To say 'you can never miss..' is optimistic. It used to be the case that they would escort all the latecomers through the tunnels to make sure they got their train. I can't see them bothering now, what with night tube, all-night buses and the complexities of interacting with other transport providers.

Oh the very rare occasion something happens on the line, we can call a PNR but it's at very few stations this is available so we are at the mercy of luck.

Is it true there are fully automated trains where the driver only intervenes when there is a problem? What do they do the rest of the time? Also, it sounds like dim lights in the driver's cabin could be true, if for some reason the train stops between stations bright lights would make it harder to adapt to the dark in the tunnels, can you confirm?

The idea that the central line is overcrowded because it’s fast is hilarious, and just dumb 😂

Agreed. I can think of at least half a dozen reasons why some lines might be more crowded than others. And the speed of the line isn't one of them.
@RVNmax

Not totally untrue though. I live next to the Picadilly line. I walk 20 mins to Central line rather than take Picadilly. Central is fast, frequent and straight across London. This results in a quicker journey from outer London. I know many who choose the same instead of taking the District line also, which stops a lot.

I worked on the Underground in 1986 to 1990. Back then loads of people would miss the last train. There were no barriers, in fact they were just starting to talk about implementing them. Back then it was called the UTS. The Underground Ticketing System. We nicknamed it the Useless Ticketing System, because we all thought it wouldn't be as good as having a ticket collector on the barrier and people would just jump over them. I was the Station Forewoman at Chalk Farm and I would have to lock up the station after the last train and open it up again in the morning while I was on the night shift. I was rarely on my own though, because the P-Way guys were stationed there and they often worked through the night, though we had separate offices.

If you’re in the deep stations near the Thames look at the tunnel mouths. A lot of them have flood doors which can be closed if there’s a major breach. In the tunnels if you look out the windows you’ll see 2 bare copper wires about 6 inches apart. As I understand it a driver can connect a crude phone to them to speak to their control room.

Yeah, I've totally missed the last train when changing lines... And when you're going E to W, that means getting a cab because no way I'm changing three buses past midnight 😅 I learned my lesson
The last time I was on The Tube in London was on the 25th June 2002 from Heathrow to Piccadilly Circus (apparently the last train) off the last flight from Dublin heading for Soho - Heathrow at that hour is like another planet, I had no idea where I was going in Central London and the tube staff at Heathrow were incredibly arrogant and rude, adding to my terror of travelling alone outside Ireland and I was terrified and scared stiff the whole time, being directly underneath Big Ben at the stroke of Midnight, which frightened the living daylights out of me, having got lost half way up The Mall - what I did notice about the tube even on a chilly night was the intense wall of heat in the tube tunnels and platforms - I spent most of that night in Balan’s Coffee Shop in Soho, heading for Euston the next morning for the train to Manchester but got lost on the Circle Line trying to find Euston with an outdated copy of Spartacus gay guide for London
Secret 8 they have special rooms where they store the bodies of jumpers
I score this 3/7. 1 - false, you can miss the last train 2 - central is not the fastest line and its crowded for other reasons 3 - trains do have lights in the cabin 5 - trains are not completely automated, braking and speed are sometimes on some lines
