshing and validating outlook, Nikol!
Everything you touched on is so true we buy and buy and we don’t use or wear half of what we buy, thank you for sharing….😊
Late to contribute here: I’ve been working hard to break the “back stock” habit. Especially during COVID hot in the habit of buying multiples of everything - food, paper products, cleaning products, skin care, etc etc. The world isn’t going to end if I don’t have the next bottle/food item/whatever at hand when the current one runs out! So nice to start to be able to see the inside of my cupboards again!
Great advice. Thank you for the tip to get rid of my clutter!
I agree about the magazines and skin care. i have also stopped buying cookbooks. If I'm looking for something different, I can usually find it online.
I agree with everything you said. Books and magazines do create stress if you are not reading them. Digital subscriptions are more effective. I agree you should treat your skin based on your concern. Keep it simple and there’s less reaction. Buying within my palette is my goal this year. Love your content. ❤
I love yellow!! It has always been my favourite colour. Definitely less mustards and more lemons with my cool silver though. So sunny and uplifting
For me, magazines are a treat. This is a leftover feeling of indulgence from college when I really didn't have the money or the time to spend on a magazine. So if I did, it was a guilty pleasure. It still feels that way. I don't do any subscriptions except for two that are gifts from someone but if I just need to have a "turn the world off" moment, I'll sometimes "splurge" the money and time and buy a magazine and head for the couch in the winter or the lawn chair in the summer. For me, I am trying to limit hair care products this year. As a curly girl, you are constantly searching for the holy grail. As always, thanks for your videos.
💙 You! Finally someone who lay it out in a way for everyone. Thank you! You have beautiful presence and presentation 💙🥰
