I love your "review" because you point out something that is hard to describe: the feeling of you, the player, discovering something instead of the in game character discovering something. When in other games your character would learn a new ability, in Tunic you, the player, learn a "new" ability, ralizing that you could have done it all along.

It had a lot of potential but lost me at the end with the mandatory boss rush which always just feels like the developers ran out of interesting things to do and the game is quickly over after that with 1 additional boss. I think they should have had the additional powers kick in earlier in the game to really feel a benefit. A great game by today's standards of AAA games but historically it's average if you went to like PS2 catalog and the real peak of gaming

God... Elden ring and now Tunic. It's rare to see a game come out that actually tries to make itself difficult for adults but in a fair and magical way. Tunic is a masterclass on how to make a game hard in all the right ways. I was perpetually confused, but never frustrated. I spent the whole game in a perpetual state of wonder and exploration. I was sitting there trying to figure out game mechanics like an old school game but without any of the limitations and frustrations that would seem to imply. I truly felt like that 10 year old kid playing twilight princess for the first time. I got out pen and paper, for gods sake... AND I WASN'T EVEN UPSET ABOUT IT. Elden ring also did this to me but, for me, Elden ring's magic wore off sooner. It never stopped being fun, just stopped being mesmorizing.

I love your whole retort you made about finding pages of the in-game manual and making discoveries on aspects that were already available to you. I’ve never seen such a thing from any other game. A lot of games feel so formulaic that a game like Tunic breaking that mold feels refreshing. I love that about this game.

I recently picked up Tunic without knowing much about it because it looked cute. While cute, HARD. I didn't really grow up playing video games, but I watched friends play video games and was constantly looking at the instructional booklet. Collecting those pieces throughout this game has been really fun. And the amount of exploration and unknown in this game keeps me coming back, despite the fact that I usually have to respawn every few minutes, haha

Why do we always distinguish Soulslikes from Zeldalikes when one evolved from the other? Especially with games like Tunic and Death's Door, its clear that Soulslikes and Zeldalikes are cut from the same cloth.

I feel the influence of Hyper Light Drifter in this game when first started, after the fox got that ‘ability’ it became evident. Games like this is hard to come by, even from indie developers. One has to fully understand the essence of gaming to make something so deceptively simple, yet more complex than many of the AAA games.

Finji, the game publisher; has made a great amount of beautiful games that are. One, great at telling a story, and two, incredibly fun to play while doing so. Some of these games include, Night in the woods, Chicory: A Colorful Tale, and Overland. Although these games don’t have as much gameplay as TUNIC does, they have an outstanding story and they tell it in an outstanding way I could never think of doing. I’d totally check them out.

Not to be rude, but please remember that Finji PUBLISHED the game, not actually make it. The real developer was Andrew Shouldice, and he doesn't directly work for them as far as I know. Aside from the music and sound effects, he made the whole thing on his own. Don't get me wrong. Finji makes great games and I can't wait to play Tunic myself. Sorry if it sounded like a rant, but it just felt like Andrew is not properly acknowledged. That's all.

Tunic is amazing! I love the intention behind the cryptic hints! It's character it brilliant and absolutely charming. There will definitely be another! Definitely a wolf in sheep's fur. It looks very deceiveing, and unassuming. Definitely a looter, and look EVERYWHERE, can not stress that enough. Not for the faint of heart. High highs, and devastating lows...like souls....it is a difficult game at times,, and I don't recommend it for someone that isn't profoundly intuitive and of worldly common sense, as you will need both especially with the games inherent intent on figuring out the booklet. Its very elusive and immersing, and the music soundtrack from area to area, is chef's kiss...you feel ties to tunic, and you Definitely build a relationship and empathy and sympathy for him... 5 🌟 . Absolutely worth the price tag, as it was priced so fairly for the amount of content, and quality. And the theories and concepts behind this review are unlike any other channels review of this game, and I'd say wonderfully accurate and open minded.

I wasn't sure about this one at first. It popped up on my home screen after my Wi-Fi hiccup and the console reconnected. It caught my eye because I tried the first tree sometime ago, which you may or may not know also involved a fox. I absolutely adored that game, so seeing yet game created by a small indie developer involving a fox intrigued me. So I started the download and went right back to what I was doing in destiny 2. That guardian game was grind. When I got the notification that the game was ready to start, I figured I would take a quick break from destiny and see what the game was all about. I was immediately hooked. I am currently hunting down all of the gold coins because I didn't bother finding them on my first playthrough, and only recently discovered that I could customize the fox.

I agree this game is a gem in the industry, the minimalist low poly like graphics are amazing, the world building is on point, the gameplay - even tho you have to do a lot of backtracking - is great, the sounds, music and to mention the genius old school manual type of maps, gameplay, items abilities. But. There a big BUT. The only thing that destroyed my love for this game it is the damn save system. One file only. Every time you save the game it does it on one file, you can't have multiple saves. The savepoints within the game are nothing but respawn points in case you die, that have nothing to do with the main save file. So, in case you get bugged and can't get passed it you think "ok, I'll just load the save and it will take spawn me at the last check/savepoint. Not even close. It will spawn you exactly where you were before loading SO you'll spawn in the bug and there's nothing you can do about it EXCEPT start a new game. So after more than 6h of gameplay I was at a point where I get an ability of forward dash, that is awesome and helps you move faster, reach places you couldn't before and it doesn't consume stamina. I was so happy that now I could explore more. So at one point I chain dashed to pass some enemies and somehow I got thru a closed door that I found out (from yt) it will open way later in the game. Now I found myself in a room with some cool loot but couldn't get out at all. I said fine, I'll reload the save. Guess what. It spawned me exactly in the same room at the bug. I exited to the titles. Reload again. Same thing. I exited and restarted the game. Load the save. SAME GOD DAMN THING. There was nothing I could do and after all this time played I call it quit, fuck it, I won't waste 6more hours just to get to that point so that I could continue into the game. I ended up "finishing" the game by watching someone else's video on youtube. This is bad design for a game save system.

I dunno, I've played about 7 hours of it and nothing is really keeping me in. Things are obviously really well done, but it still just feels like another well done "one of those". Despite it's mechanics borrowing from souls games, it is VERY much a Zelda clone.

if Tunic reminds me of a game, then it is Hob (yes, the "unfinished" but still worth playing Hob)

One guy just took his time, didn't rush out an unfinished game full of bugs, etc. And released a very solid game. Bravo, more power to him.

Not worth the release date full price. Just wait for when it is at least 50% off. Even if it takes a couple of years. You are not missing much.

I did not like this game. It was just bad guy after bad guy that came back every time you left the room. It has the look of a Zelda game, but no puzzles. Just bad guys.

So bored of "souls-likes" but I guess Dark Souls made a lot of money so everyone will keep copying it for a good while. Yawn.

This is one of the most annoying games I’ve ever played. Navigating through it is a drag especially if you die I found myself just getting tired of not remembering where I was let alone how to get back to my ‘soul’? Love the concept but I think deaths door is far better and tighter.

The "lore" can be unreadable, but never the game mechanics. It's a great game & the cryptic nature of the controls is a detractor. "How to play" should never be something the player has to piece together.

Hmm... strange . Making a game harder is actually pretty easy - just give the bosses high HP and make them invulnerable to your attacks. This is a campy way to make a game longer - often used in the 80s when companies would port their games from Arcade to NES. Now I hear that even on the first boss you were struggling. Damn, sounds like they're at it again. We can still watch let's plays but... not sure if that's my style.

Making a game hard is not "campy", it's a design decision from the developer. Nothing strange about it.

@@Avioto Well that's because it's really really really easy to do - just set the HP high for all the bosses, as I said. What's campy about is, it's a way to get longer playtimes out of a game without real content. More interesting content and puzzles would be way more interesting than dying the same boss for an hour.

There's an option to enable a "no fail" in combat mode which you can use if you're dying a lot. There's also a stamina tweak. From what I hear, even if you enable the "no fail" mode, the exploration and rest of the game still present challenges that make it enjoyable.

Giving something more HP doesn't make it harder. It just makes it take longer.

Oh man, I've never had a game I've been so looking forward to be completely ruined. I hate Dark Souls, I have no desire to play a game that fundamentally disrespects my limited time. Tunic has gone from immediate-purchase to wait-five-years-for-90%-discount.
