Here are 7 Reasons why Firefox is my favorite web browser to use. This is an opinion video and I don't expect everyone agree with me but these are some of the reasons that I prefer to use Firefox over any other browser. There are many other reasons but I had to draw a line somewhere. :D

Vim stuff is available with addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tridactyl-vim/ The extensions were broken once because they changed the API used to make the extensions. They don't "keep breaking them" it happened once and that is all and it was planned and warned for 2 years yet some devs didnt bother to port. Why are you saying signing an extension is bad? I did a "trail" to switch to safari/chrome a few months ago. I end up switching back to FF because of all the add-ons I am using. There are things Safari / Chrome do better, but FF win over all for me. I used Safari for few years and loved its pinned tab, which is handled separately from other tabs, and won't disappear if you close the wrong window last. FF team refused to change the pinned tab behavior and I have to live with it for now. (Though I am changing to a new work flow and get rid of all my pin tabs). Chrome has most the plugin I use in FF, but can't stand the lack of build-in proxy support. On a Mac, the Chrome proxy setting button actually open the OS network settings. Though proxy add-on is working.

Vivaldi has grouped tabs, but not tree-style. Chrome has/had a tree style tab, but it was in the form of a separate pop-up while the the top tabs remained in place. @@michael_tunnell Oh no! I've been trying Firefox again, and while the speed is acceptable and the killer features are... killer, I think that I may have found a deal breaker: *Tab switching!* It is extremely unpleasant in #Firefox: 1. Sometimes it has delayed responsiveness, even on my 32GB i9. Very minor, but noticeable if you switch tabs frequently. 2. The thumbnail gallery thing is incredibly, visually jarring and in-your-face. 3. *Worst:* Control+Shift+Tab doesn't work unless you _first_ hit Control+Tab to bring up the annoying thumbnail gallery, and only _then_ you are allowed to tab back! This is not consistent with _any_ other program on macOS (and I'm assuming on Windows as well - Linux I have no idea because I only use command-line Ubuntu or CentOS [because #GUI == wasted resources], but nothing is ever consistent in Linux GUIs [GNUIs?] anyway). It is *quite* frustrating when you switch tabs very frequently. :(

  • @michael_tunnell

    @michael_tunnell

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@dmhendricks ok so there are a few things to unpack in your comment. (also sorry for the delay in response, KZread decided this comment needed review for some reason and didn't bother to tell me that) #1. Firefox default tab switching system has become a weird experience. I agree. I think that Ctrl+Shift+Tab activating that weird dropdown menu is just super awkward. I also agree the thumbnail gallery for switching is rather inefficient and annoying. HOWEVER, thankfully . . . you can turn this crap off. -- Go to Preferences -> General -> Tabs and you will see an option labeled "Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order". Uncheck this option to go back to the normal Ctrl+Tab forward and Ctrl+Shift+Tab backwards. #2. Delayed response should be gone after unchecking that weird setting as well. #3. a GUI on Linux is not wasted resources. If you are using Linux on a server then sure that would be wasted resources but Linux on the Desktop is awesome and certainly having a GUI there is fairly needed, I'd say. :D #4. Nothing is consistent with Linux GUIs? That's not fair to claim because there is a lot of consistency however through innovation there will be differences and thus not everything is possible to be the same. Windows and Mac don't innovate . . . anything well not for decades anyway. It is possible that Apple innovated the dock paradigm but Linux had that very early on as well . . . so hard to know but Apple probably did that one. However, Workspaces aka Virtual Desktops are now in both macOS and Windows but those were innovated in Linux so this lack of complete consistency is what allows innovation and what allows macOS and Windows to steal their ideas. #5. with that said, there are a lot of differences and that can totally be jarring to people so I don't deny there is an issue there. That is one of the reasons I made my channel to help people transition to being Linux users and find out why Linux is such an awesome option for the desktop computing. :D

And besides that, the old version was on its limit, while the Quantum is still in heavy development and the change to the new addon system was a good decision in the end. In example it allows for the addon developer to release same version on all platforms (with slight modifications), in example in Chrome. Most or some addons are even available in mobile Firefox browser. And performance and memory usage and so on is a huge improvement, depending on the system.

    Whoa, keywords sound really powerful! That's something I don't think Chrome does, unless a custom "search engine" is created for every single website...which is stupid compared to how Firefox does it. I have to agree, they need to make the keyword field visible when adding a new bookmark. Also, used Firefox Color to create my own theme. In a recent month, I downloaded Firefox just so I could give my website an automatic light theme (default is dark), but found myself using it more than Chrome! Now I basically never use Chrome, unless it's Google's Keep app or Chrome Remote Desktop (since at least that won't suspect me of non-existent "commercial usage" unlike TeamViewer...). After hearing about how ad-blocking is going to be basically destroyed in Chrome, I think I've made the right decision going with Firefox. (Also, used Firefox on Android because add-ons are a must, so I can send tabs between devices too!)

The way i achieved it was to right-click the KZread search field and click "Add a keyword for this search" and set the keyword to "yt". This is much faster than typing "KZread.com", waiting for the site to load then searching what i need. Great video overall, and i think you should make a video on the more advanced keyword usage!

    The main reason I believe firefox doesn’t eat RAM so much is because of the extreme effeciency of the Rust programming language implemented in the browser. It automatically puts memory on the stack that is in a scope, and you can easily assign a variable to a new variable, without creating 2 new copies, so that after the redefined variable is run, x = 6 to y = x, the 6 is merely moved between this variable, and when it leaves the scope {} it uses a drop function built in rust.

  • @michael_tunnell

    @michael_tunnell

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for commenting and those are great questions. I'll do my best to answer them. Migrating isn't that big of a task as it might seem, for example bookmarks can be automatically imported from both of those other browsers. When it comes to passwords, you should not store passwords in a browser regardless because they tend to have poor security for that. You should migrate your passwords to Bitwarden password manager bitwarden.com/dln (#sponsor) This way it doesn't matter what browser you use the passwords are always accessible and the security is much better. Otherwise, I'm not sure what else you may need for migration tips, feel free to ask questions. Chrome is integrated with Google services which is to be expected due to Google making Chrome too but nothing is really a deal breaker to using Firefox. I also have Chrome installed because of garbage stupid websites that require it for their service but I absolutely hate those websites. There used to be a time where jerks would be like "best viewed in Internet Explorer" and now we're driving right into that stupid wall again just with Chrome this time. A single browser engine is never good because it destroys innovation and competition. Firefox is really the only true competition since everything else just seems to use Chrome's engine anyway. So you may still need Chrome but 99.99% you won't. I very very rarely open Chrome. At most once a week but usually once every few months. Firefox has so many more awesome features that Chrome is of no interest to me. Oh by the way, I have a video on my channel for more details on Container Tabs (#1 in this video) if you want more info on that. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eJqCl65uqqSwhdI.html

    Sorry, you cannot easily disable telemetry. Only when one installs configuration file prepared by Librefox, Firefox really "shuts up" until it is asked to load a page. But I agree that FF is the best browser right now. I like Vivaldi also, but they don't give an option to fully disable connections to google and perhaps other entities.EDIT: 60 tabs - LOL; I currently am juggling 437 tabs in 3 windows... :)

    Interesting, I'll need to look into that telemetry issue you mentioned. I was actually laughing at the 60, that's my minimum usually lol I typically have about 150 but limited it for the recording lol

    I assume it is connecting somewhere because it asks DNS to resolve names like shavar.mozilla.com or whatever. It's probably something benign, but I have my ideal - no connections when I'm not asking browser to connect. And right now only Firefox with Librefox configuration does this (which involves lots of about:config options). And I'm not pleased that Mozilla starts doing some questionable things; in comparison with Google it is minuscule, but still I don't like it. Like disabling unsigned extensions or requiring to install some extension to update certificates for extensions signature-checking.

    Hello. When I seen your video first time I thinked that managing tags will be easy and go straight to it. Now I use tags in firefox instead of folders two month already. But sometimes I can't find not frequently used staff. Please make video on tags bookmarking in firefox.

    My favorite features from Firefox are: 1. Use about:profiles to manage more than one profile. You can launch more than one profile at the same time, and the new profile will exist in a new window, with settings associated with the new profile rather than the default profile. You can set different proxy that Firefox will use only for this new profile, and the settings are completely separate from your default profile ;) 2. If you have hundreds of tabs open at the same time, making it hard to notice the page title of each tab, but you have a rough knowledge of the title. Search the tab instead. Use shortcut "Alt + D" and prefix your search terms using percent sign '%'. For example: '% 7 reason why' 3. You can copy a list of plain text URLs, and paste it directly into Firefox bookmarks. And they will be stored as new bookmarks. Try copying these sample URLs *FROM A TEXT EDITOR INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY FROM THIS COMMENT* kzread.info/dron/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/lHuIpKpyqdWepdo.html kzread.info/dron/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html/videos kzread.info/dron/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html/playlists So you might want to copy then paste these to Notepad or any text editor first to correct the disrupted 'Enter' character that is supposed to separate each URL. From that, you can copy then paste directly to the Firefox bookmarks. Open bookmarks with Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks Or just do Ctrl + Shift + B, or Ctrl + Shift + O Create a new folder to contain the copied URLs, then paste them After that, you might want to click right on this new folder containing the recently copy/pasted URLs, then click "Open All in Tabs" This trick is helpful if you want to read manga that doesn't have a "Show all in one page" option

    Thank you so much for the detailed comment! I was aware of #1 but never tried it, I need to do that. I've used everything else except the copy and pasting URL list. I was not aware that was a thing, thank you! :)

    @@michael_tunnell Oh minor correction perhaps. You need to copy the said list of plain text URLs from a text editor to make sure the 'Enter' character that will supposedly be the delimiter work. Copying the list of plain text URLs from the KZread comment I made disrupted the 'Enter' character in between

    Container tabs It would be like having 'incognito' windows but classified, wouldn't it? I am wondering if I can use the contents as Workspaces, since I have Workspaces in Edge that open specific sites 🤔

    Hey there thanks for commenting, It doesn’t work like incognito at all, it saves history but also Container Tabs does not require multiple windows which I believe is better. Yes you can make sites only open in specific containers if you want
