    I had sciatica. I had back twinges for a couple of weeks, just took paracetamol to help kill the pain. Then one day at work the pain down my leg into my foot was excruciating. I only just made driving home. Lots of swearing, poor husband was on the receiving end. Reading on line, ha ha, I thought this is never going away. BUT. I saw that exercising the glutes helped. After being out of work for ages and sitting a lot, this made sense. So I started making my bum muscles work and I'm pleased to say, I'm going back to work next week. I am 63 by the way.

    Great video, there are a lot of conflicting ideas about sciatica on the internet that you must take with a grain of salt. My experience with sciatica has been trial and error, I suffer from an L5 disc herniation that has recurred multiple times over the years. For me, stretching or walking too much at the outset of a flareup is not a good idea. Your body needs time to quell the inflammation for a few days before jumping right into exercise routine, (how many days depends on you), not to say you should stay in bed, by all means stay mobile but do not push yourself through the pain, thinking that it will be beneficial...it will only exacerbate the problem, listen to your body. There lies the problem with a lotta of the advise on the internet (KZread) etc... Many people want a "quick fix" and take the advise on here at face value... there is no "quick fix"!! there are a many contradictory points of view, when it comes to dealing with sciatica, and unfortunately many of them either give misinformation or fail to take into account the rest period required at the outset of a flare up. Exercise, walking etc.. needs to be implemented slowly as the person recovers, not jumped right into, the minute sciatica appears, everyone recovers at a different rate. I too made this mistake in the past and was in a world of pain afterwards.

    I had Sciatica (diagnosed stenosis)that started 7 years ago and was increasing getting worse. I tried so many alternative therapies. I even did a a steroid shot because I was desperate…it worked for a week, then the Sciatica was back. A year ago I decided to do intermittent fasting for a different reason, within a week I noticed my sciatic started to feel better… I don’t know how and I hadn’t done anything else different. It’s been a year and I’ve been free of it. Until I went somewhere that I had to stand for 4 hours in one spot. Now it’s back and it’s been over a month and I’m doing what I did before (IF) but it’s not working now. I’ve been listening to you and I so agree on what you’re saying about the exercises that aren’t good as for Sciatica. I was given those types of exercises by”experts” that you say make it worse and it did. It’s so good to hear you say not to do them because sometimes I thought, maybe I need to just fight through the pain. I’m hopeful if I follow and do the exercises that you suggest it will eventually go away again…it has before. Thanks.

    Problem is, I have some stenosis but also worsened sciatic and Femoral nerve pain, worsened from falling down the stairs! So, although cobra might be recommended for sciatica, it isn't good for stenosis. Difficult finding the right exercises as an individual with specific nuances.

    Awesome explanations. I was convinced to take MRI by a chiropractor, for back pain and showing to him and others, they all seems so shocked. Some just want you to overstress on it, so you buy expensive plans on decompression machines.

    i am 35, suffering from sciatica pain since last dec. first 3 months my orthopaedic doc gave muscle relaxant and pain killers, the pain came back after medicine was over. I asked whether i should go to physio he said no. I did MRI march end, found out it is due to disc buldge. I decided to change doctor. The new doctor put me on MECOBALAMIN and advised to do swmming and core exercises. the pain has not gone and is worsening. He recently put me on vitamin e, steroids, multivitamin. he also advised physio not needed. i am confused. why is everyone advising against physiotherapy and should i continue this or change my doc again. more than anything sciatica is depressing!

    @@nirvanahllsblls6513 I am better but a lot happened. I got worse last week. More than the pain the anxiety was too much and my doctor kept saying my nerve will damage. Finally went to a physio who was not good. Then I went to an naturopathy doctor who did some adjustment in spine and immediately i felt huge relief. But this doctor was after a strong reco. My take on this pain is many many people suffer from this and very less physios and doctor understand the real things. Dont just go to any doctor. Ask for references and definitely you will find a doctor who knows this stuff. The problem is easy and can be solved easy by a good doc. and a bad doc will make it worse.

    That was so enlightening. I have a question. What help does traction do to the spine? I have disc desiccation L4-L5 to L5-S1.

  • @benjohnson5086

    @benjohnson5086

    10 ай бұрын

    This is from my own personal experience with sciatica caused from my L4-L5 herniated disc. Traction was the most relieving action for my symptoms. Basically traction is just stretching open your vertebrae and giving your discs more room to breath. This can be helpful for allowing bloodflow and healing to the area. However, it may not fix the problem, it did not for me. It made my symptoms better, but after 6 months of sciatica, I decided to get a discectomy to have the herniated part of the disc removed. I just don't think my body was ever going to removed that debris. I am now 3 weeks sciatica free and still healing. In short, I think traction is a valuable treatment tool, but it is not a guaranteed fix, just depends on how bad your bulge/herniation is. I should add, since you mentioned you have disc desiccation, not a herniation, that I would highly recommend drinking more water than usual. I have heard that when we are dehydrated, our body will leech water from our discs for other, more vital functions. Stay hydrated, and I could see traction as a useful tool for opening up those vertebrae, and allowing the discs to get bloodflow and rehydrate themselves.

    What's the difference between a herniated disc and a bulging disc? Are they the same?

  • @benjohnson5086

    @benjohnson5086

    10 ай бұрын

    This is from my own personal experience with my L4-L5 being herniated. A bulging disc means that usually the outer layer of the disc has not ruptured yet, and does not have any holes formed. Think of a waterballoon full of jello. If you squeeze it, it will bulge on the opposite side as you displace the jello, if you keep squeezing it to the point that the outer rubber shell forms a hole, the jello will shoot out. (Herniate)

    For the last 3 weeks, I have experienced both scenarios regarding "rest is better than exercise" and vice versa. First I herniated, which I think was the L5-S1 disc. Worst back- and sciatica pain I have ever experienced. But a couple of days later I could already walk quite a long distances without that much trouble. I had more pain if I was sitting or lying down. But 11 days after the initial herniation, I ruptured the disc. And this pain was beyond anything I have ever felt in my whole life. I didn't think it could get any worse than the pain I got from the first herniation. But yes it it could. The only thing that kept from going to the ER the first three days was laying down on the floor. Everything else caused unbelievable pain. So yes. Sometimes rest is the only option you have. Now it's been 7 days since I ruptured the disc. And things are slowly getting better. Now I can atleast sit down when I am eating, and walk 800-1000m without terrible pain.
