At Oshkosh 2018, a quick look at the new Diamond DA62. This is a 7 seater, twin engine airplane from Diamondstar. one of their newest aircraft. We are also waiting for the twin engine DA52. My first impression of the DA62 is that it is quite big. Put it next to the Diamond DA42, the twin 4 seater, and you’ll see the difference.
Diamond DA62 has much longer wings also the airframe is longer and wider. The DA62 can sit up to seven people. There are 3 rows of seats. 2 in the front, 3 in the middle, and 2 more int the back. I wanted to see how comfortable those back seats were, so I got in. The verdict is: they are comfortable, lots of leg room even from adults, but very limited head room. Those back seats are probably best for children or very small body frame adults.
Moving on to the cockpit, the Diamond DA62 is all modern. Has a full deck of glass avionics, your controls and switches are very simply, and most notable, the DA62 double engines have a FADEC (A full authority digital engine (or electronics) control system). It’s quite nice actually, as it reduces time on the ground for flights. Also takes some workload off the pilot. There are no mixture or prop levers, so you only have the Throttle control to play with.
The DA62 will cruise between 159 knots to 200 knots while burning between 12 an 17 gallons of jet fuel per hour. The price for this beauty? $1.2 million.

I need(want) one. Awesome video!
I have flown the Diamond DA62 which, in my opinion, is the most modern, safest twin flying today - nothing gets anywhere near it, so far as the competition is concerned, hence many major airlines are today training on the DA42's. The Diamond Aircraft Jet-A1 fuel twin engine DA 62 is an all carbon composite air frame incorporating advanced aerodynamics with the latest passive safety technology for high performance, greater efficiency and superior occupant protection. The aircraft incorporates a “Formula 1” monocoque, which is stiff and strong to provide survival space and protection in case of impact, yet the non-critical structure is allowed to fail to help absorb crash energy. Likewise, the fuel cell is extremely well protected by the fuselage safety cell structure, yet separated from the cockpit, reflecting today’s modern automotive practice. The turbocharged Austro AE330 jet fuel piston engines control system is jet-engine simple - no manual mixture control, no magneto ignition, no manual priming, no prop control lever, no hard starting - hot or cold, no manual run-up tests, no shock cooling, no cowl flaps, no power calculations based on rpm and manifold pressure - with each engine and propeller combination controlled by a single power lever and power settings displayed in % power. Simplified control, which takes the guesswork out of power plant management, means one can focus on the more important things, such as situational awareness and safe flying. The fully integrated glass cockpit Garmin G1000 NXi incorporates innovative capabilities into a state-of-the-art avionics platform. Featuring wireless cockpit connectivity, including wireless database updates, enhanced situational awareness with visual and aural cues, advanced doppler weather radar capabilities, map overlay, traffic alerting, as well as synthetic vision, to name just a few. In fact, everything has been designed on this aircraft to enhance in-flight safety and reduce pilot workload, especially when flying during inclement weather, over inhospitable terrain, water or at night - a pilot's dream! The front and mid-row seats take 5 adults comfortably and if you are small or have children, the rear seats are more than adequate. The windows are so large that everyone has a fantastic view. Do not just take my word for it. Have a look at Flight International's review and you will be convinced that Diamond Aircraft is most definetely the way to go..... kzread.info/dash/bejne/oquCpaWahNO9Z7g.html
Super videos mate!!!
Love this as a Personal plane to build time towards qualifying for Turbine Jet!
Nice plane.
Would be awesome if Diamond Aircraft would offer: optional dual side panel mounted control sticks, and/or dual rams horn yokels. Aso, because of size/7-place, average flight mission and the power-plants, Diamond should offer an optional pressurized cabin. If any GA twin should have these options, it is the Diamond DA-62...imho. Happy/Safe Flying!
Cool Aircraft the DA-62. The back seats are the best for Kids.... But a cool upgrade in comparison with the DA-42. Thanks for the video, 👍

FINALLY a video showing the rear seat...Sadly, I wanted to see you in the 2nd row...along with two other adults. Looks a little cramped 3 across.
Whoa Bro. . .you must have been out of the loop for awhile. I first did a touchy-feely of a DA62 back at ModAero 2016 in Conroe, TX. I've been hooked with this plane ever since. People have done the math and find it to be a really easy to fly and economical twin. Jet A helps reduce the operating cost. So far, I've not heard a downside for the Diamond once purchased by owners.

Dude, you got one of those smiles that makes me smile, lol. Good job on the review. I had the pleasure of a demo flight a while ago and it's a fantastic airplane. Much more comfortable than the DA-42 which was a bit narrow.
Nice video. For reference, how tall are you? That figures into viewers assessment of headroom. Cheers
Awesome bird, feel like for that price you could get a used turboprop and go much faster. I guess this makes sense if purchase cost isn’t a concern but operating cost is

Yeah......that price tag is a slight beef for me. I might even suggest making a partial glass cockpit with mostly analogue gauges an option so you can get it for cheaper. Dont get me wrong I like glass cockpits. But what happens when you have a screen backlight give out, or have a total electrical systems failure? I dont see any backups for that.

The initial cost is high but it only burns 15 gal per hour of jet A (cheaper than 100LL) at normal cruise. Oil change every 100hrs, overhaul of the Mercedes diesel at 2000 hrs are a lot cheaper than basically replacing engines for most traditional airplane engines and way less than turboprops. A dream to fly, easier than a Cirrus...which is a single engine.

The back seats are optional, can switch out for more space. Maintenance cost can be quite high if you follow the manual to the “T”. I work on DA40s/42(NG)/62s

123OGNIAN Like every 900 hours it will cost about $8000 to replace the injectors, under chapter 4 in the maintenance manual. If it’s not a new airplane, meaning some of the maintenance manual replacements items are due, probably looking at 4000 and 6000 for an annual. That would be including flat rate annual cost. some replacement items can be relatively small, whereas like the injectors above can be pretty expensive. Other big-ticket items would be the engine manufacturer wanting you to replace the fly wheel and hub assembly every 600 or 900 hours. Probably about $2000 in parts in about 10 hours labor each engine.

Ehh a new G58 Baron costs just about a million as well, maybe a little more. You'd definitely spend more on fuel, Barons are thirsty, looking at least 20 gph/side in cruise.

@@TWhite94 but a used low time baron from the 90s - mid 2000s is 300-600k. it can burn 21-23gph at 185kts tas. The baron 58 is all around faster in cruise and in a climb, will perform better with one engine and will carry more weight 1600-2000lb useful depending on yr model. even better yet you can get an all glass low time baron 58P for about 5-600k and have pressurization a max cruise speed of about 230-235kts and still have a 700k-1m left over for fuel and operating costs. this just brings up the question. The spec sheets don’t mention the engine out climb performance. The reason Diamond doesn’t list it is because it’s terrible. Just like light twins designed 60 years ago, the DA62 can’t deliver any useful single engine climb performance because the single engine power loading (or, power to weight ratio) is so poor. You also don’t get propeller auto-feather in this “modern” twin.
@thedrewlook
4 жыл бұрын
The FADEC will auto-feather on engine shutdown, and its single engine ceiling and performance is actually much better the piston twins of the past. The engines are also rated for continuous operation at a very high percentage of max output as well. Need it also be mentioned Garmin ESP, GWX 70 weather radar, and FIKI capability?
@rv7ator
4 жыл бұрын
thedrewlook (1) What you have described is not autofeather because it requires pilot action (turning off the engine master switch) before propeller feathering occurs. This is akin to manual feather using a propeller control lever except you’re just using a switch to do the same thing. Autofeather systems in contrast will initiate feathering without any pilot action when an engine power loss is detected, such as negative torque being applied to the engine (propeller windmilling). (2) Single engine service ceiling numbers help sell airplanes, but they don’t represent practical performance capability. The climb rate can go down to 50 ft/min at the service ceiling, and there is no minimum climb rate at the other end, down low where it really matters. (3) TKS anti-ice is better than boots, but heated leading edges is far superior to TKS. With liquid cooled engines, Diamond missed out on an opportunity to use the hot engine coolant for unlimited anti-ice
