    You're right about the harnesses, but for the wrong reasons. Yes it does keep you in place and allow the neck to take the momentum, but so does a standard seatbelt that has a locking mechanism. Where a harness gets dangerous is when it isn't fastened properly in the car. In racing, there are regulations about where a harness must attach to a frame member, and this is all in relation to the driver. Improperly mounting a harness can result in serious spinal injury if you get in a wreck. Source: I build racecars.

  • @BlackOpsHR

    @BlackOpsHR

    2 жыл бұрын

    Pretty sure the standard seatbelt is ment to be used along with the airbag and so when you hit something your body tilts, you get closer to the steering wheel and you hit the airbag from pretty much every distance to the steering wheel... with a harness I can see you not even getting to the airbag before your neck snaps

  • @spamaccount2915

    @@BlackOpsHR Yeah you should really only have a harness if: it has an aftermarket wheel, if it has a roll cage w/ harness bar, if it has aftermarket seats, and if you actually need it.

  • @Hangule4

    @Hangule4

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@BlackOpsHR actually if you look at the SAE documents and requirements, the airbag is considered a secondary passive restraint system. Which means they are tested independently from the seatbelt. The 3 point seatbelt's main purpose is to hold you to the seat, the cross strap is to prevent submarining. Note that none of this have to do with risks related to basilar skull fracture. If you look at the FIA research into this, it only happens in racing, where an accident can potentially bring a driver going from 60+MPH down to 0MPH nearly instantly. The risks are both a combination of the sudden massive drop in speed as well as the added mass of the head + helmet. Both conditions which don't exist on the street. The only problem with a harness is that they are typically 4 point, which does nothing for anti-submarining, and like mentioned above, are commonly incorrectly installed inducing risk to spinal compression. There are manufacturers like Schroth that sell perfectly street-legal harness that do have an anti-submarining strap that "snaps" open, allowing the body to torque over the lap belts, just like a regular 3 point seatbelt would do, but it's still up to owners to properly install harnesses as well as use a correctly sized seat.

    I'd add to all this: Do NOT lower your car so low that you can't get in and out of driveways: apart from the obvious, being this low can cause strikes on the cars chassis rails. THAT can render your car an instant write off, depending on where you live. Super-dark tint: I promise you you won't see well at all at night, and if your street isn't well-lit, you'll be bumping into things. And in frigid winter driving at night with windows open just to see out of the car is a so-so experience. Big heavy wheels with super low-profile tyres. They rob power, they make your car drink more fuel, they blunt acceleration, they increase loads on suspension, they do not like potholes AT ALL, they easily damage from those pothole hits buckling the wheel and cause tyre bubbles which can lead to it bursting. Chrome wheels. They are ok when they are new. But. Once chrome begins peeling off, it's only a matter of time when it'll make a gap between rim and the tyre causing an air leak. That can only be stopped by peeling all the chrome off. Not acceptable to owners of such wheels when that happens, so either expensive repair or new wheel. And that is inevitable since moisture condenses inside and starts corrosion process. Chroming isn't perfect so it's ALWAYS the case. Unless you run exclusively dry nitrogen in them. HID globes in a reflector headlights. Wanna get defected? Or worse beaten up? Then that's a mod for you. Truck drivers might just run you off the road for this. Not fun to be blinded by those things.

    I will agree it seems like subies of this gen are overdone in the tuner community. But any good platform has a large following. And if you go with something unique it unfortunately may not have as much aftermarket support. I will say though that (in general) the older a car is the more unique it can be. A 4th gen honda civic with a K swap and minimal rust seems much more unique then a GTR or 370z. But what it all really depends on is your end goal and personal preference.

    Engines are designed to get wet. It’s not going to hurt anything from just rain. But overall, it’ll create more filth in the engine bay which could result in issues down the road if there are any leaks. Keeping a clean bay allows to keep an eye on things and easier to spot issues earlier.

    @@garagemonkey526 Not entirely true. Like most things in life its gonna depend highly on your particular situation. For example I have much stiffer poly lower engine and transmissions mounts in my 2019 MINI JCW. These don't drastically increase the amount of vibration felt in the cabin but do wonders for cutting back on the stress put into the upper engine mounts extending the lifespan of those. The stock set up allows way too much movement in the engine and tends to kill upper mounts at around 50,000 miles. The real take away should be do your research and know your car/platform before doing mods.

About suspensions, I was planning on installing lowering springs for a little 25-30 mm drop. They only cost like 150-250 €, it looks better and the car would drive slightly better overall. And it still allows the car to be a daily driver. But in the end I decided not to do it, because installing the springs costs me 530 € and then I have to pay 429 € to make it street legal (papers etc.) where I live. In total, it's around 1100 € to lower my car a little bit. So I was like nope not gonna happen XD

    Seats, I agree with. Steering wheel and harness/roll cage I agree with. Your exact explanation of exhaust only applies to certain vehicles. I have always run catless exhaust on my car but they are all v8s and not a 4cyl that gets super ricey and drone-y when you do that. I always see kids throwing coilovers pretty much right away and their suspension is rock solid. I run drilled/slotted rotors and ceramic pads and they work better than factory even 2 minutes into the drive. The vented hood just doesn't make much sense, engines can get wet. Other than the engine bay being a little dirty what real issues do you think that proposes?

    Omg I have “track” pads on my sti, honestly so annoying, sure it’s great on the twisty back roads but holy hell. Driving down town or regular driving is terrible, gotta slam the brakes as they’re not heated up yet, squeal like crazy until they’re up to temp, just all around not fun, once these are gone I’m replacing them with some OEM+ pads

    the exhaust is why I always recommend that if the car is your daily that you instead do a cutout with a toggle valve. Keep the mufflers on so it's relatively quiet, then have a switch inside the car to open a valve on a split pipe on the exhaust somewhere before the mufflers that lets you make your car loud on demand. I've got it on my 370z and having the choice is well worth the extra few pounds of weight.

    Exhaust volume is extremely subjective. Another persons loud can be another persons quiet (or vise versa).

    It's not how loud it is, but it's the constant drone at certain engine rpms that is really fatiguing. If you chop the muffler off and replace it with just some pipe it will drone and sound like ass

    15 wrx owner here. All I have done since it came with them when I bought it is put nameless brand muffler deletes. Everything else is still stock. The subie rumble is more tonal throughout the car to the exhaust from the engine. It can be loud at acceleration and high rpm or just low drone at normal speed. All based on what your loud is and what rpm’s you cruise at. I like occasionally hitting the gas to hear it or doing some spirited driving around especially when you know the areas to get on it for the acoustics. Hasn’t got annoying to me yet. I’d search for videos of whatever setup you are looking at. I’m sure someone has a video of startup and running sound for it.

    I'm for cautioning people on the exhaust, but honestly some of us love it. I don't care about the noise, but I love the feel of the sound. Stiff suspension is preferred for some people as well. Those two are personal preferences. The others make sense.

    Kind of surprised that a really aggressive clutch wasn't on this list. Nothing like not letting anybody else touch your car because they can't hope to drive it without chirrping it or stalling it.

    I’ve got a 370z and I’ve been wondering about lots of these mods and DD things because I don’t drive it everyday, but I drive it often so this video was extremely helpful, love it. I have the sports package so I already have big 4 pot fixed calipers in front and 2 pot fixed in the back, 19” rays forged rims, LSD, rear spoiler and because I have a manual trans it has rev matching which is so convenient when cruising. The mods I currently have are ark dt-s cat back pipes and the z-speed external slave cylinder, that’s it. I have a large 20” custom sticker and a few others that match it, it looks amazing, I’m more of an atheistic person for my street cars, track is a whole different world. But I love this car the way it is, those few moments I’m driving hard and I wish it was a little stiffer or had a bit more power are so far from how I typically drive that it’s not worth all the extra for that small moment, I love my car the way it is.

  • @donsantana07

    As a mechanic who owns a 01’ GS-R, this list is not car specific so there will be exceptions. It’s not a one size fits all it’s just general stuff. The DC2 unlike the DC4 chassis was specifically engineered for track racing and mountain or spirited driving:) If your DC2 never sees a track and you don’t spirit drive it then you really shouldn’t mess with it, the Integra DC2 Type-R & GS-R were already perfect from the Suzuka plant in Japan. That being said, don’t cheap out when getting a wheel. Although no airbag, the OEM wheel won’t cave your face as bad or deform upon impact when you crash, the same cannot be said for aftermarket. Sometimes it’s best to stick with OEM but just know if you want better..it will cost you. Usually with higher prices comes better quality control but this isn’t always the case. It really comes down to the reputation of the company and what they’re known to offer. If this is too much for anyone then I recommend staying stock.

    @@donsantana07 you really didn’t need to write all that about the dc2 lol but anyways idk how well a 20+ year old airbag works anyway. But i don’t see an issue with my momo mod 78 wheel in my dc4 integra. But I do agree with the harness situation and how dumb people install them.
