I'm surprised you didn't include a shot of Quelaaq's sister's corpse in DS3, further cementing how she died alone and afraid due to us killing Quelaag all those eons ago.

The funny thing about that is that she didn't exactly die alone. The body laying next to hers is that of Quelaana, another of her sisters. At least there was some reconciliation between DS1 and 3.

Actually she might not have died alone. In DS3 there’s also a corpse lying next to her. Which is more than likely the sister that you meet in DS1 that is on the dry patch in the swamp facing the entrance to quelaaq’s lair. She’s the one who faked her death and who the ceaseless discharge thinks he’s guarding. Because it’s dark souls so don’t expect any happily ever after for anybody.

The biggest guilt trip I got wasn't even from a game, it was from the console itself. PS2 used to have animated save icons in the early years. Games like Tekken Tag Tournament and Ridge Racer 5 had a character smiling and waving at the player when selected, but if you were about to delete the save, they would cover their face and cry. Made me feel like a right bastard for making room for other games! I can still remember that, 20 years later.

To make Quelaag's sister's story worse, IIRC she's severely weakened because she's been trying to lessen the sickness of the people of Blighttown. She's actually one of the more "good" characters in Dark Souls and now because of you shes left alone in the world. Monsters.

Made worse by the fact that you can find her corpse in Dark Souls 3. As someone else commented, she died alone and afraid because her sister and the person she thought was her sister if you took the Old Witch's Ring at the beginning of the game never came back.

Yeah, she's legitimately one of the most pure-hearted, unselfish characters in that world. Eingyi, the infected servant in the room with her talks about how she disobeyed Quelaag and took on the sickness in order to help the suffering people, leading to her being in the state she is. Also, it's possible to kill her, and Eingyi's reaction if you do is pretty heart-wrenching too.

A fun extra bit of pain in Hollow Knight comes after you've killed the False Knight, one of the first bosses you encounter in the game. If the death animation didn't make you feel bad enough, you can come back later to see the corpse has been taken to a hidden place by two of its maggot compatriots, who sit there mourning until you approach and scare them off. If you kill them, like I did for the sake of getting the Journal entry, they'll never respawn. After you beat the dream boss version of the False Knight, you'll find out that those maggots are essentially the lowest working-class lifeform in Hallownest who were subject to constant slavery, bullying and predation, and that the False Knight was just trying to finally protect his kind from that. Yes, I still lie awake at night.

Hollow knight must have a lot more guilt-trippy details than I realized because the first example that came to mind wasn't either your example or Oxbox's, but a completely different Easter egg entirely: the diary of Menderbug. Which solely exists to guilt trip you for doing the very thing that you were required to do in order to unlock it in the first place. Another excellent example is Revek's dialogue right after you've finished dream nailing all the other spirits in the Spirit Glade

@@kaiseremotion854 Menderbug is a little bug easter egg that appears if you break the sign at the entrance of the well - he pops up to fix it. Kinda just a cute easter egg explaining how the signs respawn every time you break them, they're being repaired. If you do your Descending Dark attack down the well enough times, eventually you can catch Menderbug in the attack and actually kill him, and it gives you a bonus Hunter Journal entry that isn't required for completing the Journal (I don't remember what it says, sorry :( ) And Menderbug doesn't appear again after that. After you kill him, if you go to the little abandoned town (where you first meet Sly) the house to the far left will now be opened. It turns out to be Menderbug's house, and inside you can read his journal. It's only a few pages, but it's basically this precious boi celebrating how happy he is in life and how much he loves his job mending - and even ends with him hinting at preparing himself to ask out the girl he's crushing on. So it's the totally happy and optimistic writings of a precious little bug that you just murdered for funsies, to either see if it was possible, or to get the Journal entry. And the fact that the house is locked UNLESS you kill him is just brutal.

Ever since I had to abandon my cats when my family had to move to another country, crying or mourning cats is one of the few things that always hits me where it hurts... And hits hard enough that I will quit a game or show or movie or book over it depending on how it's handled. I just remember seeing the faces of these cats we'd got as kittens when I was 8 and had raised as members of the family for nearly 10 years as we were forced to leave them with an adoption agency (not a shelter; an agency that would adopt them out as a group to a good home, so at least there was that slight saving grace)... The confusion and longing and sadness as they plaintively pawed at the glass door and desperately called to us as we left haunts me to this day, almost 15 years later.

So like, if it's a dealbreaker, then it's really just mission achieved in that case. Not every game is meant to be "fun", they're stories and art

Dismissing the Palicos does seem awfully heart rending, but it reminds me of my first true video game heartbreak: Nintendogs. It's hard enough sending your pups to a kennel, where they look all sad and drooped as they wait for you to confirm that you want to send them away. But god forbid you ever feel the need to give a dog up for adoption. They won't even look at you! You have to look at this depressed little dog, its head hanging, ears drooping, tail between its legs, turning its head away from you no matter which way you rotate the model, and consciously make the decision to say "yup, I'm giving this dog up for adoption." I don't think my heart has ever properly heeled from that.

I'm reminded of the Deathclaw ending in Fallout 2. Which, potentially through no fault of your own mind you, invariably ends with this community of friendly, sentient, talking deathclaws (one of which even joins you as a party member) being eradicated and you blamed for it. That's because there was a bug in the original game that made it so that the good ending for the deathclaw community was unattainable. Even if you did everything right. To make matters doubly worse, because of the bug when it came time for fallout new vegas the devs went with the Deathclaw genocide ending as nobody could have attained the survival ending and made it canon. A real slap in the face to anybody who _should_ have gotten the good ending for them made all the worse by the knowledge that you will never again cruise the wasteland with a talking deathclaw bro by your side.

In the gloomy world where everything is infected, sad and usually trying to kill you, seeing a friendly bug is a relieving sight, especially with the addition of humming and singing. Therefore it is pretty sad to see how she slowly succumbs to infection as you progress the game, with no chance of saving her and having to kill her at the end since she becomes a hostile enemy once fully infected (at least you have a choice here, if you decide to never visit her in the endgame, or just ignore her attacking you).

Oh man that planet coaster clip. It’s honestly the most heart wrenching one to me. Like, you can tell they genuinely enjoyed working there. Especially if you’ve designed a really nice and unique park, they probably thought themselves really lucky to actually have a job where they got to make other people happy. And now they’re fired, for no reason and they are forced to leave **instantly.** Maybe it’s because of the current economic climate but it just feels so bad to watch them leave, knowing they’re probably contemplating what they did wrong, the job they’ve lost, and how they’re to make ends meet. They helped make your theme park a magical place of fun and fulfillment where people could come to escape the real world and now they’ve been exiled to the very place they spent months of not years of their life helping people escape from. Why!? Why’d they need to put in those animations!?

Biggest guilt trip for me recently was in Mass Effect 2. I was going for all the romance achievements, so after romancing Liara in ME1 I romanced Garrus in ME2. After romancing a new character, though, when you return to your room the picture of your romance from 1 has not been simply removed, but flipped face down on the desk so it is STILL THERE tormenting you. After getting the romance scene (and achievement) I had to immediately reload an early save and break off the relationship with Garrus so I didn't feel horrible about Liara.

Depending on how many enemies you killed throughout the course of the game up to that point, more and more ghosts would appear in the spirit realm. This would not only increase the length and difficulty of the trek, but a lot of the dead enemies that are on the path have dialogue about how much agonizing pain they're in from what you did to them. All the while the Sorrow is taunting you about how it's your fault these soldiers are there in the first place.

The worst part of the alpaca scene in monster hunter generations ultimate is that for most of your playthrough, you don’t know how palicos work and don’t know that they all do things differently. Therefore you’ll just be sticking to two or three palicoes because you just assume they’re the same. Once you figure out how the whole thing works, you still have no reason to be running out of space because you can see all their merits on the hiring screen, as well as what they look like. The storage is also very generous. You will never run out of Palico storage so their is never any reason to let them go. The guilt trip really is deserved in almost any situation.

Another entry: Moira Brown from Fallout 3, who has not one, but _two_ ways you can feel rotten for ruining her life. Mercifully, both are optional. If you're not familiar, she's the general-store merchant in one of the first towns you're likely to encounter. This town, named 'Megaton' because of the dud nuclear bomb in the center, can later be destroyed by a quest chain that gives you the option to set off the bomb. Moira is surprisingly _not_ killed by the blast, but is reduced to a ghoul. You can still talk to her and buy things from her store, but while she's not too broken up by her horrifying new form, she's still definitely not happy about it. In addition to being a shopkeeper, she also fancies herself a scientist of sorts, and wants to write a wasteland survival guide. She's a flake and her ideas of how to survive are pretty bonkers, but she's cheerful, enthusiastic about her project, and she genuinely wants to help people. To that end, she sends you on a quest chain to gather data and offer advice for the guidebook. If you do the quests and have a reasonably intelligent character, then the book is a success, the quests give you a bunch of neat perks, and she is ecstatic that her plan worked out so well. However, you can ruin everything if you want. After a couple quests, it becomes clear that Moira has no clue what wasteland life is like even remotely, and you have dialogue options to confront her with just how spectacularly wrong her theories are. This convinces her to give the project up as a bad job. In my opinion, this is the absolute worst outcome, because poor Moira does _not_ take it well. Seeing her dream shot down leaves her absolutely crushed: her dialogue becomes depressed and listless, like she's just going through the motions because there's no point to anything. And, just to twist the knife, she _thanks_ you for this: the way she sees it, you stopped her from giving people bad advice that could have gotten them hurt or killed.

There’s Luigi’s Mansion 3. Here, you deal with Morty, a film director who has been hit with creative bankruptcy. You find him, he is super depressed. Wanting his red megaphone. And when you find it, Morty starts to make you a movie star! The sad part is if you decide to suck him up while he’s making the film. You can see his dedication to his craft and you interrupted him by trying to suck him up! You can hear his cries of despair as he knows he will never finish his project. This is if you decide to snag him before he finishes. After he finishes, he just sleeps peacefully on his chair, before you wake him up and suck him up

I’m basically going to put the entire Nier and Nier Automata games here. Spoilers: Nier is basically an entire game where you go around killing the what’s left of humanity but you don’t know that because they just appear as ghostly things to you. Nier Automata has so many side quests and main quests where you kill robots that are just trying to survive, only to find out you’re just the same as those robots and you were created to fight the robots by a pseudo consciousness of humanity. Oh you also end up killing your partner like over and over again because he is too smart and you’re real job is an executioner Android, not a combat Android.

You're not even getting into the details about the bosses, all of which I find quite sad. Engels was built specifically to protect the robots, and they act almost like a story-telling Grandpa in a particular side quest. Adam was, ultimately, just curious to know what it was like to be human. That's specifically what he was designed to do. Simone... We all know Simone at this point. The demented opera singer. A2 got screwed over again and again by Command, so she just went rouge. Eve was, as one should expect, incredibly angry at you specifically because you killed his brother, Adam. Jorgündor, or whatever his name was, was abandoned at sea and was basically a child. This isn't even all of the bosses. I've basically just covered all of the act 1 and 2 bosses. There's still the super depressing act 3

Details that made me feel bad: I can't remember the full conversation but my playthrough in Mass Effect ended up having a bit of drama. If you romance Liara in 1, then Tali in 2, you can only expect to hurt one of them in 3. There's a moment in 3 if you choose Tali then have her and Liara in a party for a certain mission an interaction will happen where they almost get a little hostile before Liara says she hopes you're happy with her. Sorry anyone like me that right Liara wasn't gonna be in the party anymore when first playing 2

I really love Monster Hunter World. Iceborn is a great expansion. One of the things that bothers me though, is the Palico cooking in Iceborn's canteen. One of them is kneading dough and baking bread. Great animation, but that said ... they aren't wearing gloves. Just how much hair does that bread contain? Lets not think about how much fur makes it into the rest of the dishes too. I said don't think about it! This does not keep me up at night. Not at all.

Actually, if you convince the Mayor of Edgewater to leave (either through diplomacy or by shooting him in the head) and divert power away from the Deserters' camp, you can then convince Adelaide to return to Edgewater with the Deserters and the whole town is better for it, no one is left stranded without power, the town is no longer strangled by the Board's capitalism and no one is dying from disease due to the only thing they eat every day is Saltuna.
