    René Higuita averaged one goal in nine games at club level and one goal in twenty three games at international level. That might not sound impressive, but as most HITC regulars will already know, Higuita was a goalkeeper (altough calling him just a goalkeeper, would be doing him an injustice).

    All those honorable mentions but no love for Big Les Ferdinand. From 1992/93 through to the end of 1996/97 he scored 101 league goals in just 178 games. Overall he bagged 149 in his career which makes him the current 11th top scorer in the league. That 5 season period, during which he moved from QPR to Newcastle, was top quality. England were blessed with so many high quality strikers in the late 90's but never forget Sir Les.

Cruijff, Van Hanegem, Neeskens, Rensenbrink, Janssen. It was a ridiculous team that consisted of the best players of that time in the best competition of that time. (Dutch teams won the EC1 4 times in a row, Feyenoord in 1970, Ajax in 71, 72, 73 ). As good as Hungary was, they weren't better than the Dutch comparatively

    Tbh as a United fan, I wouldn't want Rooney to do anything differently about his game... His personality on the pitch and style of play was an inspiration... He would fight till the very last second of the game even through injuries and with painkillers, for each and every ball, maybe off the pitch he should have focused on his recovery and health more. But I wouldn't trade what he did and stood for, for any player ever. He made millions of us love football, If he wanted Shearer's record he could have got it, asking the manager to tweak his position and all but despite the rot that Glazers brought in, where we wanted a 20 year old Benzema but ended up with a 33 year old Owen or had to make do with Chicharito instead of Aguero. He pulled us on multiple times, sometimes on his own and not just with his goalscoring. All of that took a toll on him. But he'd still be one of the 5 greatest players for my club ever.

    I've always thought that Heskey gets a lot of unfair criticism. I've never seen him as a goalscorer as such. He was excellent at running defences ragged & opening up defences, allowing more prolific goalscorers an opening. He could also defend a bit too, not the first quality you'd be looking for in an attacker, but if you are down to 10 men, it's useful to have an attacker who is able to drop back into midfield.Of course, he would be unlikely to appear on anyone's list of greats, but he was a hardworking straight-forward player.

  • @r4h4al

    @r4h4al

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah people criticise him for not scoring enough goals but that is not why he was in the team. He was in teams like Liverpool & England to assist players like Owen & later for England Rooney & he did a fantastic job of that. For England he would often get double marked by defenders leaving space for Michael Owen or Wayne Rooney to score.

  • @eddixon2015

    @eddixon2015

    The best comparison I can make for Heskey is that he was the equivalent of a third down back in American Football. Yes, his stats weren't eye popping, but the amount of space he opened up for everyone else on the team as well as how versatile he was, made him an asset for every ream he played on.

    My list. For what it's worth, my top three on ABILITY alone are Henry, Suarez, and Kane. 1. Henry -- not much need for elaboration. 2. Shearer -- again, not much need for elaboration. 3. Aguero -- fantastic numbers over nearly a decade, multiple league titles. The insane strength of his teams goes against him slightly. He cannot be higher than 3rd, but cannot be lower either until Kane crosses 260 and/or wins a title. 4. Rooney -- unbelievable numbers when playing as a true 9, but the lack of elite goalscoring longevity goes against him. 5. Cole -- serially disrespected, elite numbers despite not taking penalties, multiple league titles. 6. Cantona -- poor numbers, but 4 league titles in 5 years at United, with the 5th title missed due to his suspension. 7. Kane -- elite numbers, walks into any PL team ever, and fantastic consistency. At age 28 and without a title, a huge chunk of his career yet to be written. 8. van Nistelrooy -- amazing numbers, ruthless finishing, but only one league title. 9. Owen -- hugely disrespected, one of the best young strikers in the history of the league. Unbelievable numbers until injuries set in. 10. Suarez -- undisputedly the top or second-best season by a striker ever. Unplayable, but obvious lack of longevity. 11. van Persie -- best striker in the league between Rooney (2010) and Suarez (2013 and 2014). Elite numbers for an average Arsenal side, and delivered a league title on his own. 12. Drogba -- not enough elite PL seasons to enter the top 10. 13. Bergkamp -- technically elite, a joy to watch, but his numbers simply do not stack up to the competition. 14. Tevez -- unplayable on his day. Happy to put him a little lower, in all honesty. 15. Fowler -- like Owen, underappreciated. Superb striker. 16. Torres 17. Wright 18. Hasselbaink 19. Vardy 20. Berbatov 21. Anelka 22. Sheringham 23. Yorke

    Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.

    I'll accept that injuries probably stop my idol making this list, and maybe (just!) overall ability but, for me, Robbie Fowler is always forgotten about in these lists. (At least Fowler got a mention!) Maybe "achievements" also stop him, but I've always hated team achievements (trophies) being used to measure individuals. A finisher as good as Shearer, more creative than many in the list, underrated with his head, both footed, amazing positioning for poacher goals, but also scored absolute crackers, unselfish. What a player.

    Andy Cole is top 4 PL striker ever. The guy is 3rd in the scoring charts (having never taken a PL penalty, I might add) - always played for the team and actually won multiple league titles. Don’t understand his omission, but Harry Kane’s inclusion?

    Kane is a much better all round player and played when the league is at its most competitive. In the 90s there weren't anywhere near as many foreign players so the standard was far lower which will count against Cole. Cole didn't really bring anything else to the party other than goals

I saw him play a few times, but he never struck me as this all-conquering god like so many people say. Anyway, perhaps a general GOAT list like mine is not really reflective. It's hard to compare a striker and a defender and say one was better than the other, as they have different roles. Maybe something like a GOAT list for each category (GK, DEF, MID, FWD)? But then you have players who changed role - e.g. MID to FWD, etc. It's hard.

    For me there is little difference between Shearer and Henry, mostly preference. They both started the prem at similar ages, starting at good sides. Blackburn had finished second, with Arsenal winning the league. Henry had an amazing fitness record, missing only 25 games premier league games in 8 seasons (sold in Jan). Shearer had three major injuries and missed 82 premier league games in the same period. Shearer had multiple managers at his time at Blackburn and Newcastle, and was famously dropped by Ruud G in the 99 season, where he only managed 30 appearances scoring 14 goals. Stat wise they're very similar. Shearer started at a faster rate, scoring 100 goals in 124 games. Having 150 goal contributions in 148 games. He had a better record to 100, 125, 150 and 175 goals. Henry went on to get 200 goal contributions in 209 games, compared to Shearers 225 games. Shearer had a record of 169 goals and assists in his first 169 games, before his second major injury. Shearer would go on to win the prem, top scorer of the Euros and a top 3 balon d'or nominee. Henry, would win the world cup, 2 euros, 2 premier leagues. The treble with Barcelona. Balon d'or top 3 coming second.

He was clearly talented and looked to be coming into his own towards the end of the season as well as the start of the next but he wasn't key to the title win.
