Well, I'll share this about adding creams to hair and then getting into the pool. Rarely have I been as embarrassed as the summer of sixth-grade when I took swimming lessons. Had a Jheri curl at the time and wanted to kept it hydrated so of course was using curl cream. That first day I suddenly heard kids going "eeewwww ... what's coming out of your hair ... look, looook." 😅And I was just one of two Black kids in a class of about a dozen kids being instructed. So, as you can imagine, that was the last time I went under the water with hair that had product in it or without a swim cap.

I think I would have been so embarrassed as a kid 😅. Someone mentioned grease as an alternative and I think that’s a way better solve. Swim caps would be the best bet, but it’s hard finding ones that fit our heads comfortably and still don’t get our hair wet. Then again I think swim caps are pretty tight in general lol! Thanks for sharing your story. Words from the wise!

    1. Humectants and dry environments: Not my problem..I live in humid places...although airconditioning can be drying to my skin and hair but I use a super lightweight mist such as KeraCare Curlessence Moisturizing Coco Water and AS I AM Jamaican Black Castor Oil Water 2 or 3 times a day to combat that. 2. I haven't worn a long term protective style with added hair since 2019. My trichologists asked me to stop due to my ultra fine hair. 3. I clarify once every 4 to 6 weeks to chelate and remove product build-up. I always use a protein-free deep conditioner after. 4. Because my hair is ultra-fine, I can't actually feel all the strands with my fingers so no finger detangling only for me. 5. I swim in twists in my regular life at the pool or loose hair in the sea on vacation. For the pool, I usually wet with tap water, cover my hair with conditioner and two swim caps. One that is less slippery and one with a neck strap. No ill effects from the chlorine. My hair doesn't react badly to sea water but I do still wear a hat from the UV rays. I've never been swimming in fresh water like a lake or river. 6. yeah I'm to lazy to heat-style my hair. Lol! Plus living somewhere humid with my naturally high porosity strands means that blowouts and silk press never last long. 7. Water: yeah I'm bad at hydrating internally. I always forget!!

Thank you for the video, the advice about the clarifying shampoo was good for me. I inderd hate the feeling of super clean hear, because it doesnt feel soft and manageble, but ill use a mosturising one after. I have a good tip for going to the beach. I mixed a cheap conditioner with sunflower en olive oil. I put some twists in my hair with the product and made two cute buns on the top of my head. We went surfing that day. When i came home in the evening to wash my hair, it was still so soft hahaha Also i sometimes put beads in my hair, and if im fed up, i love being able to just take them out in a couple of minutes

Hi LaToya! I love your eye makeup and that necklace. Well, you always look good. 🙂 That suggestion about wetting your hair first, before going in the pool/beach I wasn't aware of. Hmmm! I actually have that first swim cap you mentioned: You go natural, I believe. I have to happily admit, that it's worked to keep my hair absolutely dry. It's just that I can't keep it on for more than an hour. Girl, I can't wait to get out of it. LOL It's too tight for my big head, but since I don't have another option to keep my hair dry when I go in the pool/beach... I'll keep using it. Plus, I do like the turban design look of it. I'll check out the other swim caps you mentioned. Thanks for all your tips especially regarding humidity! Take care girl!

Yeah contrary to popular belief, swim caps are usually not made to stop your hair from getting wet. They are to keep your head more streamlined and...hair out of your face while swimming. For longer hair, they also stop it from tangling in the water. I dunno about tight swimming caps from my sensitive scalp perspective....Lol!

I've found that unscented/fragrance-free shampoos are a good alternative to clarifying shampoo as long as I shampoo twice OR follow up with a moisturizing shampoo, but I also have sensitive scalp.

Hair goals :) Do you ever do protein treatments on your hair ? I'm currently a year into my natural hair journey and haven't done one, I don't experience breakage and my hair is growing nicely. I just saw conflicting info on YT and wondering if I should add protein to my routine.

Yeah do not add protein if your hair doesn't need it. Reasons I use protein, I have ultra-fine and fragile hair that breaks easily. My hair is naturally high porosity. I also got bleached honey-blond highlights this summer. Protein and Olaplex are my life. If your hair isn't breaking or prone to breakage do not do a protein treatment or use Olaplex. @@jdd6958 My trichologists do not think that braiding extensions help the hair with retaining moisture. That's their professional opinion. When I was younger I would keep my braids in for 12 weeks...however, I still washed and conditioned them every month and re-did the ones coming loose especially around my hairline. My scalp is a bit more sensitive as I've gotten older so I probably won't keep them that long.
