7. How I make a living as a full time potter

This video discusses how I make a living as a full time potter. I run my own production pottery business and sell across many platforms. I have a fair few expenses with my business and i go through all of these in the first part of the video.
I then compare my monthly turnovers in December 2023 and February 2024.

    I watch a lot of pottery videos and your video was the best I have seen on the business of making pottery for profit. I'm a hobby potter and at my age have no intention of turning my hobby into a business but I do get excited when some one offers me money for my work. Great video and I hope you still get a buzz each time you make a sale 😊

    Thank you so much Charlotte for sharing your knowledge. It helps me as a new potter to get more insight into the business side of ceramics. I’m a true believer of abundance and that sharing will create even more abundance. Hope it makes sense to you, but basically just wanted to say I love following your journey and amazing work.

    Happy to catch your video. I work in a two car garage with a couple of side buildings that have my kilns in. Some things are shared yet some words are so British, you remind me of Country Wood Girl.

    Hi, I love your videos. Could you explain about your degree please? I’m starting my ceramics degree in September. I’m a lot older than you so super nervous of what it will entail. Would love some insight on it. Anything that I could do now to prepare before starting in September. Many thanks and please post more content if you can ❤

    Is there a reason you change the kiln elements every 4 months? I have never heard of anyone changing them that frequently! That seems like ALOT!! I really love how you did this video. It’s so informative and straightforward!!! 70 pounds every time you fire the kiln seems like soo much!! I’m in the US and it costs me on average about 6.00 and I have the same size kiln as your smaller one. That’s crazy how much of a difference there is.

    Thanks for this video! I have a shopify site but on the fence with Etsy...do you list different products on Etsy than you do on your website? Like one-of-a-kind things, I guess I'm asking about. I think I have fear around juggling between the two. Thanks again for sharing!

    Hi! All of my products are listed on both my website and Etsy. I think having as many income streams is better than just one so even if you only sell a bit on Etsy, that’s still a bit more than shopify :)

    I wonder how you made the decision to get staff? Do you feel like having employees makes you less connected to your work?

  • @CharlotteManserCeramics

    @CharlotteManserCeramics

    I decided to get staff to allow me to do the jobs I’m most skilled at, (throwing) and they can do the jobs that require less skill (packing orders and glazing). I also needed help. I definately don’t feel less connected as I’m still the maker and I am involved in every step of the process :)

    @@angceramics That was very surprising to me as well. I know very large studios that fire. Their kilns every single day and they still don’t have to change their elements even close to that often. One place changes theirs on average of once every year.

    @micheledickey4066 Maybe new kilns are on the list for the studio upgrade? I would think they'd be more economical to run also.
