And right before the lockdown, which I had foreseen would come, I had also stocked up on canned food in addition to the dried ones. Now he is as much of a prepped as I am.

I am in my 70s and so grateful I began watching prepping stations. I'm on a limited income but started buying extra canned goods when possible. Tried container gardening this year, only cherry tomatoes survived too much rain. I have kale and cabbage growing now. Bought a dehydrater and experimenting with that. Did potato slices that turned out. Lost 70 pounds, eating more whole food, plant based and eating less and skipping a meal. Buying bottled water, have a life straw, and some small water filters. Also have been buying over the counter medical stuff. Have a small solar generator and bought a portable washing machine. Been doing laundry by hand. Will continue to listen to my favorite pepper and homestead channels and will continue to add supplies as long as I can. Good luck everyone. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

The food/eating comments especially caught my attention. We had a time (17 days to be exact) after an ice storm of Biblical proportions when we had extremely intermittent electricity and water and below freezing temps all day. Being preppers with heat, light and the ability to cook, we ended up with quite a number at our house either to stay or for meals. Most were staying, lined up in the living room and extra bedrooms. We did notice that the folks who were used to eating out all the time were the ones hit the hardest as their taste buds had acquired a taste for the salt/fat/sugar that is in all fast foods. ALL fast foods, even those 'Healthy Places' folks flock to. Everyone ate well, but the Out to Eaters always felt like they didn't have enough to eat. They did, it just wasn't satisfying because of what I'd now term an addiction. Time now to wean off those lattes, chicken tenders and burgers. Side note: everyone pitched in, no loafers or freeloaders; everyone extremely grateful--but when it was all over, all but one went back to business as usual. We only 'made' one prepper out of the deal. Good vid, as usual!

I agree it’s the carbohydrates and sugar that they eat making them crave and always be hungry . I just started a keto regimen I feel full all the time On very little food . I also have much more energy and my brain fog is gone completely . My cognitive function is far better as well . The brain is mostly fat so makes sense it needs more fat not empty carbohydrates and sugar . I also fast so this will make me go up to three days with nothing but water which saves in the food consumption in the house . I can afford to feed someone else for those three days , they can eat my share .

Nicely done, I did something similar myself in the last few years. I have to strongly disagree with the Prepper advice to run for exercise, though. Running is HARD on joints, cannot be done by everyone, uses up (expensive!) shoes far more quickly, and comes with greater risk of injury, which will delay and disrupt any prepping plans related to health. Not to mention the risks from pre-existing conditions. For humans, unless you're a child or a teenager playing, running is an emergency procedure. Make sure you're fit enough to do it by *walking*, not running. So, respectfully, I say "Don't run, WALK".

Slowly building up my mountain house. Should have 1-2 years of freeze dried + 2 years of canned/frozen goods prepped. Took quite a while to get it all prepped. Best way I can tell people is pick a plan of buying stuff every week or month; and stick to that. Do it consistently and you'll reap the rewards down the line. Don't try to do it all at once. Stay safe out there.

A tip I never see mentioned: Take advantage of food banks. I grew up very poor and I learned that a lot of food banks have more food than they can give out. Mostly canned, powdered milks and potatoes and a ton of rice and beans. -exactly what you want. Ive talked to food banks near me and after they close up for the week they just toss the rest of the cans and stuff out. Since finding this out I go to almost every one in my area and Im comfortable with at least 6 additional months of food I’ve obtained over a few visits. Good luck out there

You missed a golden opportunity during the "don't waste food" section, to teach viewers the MOST IMPORTANT THING about growing even a portion of your own food - how to build and maintain compost! Use up all vegetable scraps, the greens that are turning to slime in the fridge, and the coffee grounds, to enrich and fertilize your soil. Second point for those in suburbia - many individuals and HOAs systematically poison the soil with twice-a-year applications of weed'n feed. Be aware before you start planting.

911 was a wake up call for me and got me slowly becoming a Prepper. It’s hard starting from scratch especially shortly after that I got hurt in a work accident and then after a few years got injured again working so I started prepping while on disability which can be done for $10 a week. 2009 came and I ramped up my prepping and started networking with more preppers and militia movement minded guys and learned various skills that I lacked. Through the 2010’s networks got bigger and training opportunities came about and prepping got to be more of a lifestyle. When Covid hit in 2020 I was glad I was prepared a lot better than a majority of the population because most purchases were topping off instead of scrambling like people were doing and I’m still going strong today. I’ve tried to steer people in the right direction when the wanna learn but it gets frustrating when you hear them say they can’t afford to prep on a budget of even $10 a week but meanwhile are hitting the neighborhood bar 3-4 times a week. There’s nothing wrong with blowing off some steam and you can always make prepping & a social life work for you just gotta learn to do it. Some things take priority in life and you can lead a horse to water but you can’t force them to drink…..

Phasing out the traditional hand pump for water was one of humankind's biggest mistakes. They worked perfectly fine for hundreds of years and suddenly "hey we have electricity and drills, throw those pumps out!" and now when the power's gone we're stuck. I love your balanced approach to all we are facing now, which is so well displayed in this video, thank you. Having been a prepper for 20+ years, I also share your views on educating people on where to begin. Lately, i find myself reassessing my preparedness and find it lacking in one critical way, and that being all the things, (mostly food-wise, but not entirely) that I cannot produce or obtain if SHTF. Deep larder, yes. Heirloom seeds, yes. First-aid, check. Defense, and so many other things, yes! Where I am lacking is in all the things that a multi-year or decades long event would leave my family/group short…I cannot grow salt, and do not own a pepper tree. I don’t live in a coastal area where I can obtain the fresh seafood my family enjoys eating. Things like durable shoes, clothing and gloves to keep everyone physically safe over a prolonged period of time. Please consider doing an in depth video on assessing beyond the one year goal for those that have the basics covered but need wisdom on moving forward in their preparedness goals. I love that you have touched on this, however, no one has done this that I’ve seen. I appreciate your vision and channel, keep it up, and many thanks!

Already bought land and have been slowly planting different varieties of crops that most people haven’t heard of. If you live in a warm climate you can grow these crops that are bullet proof: Chaya, moringa, sweet potatoes, yams (dioscorea Alata), cassava, arrowroot, dasheen, malanga, longevity spinach. You can have success growing in a colder climate with extra care.

You don't need a lot of land to take care of your food needs as suggested. I do sustainable gardening and it's easier than you think. Most people tend to go all out, get overwhelmed and give up. I've gotten a few of my friends into gardening and food storage. I always give the same advice. Pick a few varieties of climbing beans that you harvest dry (a black bean, a red bean, and field pea/bean) and potatoes. You can literally take care of your nutritional needs with beans and potatoes. A variety beans covers protein and vitamins A to Zinc. Potatoes cover your carb needs. Grow vertically, there are plenty of how to videos for growing potatoes in buckets (easy method) or doing potato towers, both methods get the most out of your grow and are low maintenance (you'll be swimming in potatoes). Storage is simple for harvested dry beans. Just store in zip-loc or vacuum sealed bags. If using zip-loc, add a silica pack. Potatoes can be stored long term in a cool dry place. You can get 2 growing seasons for potatoes each year. A winter/spring planting and a late summer planting. Enough to have potatoes year round. Start small, but you can pick your favorite additions such as tomatoes, peppers (cayenne is a good choice as it provides a natural anti fungal and boosts the immune system), and/or squash. Carrots are a good starter, because you can regrow. Use a deep planter box with loose soil. When you harvest your carrots, cut the top off the carrot off (about 1/2 inch), and stick back into the planter. It will grow a new carrot. Asparagus and Swiss Chard are good choices too, as they will keep coming back year after year. Asparagus is very nutritious and swiss chard provides an easy supply of greens. You can plant kale in your flower beds as it looks pleasant (often just grown as a winter ornamental) and is a good source of winter greens. For a summer crop, switch out to ornamental summer greens (spring mix seed packs are good) which adds a colorful mix of edible salad-mix varieties. If it's an area with afternoon shade (morning sun) you can grow spring-mix all summer long (spring, summer, well into fall). Learn seed collection methods (easy seed collection starters are summer and winter squash varieties, peppers, and even tomatoes - although tomato seed collecting is a messy process and a bit tedious). You can collect seeds from just about anything you grow, even kale. Learn what wild/naturalized plants you can eat. For example, eastern redbud trees are good edibles. The flowers and seed pods are high in antioxidants. The flowers, seed pods, and young leaves can be eaten cooked or raw. The seed pods contain protein. Other wild edibles that grow in most parts of the U.S. include dandelions, chickweed, and wood sorrel. Honey locust seed pods are a good source of complex sugars (when the sap starts oozing out of the seed pods). The entire sunflower plant is edible (different parts prepared differently) and the young leaves are a good source of greens/antioxidants. Cattails roots can be prepared like potatoes and are a good source of starchy carbs. Young green briar shoots can be prepared like asparagus and are very nutritious. The young leaves on green briar can be used in salads or cooked like spinach. It's a good idea to get a book on wild edibles for your area. Along the lines of food, if you live in an area with an abundance of small game (most of North America), get a .22lr rifle (I recommend a 10/22 take down). It's easy to stockpile 1000s upon 1000s of rounds of .22lr ammo and I look at it like this, each round of ammo is a potential meal. If you live in an area that is water rich (streams, lakes, ponds, etc) no need to waste space by stockpiling tons of water. You only need a 72 hour to 1 week supply. It's better to have water purification methods. Can be as simple as a life straw and as complex as diy gravity filtration systems. I recommend the hand pump filter systems that can be tossed in a backpack (there many options). Convert your gutters into a rain collection system.

I don’t justify anything to anyone. I just quietly do my thing. Everyone knows I can, dehydrate, etc. We know how to garden & preserve, have even taught classes on this. I used to get teased about being a prepper, and all the time I spent making everything from scratch. Now I answer a lot of questions.

I learned to prep as a 3 year old. My grandmother was an immigrant from Sweden in the early 1900, Pre WW1. I Have had to survive several times through my life on my preps and am now 74. As a historical interpreter, I have been able to expand my skills. Plan ahead and practice primitive skills. You just might need them. All of my 5 babies took their turn as the baby in the cradle at various historical sites and all have learned amazing things in their lives. We may never need these skills but haven't lost anything by planning ahead and learning more.

I should not have but I let my feelings get real hurt this weekend by a close family member that honestly and irrationally blew up on me when they asked why I was buying a case of canned chicken and creamer when I picked up a birthday cake for my kids birthday party and I was like in case something happens I feel like we are on the edge of a cliff and teetering. The kids wasn't in the car (though mine have grown up with me prepping) so he didn't get mad at me for scaring the kids. But he went off really bad and hurt my feelings calling me all sorts of names and telling me I am going to be disappointed that I wasted my money on junk when nothing happens. I was like well if it doesn't good if it does at least I will be able to take care of my family. Come to find out he pretty much eats out all the time and shops every few days so maybe I scared him by making him realize his lack of preparedness. I have been a prepper for 11 years so I'm used to being made fun of but no one has ever reacted to me with anger. So yeah my prep of the week is cutting this person out of my life.

Please note: you will need TWO apple trees, for cross pollination. They do not need to be the same type of apple. Do your research. Trees don't produce apples until 5 years old. Inquire the age of the trees you purchase. Making chunky applesauce to can is a great way to preserve your harvest.

I honestly think some people are naturally inclined to prep, while others can be brought on board. Who knows why that is, but when I saw the Ukraine situation, I made a WWIII list for myself. Mainly things I’d been putting off, like new eyeglasses. One thing you didn’t mention that’s on my list is to get my passport renewed. I checked and it had expired recently. I can hear in my head those old films where the officer is demanding someone’s papers. I also plan to print out my health and vaccination records.
