I'm not particularly good with horror in any of its forms, which is why I've never played The Last of Us xD but I will concur that the "zombies" in that game are pretty grotesque compared to the average zombie especially considering they are still alive. I can handle like, say, the zombies in Call of Duty's zombies side game, but when they get so distorted they don't even look human anymore (but still look human enough that you know they WERE human), that's when I'm like NOPE so that Guardian from Dead Space is a big "kill it with fire" for me

That “fungal plate” is the reproductive part of the fungus. It releases spores. Similar happens with real cordyceps fungi and ants (or other insects), except, at that stage, the ant is dead. Also, the real fungi make their victims climb to a high place for better spore dispersal. So, if The Last of Us was more realistic, those zombies would pay you no mind unless you got between them and a tree/statue/skyscraper.

@@mar_speedman I'd argue that the normal broodmothers (with the exception of the Mother in DAO:A) are more working on feeding/breeding instinct, not conscious thought. Darkspawn are infected (with the blight), they're definitely not alive as proper humanoids, they are usually mindless/instinct-based, broodmothers (and probably the rest too) feed on their former kin. I'd say they're adjacent enough to count as zombies :D

@@MrWaffel They're not mindless. Ignoring the awakened Darkspawn, even though their minds are taken over by the taint to some degree or another, they're still not mindless. Primitive, maybe, but they're still capable of thought enough that they follow tactics, wear armor and use all sorts of weapons. They're still similar enough to more intelligent zombies, mind you, but I was simply saying there's a distinction in DA between actual undead (Corpses possessed by demons) and the Darkspawn (Disease ridden creatures)
