7 Signs Someone is Truly Mature (Wise)

How do you know if someone is as mature as they appear? Although we often associate maturity with age, there is also emotional maturity to consider as well. You don’t need to be in your seventies to be emotionally mature or wise. Some people can be well into their adult life, yet they lack the maturity of some of their younger counterparts. So how can you tell if someone is really mature and wise?

I remember when I was 13-14 and I was trying to act mature. Ended up destroying most aspects of myself. For what it's worth, I hate that word. I was deceived into believing being mature was a goal I had to achieve, and it ended up becoming an insidious mindset. This video has showed me I am not fully matured, but I've changed. More importantly, changed without trying to be what I am not.

Same to everything. And having taken this "be mature" thing through my life has kinda ruined things (?), but maybe is because I skipped the part where I must be assertive; and the video kinda skips it too. Being mature or emotionally mature is to accept all emotions and to feel the pain, sadness, anger or joy that any situation brings. And that is where things like patience, empathy, no need for attention, humility and etc roots. I kinda hate this word too now, something that had so much meaning has turned into a label and a weapon for somebody else to control you by telling you: oh, truth is you are no very mature.

Daniela Pardo, oh my god. You literally just read my MIND. Everything you just said is exactly how I feel about my life and the people around me. I feel In my heart that I am not all that mature, or perhaps not as mature as I should be. What I find really flawed about this whole “being mature” thing. Is that anybody can look “mature” or do things that society might see as mature and “adult” such as drinking alcohol or watching more adult shows, but truthfully those are all meaningless things that a person only ever does to make themselves look “mature”. You can never see into another persons heart, and only they themselves can know truthfully just how mature they are. Just like you, I hate how maturity has been flipped on his head and is used as a weapon. One of my cousins is such a huge example of this, he is about 13 and watches a whole lot of anime. Although he never says it directly he shows through his absolutely fucking obnoxious condescending tone that he clearly sees himself as more mature “than me”. He also totally sees his love for anime as a staple of his “maturity” and the only way you could manage to make him see you see you as “mature” is if you live life the way he wants you to and share the exact same interests. Such as anime. I just hate people who use the societal pressure to be more mature as a weapon and call anyone who even slightly lives their lives the way they want to as “immature”. I find being mature very VERY difficult. I am a very social person so looking more “mature” is not as hard. But truly being MATURE on a level that only I myself can see is a challenge. Perhaps I’m just not willing to put in the time and effort to be more “mature” and the circumstances that might need to happen for me to want to be more “mature” might not ever happen. But at least I can actually admit that instead of being like these clowns who boast about their own “maturity” Jesus Christ I spiraled out of control writing this comment but I needed to rant lol, thx for anyone who actually took the time to read all this 😂

@@jayt7278 I was like your cousin when I was 13 lol, but with music, and met plenty during my teen years. Is part of forming an identity I think. He will snap out of it, hopefully. In the meantime, teasing him every once in a while won't hurt. What you said about being critized by false staples of maturity can be very true, like you said: drinking, adult tv, maybe partying, being like cold and serious and "deep" (those people can be very annoying) etc are seing as adult stuff. What I meant in that sense is that, in my opinion, another false staple of maturity is repressing your emotions and avoiding conflict. That causes that false image of a pacient kind "mature" person, but is not, is just someone who is letting everyone damage them. And all thanks to wanting to appear more adult than other people. "Mature" can be a weapon in many ways, damn. But maturity is more than that for me now that I am older, and I def do not consider mayself mature anyomre lol. It takes a lot of responsability to be an actual adult, and lot and lots of empathy and compassion, but it has to come from within. I think a way of doing that is knowing yourself and meeting more people, constant learning about living will get us there. And of course, the circumstances help to shape us. Don't worry about the rant, I love writing them and reading them too. Greetings (?).

Yea! The thing is that every generation has their own trials and tribulations. Some people (not all) like to hold their struggles and experiences and use them by themselves as a measure of maturity. It's a very selfish thing to do and is not mature of them. Just because they emerged triumphant on the other side, doesn't necessarily mean they were steadfast in making the right choices. They may have done hurtful things to themselves and others to push their way up and over. If you understand that and you can be happy by being proud of yourself and staying humble simultaneously, you're more mature than them. ❤

Anger isn't inherently bad, it's just expressing it in healthy and safe way and trying to minimize contact with persons who don't respect your boundaries. It doesn't matter what others think, especially strangers. The last time i got angry in public setting was about 2.5 years ago so that doesn't happen often (came home to discover that my partner had moved out while i was at work, after telling me she loved me that morning - i regrettably stopped by her job). I'll admit i did react immaturely to that which triggered past trauma for me. No one is perfect but when i fall short i try to take accountability and make amends to those persons i may have harmed. I'm 19 y.o and I honestly want to be married by next year, in two years I want to start a family. I have to work on a lot in order to be ready for all that responsibility. Both in discipline and spirituality. I am exited to build a family in which God is present, I will try my best to work on myself and become a good wife and mother. Of course that I have other ambitions in my life such as career, but to be honest, nothing lights up my heart like family does.

That's wonderful. Make sure that you find a person who has the same values and goals as you. Make sure that you and the other person know how to set and respect boundaries, apologize, and forgive each other. Make sure that you both believe that your marriage is a sacred vow that you would never willingly break. I say this as someone who has been married and divorced. Marriage is the most important commitment that you will ever make.

Be patient. Being a mother is a lifelong commitment and responsibility. Working harder has nothing to do with being good wife or mother. Take your time, live your own life first, be patient. Also be carefull what you wish for, because that knight in shiny armour, can become a dragon in a split second. Good luck and take your time, instead of rushing and planning everything ASAP.

What if you acknowledge that you are mature and you ARE actually mature? You don't try to make others think u are mature but think you are at least a bit mature, does that mean you're immature? I don't think so if you really are mature. If someone thinks they can run fast (but don't think they are super fast or something, just fast enough)and they can ACTUALLY run fast that means they acknowledge it.

I will conclude that I am a person with developing maturity. I can describe myself as patient, I do actively listen more and talk less, I can describe myself as open-minded, and the optimal self-development I am currently aiming at incorporates the remaining four guides/teachings. I still struggle often, no mistake. No matter what progress you make or how much of it you manifest, regression is ALWAYS possible. It never becomes impossible, no matter how confident you are in your growth. 💙

I've been told I'm wise by family, friends and even people that have passed in my life for only 16 hours and I truly believe them. Particularly on the self-awareness point, it's very hard to deal with difficult matters when you're emotionally self-aware of what you're reactions and emotions can bring to others, plus being conscious that every action has its consequence. No, in fact it's more easy to deal with the issue for a self-aware person but it becomes more difficult to do it with a non self-aware person because they'll, most of the time, decide of what's best for them and them only, not thinking of the consequences their decisions might bring on to others. I suggest Psych2Go to do a video on the subject by the way ! I think there is a lot to say about non self-aware people (emotionally as well as in general) and how we can better live with them (if that topic hasn't been adressed yet of course).

If only "special" wasn't bad news in such cases. You don't want this quality to be rare 😂 At the same time, let's also acknowledge that in our modern times it is easier than ever to reach a good level of maturity at a very young age and "by yourself" as in = by choosing from the abundance of high quality teaching materials available for free use on the internet. Such as this video. No so long ago, in now well developed countries, people died at 30, 40ish in masses. 😂 I'd say we're overall making good progress, considering each generation has to go through sets of experiences from 0 nevertheless, to internalise things

I'm told that I'm mature for my age. The position and role I had and have made others see me this way. It's hard to try to "live" up to these expectations. I don't know if I'm mature. Maybe I am, or maybe I'm not. I don't know. I have a problem thinking though about how I should act and what I should do and say to give the impression to others that I am mature. It feels like I'm not mature because of the way I think is childish. I seek the recognition of others, so my peers and those around me can be confident that I am who they say I am. I can relate to some of these in the video, but then I think maybe I'm not wise/mature. At my age, there's no way someone can be wise. There's not enough experience. But then again, it goes into the meaning of wise and what it means to an individual, so who's to say who's wise or not?

Calling myself mature would never be a sign of maturity. I feel we often learn from our past and present and we all have a lot to learn. To listen to others, to feel them, and to understand things, ourselves, and the world around us. To act with our minds and our true personalities rather than to wear a mask and project ourselves to be something we are not. Often it's never an easy life as such life, but then again nothing comes off as easy. To let our feelings dictate our life is to push our lives to ruination. I am still immature and I still let my feelings get the best of me at times, but I am certainly learning and creating a better me for the future.

Personally, I never found myself to be mature even when others see myself as such. Mainly for one aspect you've addressed here. Listening to everything you've had to offer here in this video, I understand myself more than have before and know more as to why people think I am mature for my age. However, I will say that your first sign is something I still need to work on. I do have everyone's best interest in mind when making a decision, I do listen to everyone and support them in anyway I could. Although as you say, "words have weight to them." And I tend to get emotional hurt and damaged with people's words, thoughts or opinions when portrayed to me. Thus I get defensive and quick to anger as a result. I would say I'm close, but this is one downside that is a major bane of mine that I must overcome and I thank you for this video❤

Yep. Be empathetic with yourself. Also, the matter of maturity is pretty subjective. With some of these things I could disagree with. Just because a person listens well doesn't mean they're mature. Also, I think people need to work on self awareness first. Realize what causes you to experinece certain emotions, why you get angry at some things others may think are nothing to be angry about, why you befriend and attract certain people, and why you're attracted to them. Things like these are much more important than maturity to me. I don't believe someone can always be mature, or in a healthy mental state all the time, but if you have self awareness, when you're at the lowest of the low, you'll be able to tell those around you your needs which will help you get back to a better state. Sometimes you may go back to a bad habit of the past, but you know that you can still go back to being healthy again, and that shall be your inspiration to move on. Being mature and healthy goes hand in hand with being immature and toxic, you'll constantly experinece all of them depending what you're going through, so i think it's important to learn what causes you to shift from one side to another. Never too late to learn, good luck. I believe you can make it :)

For me a big sign of maturity has always been when someone no longer feels the need to prove just how mature they are. When they don't need to performatively push away "childish" things or ridicule the people who engage in them, but aren't afraid to embrace them because they know it doesn't matter.

Not sure if this is mature or not, but I always attempt to find a way to do something productive with my negative emotions. And if I can't do something productive with them, I detach myself from them and let them go. It's helped me to stop holding grudges against anyone, and also helps me quell emotions like greed or envy. But things like anger and frustration can be channeled productively into finding solutions, or if I can't do that, at the very least a really good gym session.

A lot of times, I feel like I am mature, but a part of my mind thinks that I shouldn't think that way or that I'm feeding into my ego and being boastful... I do feel like maturity shines in the way we act towards our circumstances and how we get to that action, but I dislike it when people around me (that I know) say that they're "mature" when they don't act like it. We may have our moments where we act out, but I don't want people to see _that moment_ as our natural behavior. What I mean is that everyone views emotional maturity differently. 🤷🏾
