Atlantic Crossing Flight Prep + DA62 Familiarization - Series! Ep One

Part 1 - DA-62 familiarization and Flight Prep for North Atlantic Crossing.
The biggest #generalaviation Flight I’ve ever flown! Austria to Canada.
Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight.com/flightchops
In this multi-part series, the largest general aviation project in FlightChops history, ride along with us as we team up with the Diamond Aircraft ferry crew and act as pilot flying on delivery of a new DA-62 light twin aircraft from Vienna, Austria to the Canadian base in London, Ontario Canada.
In this episode we get familiarized with the DA-62 prior to heading to Diamond Aircraft’s factory in Austria where we meet with Martin and Micke and get some further training on the DA-42 that Micke will be flying in tandem with us back to Canada.
During our initial “big briefing” as I’m calling it. we discovered a great deal of the flight will be IMC which presents a great opportunity to further refine my #IFR flying. We relied a great deal on ForeFlight for the mission planning and as a backup throughout the journey.
I also made a point to test out over-the-ear and in-ear headsets while getting familiar with the DA-62. The Bose ProFlight in-ear headset ended up being incredibly comfortable and the noise cancelling was far superior to what I expected was possible from an in-ear set in a piston aircraft.
As the journey unfolds, we will release some awesome extended footage to Patrons between each consecutively published episode.
Keep an eye out as we release each #oceancrossing episode back to back!

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I am a huge diesel fan. Their efficiency, performance, reliability and simplicity (relative) are all great. Having them on a GA aircraft with that level of automation is just the top shelf. And knowing guys like these are involved with building your plane is also satisfying. You know it's done right.

Ah, Vienna! Built to be the capital of an empire - now the capital of a middle sized Central European country. It really is quite an experience. Also, Diamond airplanes are cool. Expect when they're not. I'm a member in a club that has a DV20 that mostly works and a DA40 that mostly doesn't; lastly, a piston blew through its cylinder and the crew had to land on a field. Luckily, and thanks to the skill of the pilot, nobody was hurt and the airframe didn't sustain any damage, so a new engine it is (again), and maybe next summer she'll fly again :-P

Wow... what an episode. The fact that it only covers pre-training, factory tour, Vienna and Austrian check out really illustrates the immensity of the experience. I bet you're glad you have as much footage as you do; I'm sure so many aspects of the experience literally and figuratively flew by. You have a rich treasure chest of archives with which to relive it all. I've never seen Vienna, but I have looked down on Salzburg from the Alps above Berchdesgaden, Germany; I'd love to see more. And the DA62; what an incredible aircraft... especially those engines! This is the first time in my life I find myself lusting to own a twin engine aircraft. So glad this trip is being presented sequentially; can't wait for the next episodes. As for my airplane, pretty much ready for first engine start, but don't want to do it until the intersection fairings are complete. It's really hard to work in an unheated hangar in Michigan right now; slowing me down a bit... but I keep inching closer.

Hey @goatflieg I've been watching your build on mykitlog and wondering when you'll do your first run! You're almost 4000 hours into your build and haven't turned the engine over yet! I thought maybe you were waiting for a refresher with Bruce Bohannon. Keep up the good work! That air intake is a thing of beauty, but I don't think I'd have the patience for it.

  • @goatflieg

    @goatflieg

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Redchrome1 There are a lot of reasons for the high hour count, mainly due to being a first time builder. I want to make sure the first engine run is close to the airworthiness inspection and first flight. It's ready but I don't want to run it, then let it sit for months again. The Bruce Bohannon refresher will come immediately after first flight (with qualified test pilot) and then I'll take over Phase 1 flying.

I got to tour the London production line several years ago when I worked for one of their suppliers. The D-Jet prototype was parked inside still. Awesome experience.
