7 reasons why your best employees want to leave

Hiring and then retaining the best staff is a massive challenge today. Competition for skilled and talented staff, particularly in retail, is at an all time high. With customer experience at the top of the list, it is essential that retailers have the best people in their stores. The challenge then, is to keep them.
Millennials are renowned for their job hopping (or so we are told) as they look to build experience as well as work out what they want to do long term. As they make up the bulk of the workforce, when a retailer finds great ones (and there's plenty out there), they need to be able to hold on to them.
This video uncovers the 7 reasons why any team member (especially millennials) wants to leave, and highlights what to do to reduce the likelihood of them leaving.

    Money is a huge factor. When HR decides to have a freeze on raises, that will make people look elsewhere. Now if you're a really strong employee and get a job offer somewhere for more money, then you can let your current company know this. Sometimes your current company will find a way to pay you more to keep you. Basically come up with money that they supposedly didn't have before.

    Damn, I wish middle management knew this stuff. Something managers don't seem to understand. My work environment is so stressful. Honestly, I can't perform my job in a timely, accurate manner because management is always adding more demands that could result in a write-up if the demands are not met. Literally, I'm so worried about my job, that I can't accurately do my job. I have not room in policy to work.

    Manager said...." help him/her because she/him is a hard worker". Wait...I said to myself...we are all hard workers. Why point out this one person. So who is going to help me ? I'm a hard worker.

  • @johnrainsman6650
    @johnrainsman66502 жыл бұрын

    One of my most loyal, hardworking employees just quit. I don't even understand. I'm a banquet manager, and we were about to serve a wedding reception. A student supervisor was letting everyone know the instructions for the night and asked if there were any questions. No one said anything and she said, "okay, cool." Well, one particular worker (let's call him Rick) had a tendency to _not_ get it. He often needs clarification and assistance with certain tasks. This was the night the student supervisor sent him to get something for her, but he couldn't find it, so I had to help him. Well, based on all that, I just wanted to make sure he understood the instructions, so right after the staff split up from hearing them, he went to the counter to get his drink and I followed him and said to him quietly, "Did that make sense, Rick?" According to a letter he left on my desk weeks later, that's why he quit. He felt so patronized and underestimated, he just couldn't work for me anymore. Accused me of implying he was dumb and singling him out. Well, I wouldn't say I "singled him out," because it's not like I had to ask the other workers if the instructions made sense. They seem pretty competent: you give them a task, even if it's their first time, and they understand and do just fine, without struggling. Rick is...different than that. I think he's overreacting. He mentioned in the letter that he already had doubts about his brain and struggles with school (example, he had to take LOTS of time with assignments), and apparently my question made things worse: now his grades are slipping because he feels he really is dumb, purely based on what I said. But I can't own that. All I did was ask him if he understood the tasks, because this was a very important night and shift. I even spoke to him in private, not in front of the others. And the truth is the truth: he has a hard time understanding information and tasks. I _really_ don't think I said anything wrong. I think he's just overthinking everything and letting it wipe out his pride. I'm sorry about his grades and insecurity, but it's not my fault. A manager is supposed to check on their employees and their capacity (and limits). So seriously, what did I do wrong?

    Okay so based on what you were saying the only thing that I can think that could have offended Rick was probably maybe the tone or demeanor in which the message was delivered. Now I'm not saying you were offensive or burlesque about it because it also seems like he also has issues performing well at school so this seems like it stems from many other factors rather than just work but unfortunately for you, you happened to be the dropped the spilled the glass. Just bad timing I guess, he was probably was already sensitive for not doing great at school (because I reckon kids were not nice about it either) and he took your comment as an offense rather than clarification. I definitely wouldn't say is your fault specially if your intentions were only to clarify him the task maybe just awful timing. Maybe try to speak with his parents if you can, let them know he maybe in need of support. Sometime kids are to prideful to ask for help even if when they really need it. Now you are his employer and are more than welcome not to get involved in his personal life because real life is real life and he may again misread your intentions of helping as harassment, invasion to privacy or maybe even stalking. What I'm trying to say is weight your risks versus your benefits and try to make the best you can of your situation. It either gets better or worst but addressing it is essential.

    @@damianmontesvargas5673 Well, I will admit that _TECHNICALLY_ I didn't have a motive...per se... _in the moment_ that night to question if he understood the tasks; I just wanted to check with him because in _general_ he is slow at grasping. His expression to the student supervisor's question was the same as the others; not one of them looked particularly different or puzzled, so Rick didn't stand out that moment. But like I said, the others seem generally smart and capable when it comes to tasks and information; Rick is...different. And you know, when a person is often late, it's fair to assume you should tell them the arrival time is earlier than the actual time just so they make it when they must. You gotta anticipate people's actions and brains for the future based on the past, not the present moment, you know what I mean?

  • @damianmontesvargas5673

    @damianmontesvargas5673

    2 жыл бұрын

    damn honestly pretty tricky situation then. If he didn't looked confused at the time maybe he did actually got task the first time rather than his usual multiple attempts. Maybe he felt like you were insinuating he didn't understand but given his history is not totally unreasonable to assume that . As you said before if an employee is know for being unpunctual said employee doesn't really have a ground to complain if reminded about punctuality.

  • @johnrainsman6650

    @@damianmontesvargas5673 You knew that punctuality was just a metaphor to illustrate and clarify my point, right? How the past defines anticipation for the future?

  • @damianmontesvargas5673

    @damianmontesvargas5673

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@johnrainsman6650 yeah I got that , I just thought it would be better to answer with a similar metaphor rather than crudely saying you called him out clarification and that he got depressed because of it. For example let's take your last question as an example. There is many ways this question could be interpreted, it all depends how it is delivered. Let me give you two examples. One, I could get offended by thinking that you asking whether I got your metaphor about punctuality or not is actually a way to subtly insult my Intelligence rather than get any real feedback from me . The Other could be, and this only happens when people are calm and collected, is that the interaction goes something like this reply and the receiver (in this case me) takes your question as critically as possible ( to the best of my abilities) and give you the feedback you ask for. It all really depends on the tone and also the time in which you deliver it. I would say based on your previous question it's extremely likely your demeanor was the problem. Self awareness while addressing others is a vital ability specially for managers. Pay attention to that last statement about self awareness. Do you think perhaps there is a better way to phrase that? Does it imply you lack self awareness or does it state that self awareness is vital? The tone in which I deliver said statement will decide how said statement is received. I tried to be as literal as possible this time maybe this helps 🤔?

    "profits over people" reminded me of "profitless activities" which is a different side of the problem. in other words, meaningless work, doing things that don't really matter only because the boss says so or because of some silly tradition. the best employees value their time so using their time for little to no value is one way to drive them away. in my opinion bringing home these meaningless time-draining tasks to home during the pandemic is another reason why many resign.
