Outstanding Tony - so much common sense. Players (youth players in particular) are always looking for the flashy tricks, but nailing the basics and improving confidence is the key

Hi, I’m developing as a footballer but one of the things I struggle most with is getting over the fear of tackling and putting in strong tackles, can you make a video to help. Thanks

I am 14 years old and the biggest regret of my entire life will be the fact that I didn't like football sooner. I started football around May 2023 but due to my poor life decisions (gaming addict for 4 years when I was little) I am extremely unfit. After about half a year of work I'm still not the best but I'm working hard and seeing better results. I do believe that I am at least slightly gifted in football but all that potential has been wasted. I'm bad under pressure , generally unfit , bad at shooting and dribbling ect. I genuinely believe that I could have gotten into an academy at my age, probably a lower division team, if I had made better decisions and realised that I can never change the past sooner. I have not given up and am trying to work hard but I'm just disappointed in myself.

Something that is only hinted at in this video but is actually very important to developing these skills is mentality. The way to develop good decision making between driving and passing is to do as he says and think about what is best for the team. You shouldn’t let your ego drive you. Too many players try one too many dribbles because they think they’ll look cool, or try an impossible pass when a simple pass is a much better option. 2 great examples of this in the pros is Messi and muller. Messi dribbles a lot not because he wants to look great but because he has a realistic confidence in his ability but at the same time can find incredibly great passes when necessary. Muller is the same but at the opposite side of the spectrum. He is aware that his dribbling is not the best so he plays with the fewest touches possible. Neither player is driven by their ego and that’s why they’ve both had sooo many goals, assists, and so much success. Next, in order to be composed you have to learn to control your emotions. During a match you should always be between a 6 and 7 emotionally. Any lower and you lose focus due to a lack of interest. Any higher and you lose focus due to a frustration, anger, nerves, excitement,or any other emotion that takes you out of your flow. A great example of this is kroos. When he plays he always seems in control without seeming bored or uninterested. Lastly in order to do the simple things in football you have to again lower your ego. One simple touch or one simple pass may not get noticed, but if you do them consistently people who know about the game will see your importance. Furthermore something funny happens in football and that is that when you play most of your game in a simple manner the more complicated moves become easier to execute, partly because the opponent doesn’t expect it and partly because now you are comfortable with the ball and have confidence in your ability to execute. All three players mentioned before, Messi, muller, and kroos, are great examples of this. All three have the patience and ability to play simple until it is the correct time to strike. Cruyff once said that the hardest thing to do in football is to play simple. So if you have the right mentality your game will quickly reach new heights, I promise.

As a coach I’m going to guess before watching and list my 7. #1 great first touch, #2 dribbler able to create opportunities with the ball, #3 great passer with vision to setup teammates, #4 high scan rate and know how to use that information, #5 choosing the best option vs ok to not great safe options, #6 having different types of passes and shots in their bag able to perform them with both feet, #7 great teammate able to encourage and build up others vs tearing them down with unhelpful yelling and criticism

I’d work on this in your training sessions. Try and perform drills with your head slightly lifted. Especially in between touches of the ball. It will feel weird at first and you’ll likely lose control of the ball. But by working at it each day, it will become easier over time. Keep your game play simple, and the rest will follow
