    These are helpful tips. I DO shoot everything in S-Log3 and I use False Color on an external monitor for exposure. I didn't know about camera memory recall and the AWB Standard and White. I'll try that. I usually avoid AWB since the colors are off. I use an AWB Preset. I love the My Menu feature. Hi man, another great video, the white balance in one of the things I struggle the most with. Will try your setting for sure. Feed back for you: - Kudos for the graphic explainer on memory recall. Many KZreadrs just explain things and skip the basics. They forget that if people know the basics the would not look for help online. You showed how to do it in the menu and you show it on the camera body. It is small details like this that make your videos so viewer friendly. Off course being a photo demi-God I know about the memory recall :) - Great showing some tips that are good and then asking people to subscribe for quality content. Great pitch. Not the usual, asking people to like and subscribe at the start of the video when the viewer don’t even know if the content is relevant. Have a good and check your email

    Glad you like the video Not sure what’s up on Sony’s end with that LUT but I did provide 2 links (the second one should get you there) Regarding AWB, that’s normal. The AWB will shift the white balance as the scene’s lighting tones shift. This is fairly easy to correct in post with photos if you want them to match. For video, a lot of newer Sony cameras have AWB lock which will prevent shifting if you’re using AWB.

    With zebras you should be using the custom Zebras (C1, C2 etc) and use the zebra + range option to work out exposure ie skin tone 70 +/- 5 - which will show zebra lines only on parts of the image that are at 65-75 ire, If you only are using the zebra (limit) it is much more limited as everything over that zebra ire has zebra lines i.e. if you set you zebra to 70 then every thing over 70 has zebra lines so how do you know if its 71 ire or 95 ire?

  • @seandewispelaere

    Thanks for the note and I'd agree that is a more detailed way of looking at it. My usual rule of thumb that I get into in videos where I have the space to expand on the topic a bit it to bring the exposure up to the point where Zebras start to appear, then pull back by a click on the iso, as an example, and then the exposure is good. Certainly a topic that requires more detail than the semi-surface based nature of this video was. All the best and thanks for the great note.

    Some of this doesn't apply to the a6xxx series (apart from the a6700) i.e. if you use memory recall the WB is locked to what ever you set when you saved it and you cannot do a custom white balance or even change the white balance this makes the memory recall a bit limited,.

    Also any of the older 8bit Sony's should not use any of the LOG profiles because in 8bit LOG video skin tones end up with grey blotchy patches (with zero color information) and generally look pretty bad - general rule if your camera only has 8bit video then avoid log and use Cine 1 instead - slightly flat profile but captures highlights up to 109ire.

  • @kadencampbell4425

    @kadencampbell4425

    For 8-bit, I recommend using s-log2 for the gamma and rec. 709 for the color gamut. This gives you more dynamic range (not as much as the s-log3 gamma), but doesn’t reduce the amount of color information. To correct the footage, you can’t use a standard LUT anymore, you have to use DaVinci’s colorspace transform tool to correct the gamma back to rec. 709. The gamut is already in rec. 709.

    Good discussion here. I do think for 8-bit cameras that SLOG2 is viable and had good results with the ZV-E10 on that topic. I, however, don't have any issues using Sony's official SLOG2 conversion LUT in Premiere Pro (seems to work fine)..? @KDHildreth, regarding Cine1, I also like using Cine (particularly Cine2) but have had good results with SLOG2 as well with 8-bit color Good info, guys, thanks for this!

    @@seandewispelaere I Prefer Cine1 over Cine2 as they have the same gamma curve (they are are almost an identical profile) but Cine1 captures highlights up to 109 ire but Cine2 clips anything above 100 ire - so cine 2 will not allow you to pull back highlights above100% ire. The problem with using the official Sony S-log2 LUT in premiere is that it is made for video shot with 18% Grey recorded at 32% ire which is quite dark and with 8bit video, dark areas fall apart when shot that dark, the usual method of overcoming this by over exposing S-Log2 by 1 or 2 stops then has issues when using a LUT that is designed for a darker video and quite often highlights will be clipped by the LUT and become unrecoverable. There are ways around this, but i found Cine-1 was a acceptable compromise and gave up on S-Log 2 (in 8bit cameras) - of course non of this is relative in the most recent Sony cameras that film in 10bit (or older 10bit cameras like the FS5 etc).

    I'm not even being brand loyal here when I say the only 3 Panasonic shooters I've shot with are the ones making the most mistakes and using older cheaper kit. But does that even make me judge an entire brand and its users? No. Love Panasonics and it doesn't mean anything and this video is an extremely well put together video to remind people of even just one feature they forgot to go back and set up/utilise. Cheer up. It takes a stupid amount of time to make these videos for people to consume for free and take shitty shots at!

    @@petrolpoodle6617 Ah, this is the thing with text it’s very hard to read my tone, I’m very sarcastic and dry, this is just a poke in the ribs. Fully appreciate it takes ages to make videos, and Sean’s are very well made for sure. The mistakes felt brand agnostic though, none of them apply to Sony per se. And I say Panasonic users because they make the most fully featured cameras, albeit lacking good AF for a while - Thus if you’re choosing the underdog Panny, you’re alright by me 🤣 It’s not the cool choice right now, but the comeback story is gonna be epic! 🥊

    @@crystalpulseTV I absolutely love this reply and would like to apologise! Couldn't agree more by the way, I SO nearly bought two S5s instead of my A7iv's and was talked out of it because of the industry using Sony now as the standard. I absolutely would have been as happy if not more! They were half the price too!

    My Sony has got me quite a few jobs as it's the industry standard camera manufacturer. Never had corporate clients request anything outside of Sony. Best business decision I made as I've also shot with 90 percent Sony shooters. So easy using each others lenses/cameras for fast work flow. Don't be a frickin child about brand loyalty just because you like something else.

    Lol now that I have your attention, I need your help. Im a hobbyist photographer who is swapping from dslr to mirrorless and I can’t decide between the a7iii with a sigma 28-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f4 from Sony or the new a6700 with a sigma 18-50 f2.8 and the same 70-200. I shoot mainly street photography, portraits and just general photos. The a6700 is very enticing with its newer sensor, processor and technology but I don’t know if I will have buyer’s remorse of not investing in Full frame. Right now both system are the same price including lenses so that’s not an issue

    @@chump3888 you got me ha well played. Ok yea tough one there for sure. Some thoughts: - I ran the Sony a7iii for years - I haven’t used the a6700 but have a good idea of what it’s big features are - I don’t think you’ll need dual card slots so that isn’t a determining factor which is good - all things considered, and I think you’re thinking about the right things, I’d lean towards the a6700. It’ll have a really high resale value as will the lenses if you want to move to a full frame like an a7iv or something in a year or so. - I’d look at some of the Tamron offerings for lenses as well Just some thoughts, let us know what you go with

    @@seandewispelaere thank you so much! I totally agree. I have shot on the a6400 as a school photographer and felt no real limitations that the a7iii could really solve (mainly because I don’t think I shot a single photo without using the tightest focal range of the lens). The only problems I had with the a6400 was the bad menu, lack of physical dials and the way the screen til it’s which all gets solved by the a6700. Thanks for the information you have provided. This is the first video I have ever seen by you but this was so helpful.

One thing that I didn't mention in the video due to it being a newer feature on Sony cameras is AWB-lock. Enjoy that ;)
