It's worth noting, regarding Beyond Good And Evil 2 getting greenlit for a sequel... The series was Michel Ancel's passion project, and he was the one constantly pushing for more of it to be made. And he no longer works for Ubisoft, on account of suddenly and immediately retiring from the industry mere days before an article released pointing out how he had been an abusive, hard to work for tyrant in his studio. This was off the back of many noteable 'incidents' regarding Ubisoft management being brought to public attention, going right up to the top. This all happened nearly 4 years ago.

As much as I love Beyond Good and Evil, a sequel never getting made is a blessing to me. @@OneWingedRose I've spoken to some people who worked for a support studio of theirs over in France and for many working in Ubisoft it's basically the equivalent of working in McDonalds until a restaurant starts hiring instead, or you get together to open a restaurant of your own. It's valuable experience in game development, but very few are seeing it as their end goal. I feel like that's becoming the norm with the AAA games industry eating itself alive having to push more and more monetisation to justify weirdly specific tech advances none of us asked for, hiring Hollyood voice actors and complaining how expensive games are to make and not realising that's their problem, not ours.

If a game is announced and has nothing to show with the announcement, and the first time you see anything else regarding that title is some sort of "we're working hard on this title!" montage in like a State of Play or something where it shows people at their desks working on 3D models, that game is either never coming out or will be garbage when it does. If a game is going well and coming together you have no problem cutting together 30 seconds of footage of cool things you can do in it.

I'd more advise to wait until you see actual signs that a game is coming out before you drop the hammer on that, tends to work out better that way then just going ape and "Instant buy" just because a flashy trailer with zero gameplay showed up.

The only thing worse than development hell and waiting through the Five Stages of Vaporware is its cousin, the "game in Early Access that with each passing update it becomes increasingly obvious that the devs have no idea what they're actually intending to do no matter what their 'roadmap' says." Sometimes this even persists past a 1.0 release that is such an obvious beta that the game's still in Early Access, they're just not saying it out loud. Looking at you, Timberborn, Travellers Rest, and Coral Island.

You're right, but I would argue 2 of these are different than the others. Namely silksong and prime 4. All the others had a decent amount of development behind them when they were announced. Those two, they were effectively announced *when development started*, and both have 5 years of development. Modern games frequently and typicallt take 5-9 years to develop; so we're only now entering the window of when we'd expect to see an initial announcement.

Say what you will about Todd Howard but Bethesda generally plays their cards close to the vest and it's to their benefit. And as an American Truck Simulator enthusiast, "they'll announce a release date a week before it comes out" is the norm for their state-map DLC. Which is too short a window because I want to put in for vacation time to do the community events on World of Trucks and get the prizes they offer for people who complete their personal goal the day the DLC comes out!

im sure its a fine line for them though. you need hype behind your game so that it sells big at launch. Also i am sure the bigger problem might be other big companies getting involved.. MGS 5 would have been way better if the ground zeros was built in, but the new gen coming out they wanted to show off a big title.. NMS had a small passionate development team, who made good (and exceeded their promises) and i cant help but feel they were pushed infront of cameras by sony to hype it all up and then pushed to release the product early. I wouldn't be surprised if some on this list released their trailer and there was some exec at a big corp made a randomly high number they wanted reaction feedback to reach, and because it didnt reach it then development was taken away

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf definitely also belongs on this list! it’s been almost a decade now since the last game came out, and all we’ve had since are teaser trailers /for/ teaser trailers (there’ll be a new teaser trailer coming out in summer of 2025 but that’s all we know!) and news of high profile leadership leaving or being let go from the project. Even the trailers that have come out have been incredibly short and shown concept art rather than any gameplay or even anything cinematic. By contrast, the first 3 games came out in 2009, 2011, and 2014 in quick succession (albeit with lots of crunch).

grim as it's looking, hearing that the KotOR remake was taken away from Aspyr like a cookie being taken away from a child that didn't finish their homework is such a relief in the wake of the Battlefront bundle debacle. Seeing Embracer set a studio and IP free instead of just throwing it into the meat grinder with the rest is a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. That was the game that taught me to love video games as a medium, as a story-telling machine. I so desperately hope the remake comes out, and sticks the landing. Edit: oh jeez VtMB2....... that first trailer hyped me up so much I nearly pre-ordered on the spot. Glad I didn't. The recent gameplay reveal was so discouraging, and the dislike ratio speaks for itself. A friend of mine recently streamed her first playthrough of the OG and it really just hit a certain kind of way how special that game was, despite the early-2000s jank and rushed ending.

That indicates that the following statement will be made with previous development cycles in mind. "Sequel will be out in 13 years". The joke here is that there's a long window between sequels in this franchise. Did you get that? I know it can be complicated, there were two parts to it after all. Let me recap. The first part of the statement modified the second part. The phrase "going by previous development cycles" means the second part of the statement is based on the premise of that first part. You forgot to mention that Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 has not only changed hands but The Chinese Room have apparently completely changed the narrative and direction of the game. What would have originally been a proper sequel to VtMB with a fish out of water newly turned vampire has now been morphed into the vampire equivalent of the Sole Survivor from Fallout 4. Now instead of being an underpowered newbie who has to learn all about the Masquerade you're instead a super powerful antidiluvian, complete with wish fulfillment powers too. They've been quoted saying things along the lines of wanting the game to feel like a superhero game with the level of power fantasy that goes with that. Personally as someone who was a fan of VtMB I don't have high hopes for the game even if it does come out. Not only do I think The Chinese Room are out of their depth making something with actual combat, but I also don't agree with the direction they're taking the game. Vampire the Masquerade isn't fucking Blade. You're not supposed to be some super badass capable of easily killing everyone you come across. The whole point of VtM is that even when you die shit stays the same, more or less and that the true struggle is to keep a hold of your humanity before that light gets snuffed out by The Beast entirely.

I swear, some game companies take a cue from Hollywood, and do what is called "IP guarding." The company doesn't intend to release a new game in that IP ever again, but they regularly make just enough noise so that, legally, they can renew/hold onto that IP, so they can sue anyone who makes something similar. I first heard the term "IP guarding" from an interview given by a retired Hollywood exec. He said the movie industry does something like that all the time -- a company or individual buys up an existing script, and then just sit on it, doing nothing with it. Then the owner of the script can sue anyone who tries to do anything even remotely similar. The defendant doesn't need negative PR, so 9 out of 10 times, the defendant is happy to settle out of court, hush-hush.

  • @roguishpaladin

    @roguishpaladin

    Ай бұрын

I don't think that's the case. Generally, IP guarding requires that you actually release something. Just announcing intent to do something with it isn't a firm protection. Plus, several of the examples here have no worries about a publisher hiring on a different studio - Star Citizen and Hollow Knight aren't IP that will expire away from the current holders. IP Guarding is for when you have a major bit of IP and want to work with it, but the licensor has stipulated that it must be used by X date. That technically could be true of the Star Wars and Metroid entries here, but both seem to be showing genuine attempts at development that don't work, after which the publisher moves on to a different dev team.

It was always that game WiLD for me, the one where you were meant to be able to possess animals and stuff? As an Animorphs kid, that was the closest to a shapeshifter game I thought I was going to get, and they still took it from me. It’s now at a point where it’s “probably” cancelled, but still, probably isn’t definitely. Now it’s also Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, because despite being promised a “massive update this summer” and even “potentially releasing late 2024/early 2025” I’ve long since learned not to get my hopes up. Guess it’s back to playing BG3 for me.

Eitr. i dont know what percentage of this channels viewers remember or care about Eitr but man i fell in love with that pixelated isometric (not technically isometric but close enough) nordic souls where you play as a shield maiden. the animation and the art was so simple and beautiful and the first time i saw it i think was in 2014 or 15, its been on my wishlist ever since. its a very small team maybe 2 or maybe 3 developers with other full time jobs but they refuse to do crowd funding or ask for money for this game. sometimes i check in to the subreddit and see other thirsty souls like myself asking stuff like 'is it cancelled' or 'do they need help'. sometimes they post in their discord confirming slow progress but honestly, i dont see it coming out. and if it does by the time it does, i think player sensibilities would have changed so much that it would do abysmally bad and that would make me sadder.

I’m most likely incorrect though…….. also, Team Cherry announces stuff every now and then, but it’s essentially “we’re still working on it” it would be nice to see something about Silksong, however, considering how great Hollow Knight was, they can take as much time as they need as far as I care.

Star Citizen's development timeline is truly an impressive failure: *It is now only 2 years from overtaking Duke Nukem Forever's development length. *Over $670 million has been raised to fund it. That's enough to make both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. *The entire DCEU came into being and was finished before SC was released. *The US will likely have had at least 4 presidential elections before SC releases. *The UK left the EU, had its monarch died of old age and will have likely changed PMs five times before SC releases. *Fredrik Knudsen of Down the Rabbit Hole released a video in 2016 discussing SC's protracted development. 2016 is now further away from today than it is from the start of SC's development.

My Time at Sandrock. 18 months in Early Access, regular story updates that all fit a coherent narrative, and the game was essentially feature-complete in its core gameplay loop on day one of the process (thanks in large part to a Kickstarter exclusive closed alpha test and the devs having polished the concept in My Time at Portia.) When it came out as a full 1.0 release in November of 2023, it was a stable (mostly; you'll still get a crash once in awhile just because the game is gigantic) 140-hour masterpiece of a cozy RPG. Honorable mention to Baldur's Gate 3, which even though it took six years of development and three of early access, still managed at every point to work toward its ultimate tour de force of a release. Not for nothing did both Pathea Games and Larian Studios get the "you didn't have to go that hard, you're making everyone else look bad" criticism from people in the industry who now have to actually work harder to impress players.

List idea. 7 childhood games we would love to play again, if only they worked on modern systems. I really, really miss ThemePark World, but it won't run on modern PCs seeing as it came out in 1999/2000. Honestly, it doesn't even need to be digitally remastered. Just give it to me, able to run on windows 11 without crashing or me having to find and download a patch another fan has made that might get it to work (or might install a virus, it's 50/50).

I don't think Silksong is "Development Hell" exactly, just that they're not rushing it and are a small indie team, so it's taking a while to finish. Taking their time is good, because with how great Hollow Knight was, I'm not sure anything else they follow it up with _could_ live up to that, so we fans all have unrealistically high expectations for it. They don't need to rush it out because of how well Hollow Knight has done, so they can take their time. I'd personally rather wait for it to be fully finished (and for my expectations to become more reasonable) before playing the sequel, but I'm not one of the fans who's made any predictions. I've avoided what trailers they've released about it so far, as I want to go into it as blind as possible when it's done. Statistically speaking, it's common for the third game in a franchise to be the best one for a super long time anyway... (aLttP, SMB3, MegaMan 3, S3&K, etc...) This is in part because after two games people tend to have better expectations, and because by that point the team usually knows well what they're doing with the series.
