A Generation of Nothing

Ойын-сауық

The 9th console generation is well underway, approaching the halfway point in fact...and boy is there very little to show for it. People are worried about the Switch 2's power but I'm more worried about the PS5 and Series X's libraries.
Let's talk about it.

It doesn't feel like it, it's just a fact. They clearly released them too early. Honestly ,they should've dropped around 2022. I remember several games being announced on last gen around the release day of current gen. Being a veteran gamer(35 years of gaming), this was very sus to me. The upcoming games were gonna be smash hits and would last for a good minute too. There were no actual 9th gen type of games announced either. The only game that ended up being somewhat of an actual 9th gen game was cyber punk. But it was originally made for last gen and the dev team just went a little past last gens tech levels lol. They announced a few actual 9th gen games 1 year after their release. Those games are just now preparing to release smh. I was smart to wait, there's no reason to get them now(or upgrade your PC). Except for a slight upgraded port that cost $10 more. Im still playing RDR2, pso2 ngs, diablo, and elden ring. On the slim 1TB xbox 1. Ive seen them on current gen, no reason to drop $300+ and pay $10 more for slightly upgraded ports. It's a waste upgrading your PC as well. The slim versions bout to drop(its about that time). $100 - $60 price drop, more built in space, improved systems, and actual current gen games. Or you can wait 2 years after the slim versions and get the slightly upgraded versions (you know they gonna do it)lol.

I mean it's been trending in this direction really even before 8th gen but now there's literally no good reason to opt for one unless you're just getting it as a Christmas present for your kid or something along those line's. The best bang for your buck is PC gaming and if you're into Nintendo's shit I suppose the switch is valid.

Nintendo's underpowered hardware has ironically saved them from many things ailing the industry right now. Making a game with a realistic scope in mind is important. 5+ year dev times and million dollar budgets isn't healthy or feasible for every game, and we're seeing the effects of that now.

This is exactly how Capcom utilized Monster Hunter. They knew they had gold in their hands, but most of the world wasn't interested. MH has always done very well in Japan, especially after the PSP ports. However, the global audience was pretty small, so they had the developers focus on cheaper consoles. Gen 3 and 4 were on Wii, PSP, 3DS, and even Wii U. MH3U sold much better on 3DS than the Wii U, so they kept Gen 4 on handheld.

@@HypeXesk Are you talking about the Switch? The cheapest version is $200 new and the most expensive is $350. The only thing close to that in price is the Series S and you're giving up all physical media to get that price. Handhelds will always be more proportionally expensive because they have to add things a home console doesn't. Screens, non-optical games (biggest hinderance of the PSP), speakers, etc. Sony and Microsoft also tend to sell their consoles at a loss. The Steam Deck is quite a bit weaker than a PS5 but cost about the same.

My only reason to buy a console is to play games that would otherwise be unplayable on pc. For example, the 3ds. Not many 3ds replicas out there, with the exception being the surface duo 2. But thats expensive compared to a used 3ds, and the 3ds is the intended way to play it anyway.

why is that sad? Its literally a gaming console. Much of the reason for these consoles not having a console based exclusive is because of how expensive these games have gotten over the years. People expect more and more out of games and then complain when it takes too much time to program these games or if a developer uses techniques to cut down on development (aka Spiderman 2 almost using the same map of the original). Either we should all be okay with Nintendo's strategy of smaller, less demanding games and indie titles that can be made on a budget and kicked out the door in shorter time, or we all should just be patient for the bigger games to come out every 5 to 6 years. Its not like we dont have enough games in our backlog that havent been played yet.

A big factor, especially for Sony, is the dogged determination to make nothing but AAA $200+ million budget type of games. Like, I'm sure the PS5 and Xbox Series would have a lot more to offer if they allowed themselves to make games with smaller scopes and smaller budgets, something akin to the development cycles of old. And they have the IP to do it, too! Get a Parappa, a Sly Cooper, a Syphon Filter, or a Banjo, a Blinx, a Blue Dragon a chance to shine. It doesn't need the fanciest graphics or the highest budgets. It just needs to be good.

Most of Nintendo games have lost all the fun to me to be honest. Nearly all of them are made for children and don't have a difficulty slider option for those who want a challenge. It stays popular because they focus on the younger generation. Current parents who grew up playing those games will support their kids due to the nostalgia aswell. It's a cycle. Now i'm not saying they don't have great games. I enjoyed Dread and the Xenoblades. BotW and TotK were fine I guess. They were outstanding for allowing you to do whatever the hell you want whenever you want and I still think they should be the blueprint for all OW games. But I still think Sony IS the gaming company for us 90's/00's generation. Outstanding story driven games with hardcore challenging options. Superb graphical fidelity evolution. Fun combat mechanics that stays interesting throughout the games. Amazing hardware for what you pay. Innovative controllers. And the proof is in the pudding. 7 years that Nintendo has been without a GotY. FromSoftware won 2x with their hard as heck games. Sony 2x aswell since 2017. And now Larian Studios with one of the biggest story driven games ever made. Set in a world with choices that I wouldn't recommend to Nintendo's target audience. Now... now you got Palworld. A pokemon game that actually took the leap and did something different. In 6 days it sold 8 million copies. In Early Access state. I hope Nintendo reflects about the future of their company and that while they can keep the same formula in some games and IP's they've got to try something different or they'll be phased out eventually.

Part of what allows Nintendo to have so many quality exclusives is the fact that their consoles aren't as powerful. They don't have to spend all the time and money it takes AAA companies to create ground-breaking photo realistic assets and and new physics engines for each new release. Microsoft and Sony could have much larger libraries if there wasn't an expectation for all "next-gen" games to have the production value of Hollywood movies.

The Switch’s hardware has pretty much forced developers to think outside the box somewhat if they want their games to stand out. Not gonna lie, Smash Ultimate and Metroid Dread are nearly 10/10 material (Prime Trilogy is more fun on Wii U although the Switch port of the original is well made) but there's so much tainted potential with Nintendo, they can't even get it right with publishing their back catalogues from the 80s and 90s which remain unchanged since being ported to the Wii VC so long ago. @@altonb.1396

Sony had such a banger of a library back on the PlayStation 1, 2 and even 3 days. Games were unique, varied and had a lot more heart put into them. They were also willing to take more risks in the mechanics they featured and subject matter they tackled, and many third-party developers provided to a truly diverse library of games. Nintendo is seeing success now because it has a more diverse library of games that actually focus on "gameplay" rather than cinematic fidelity which we have been seeing from the other consoles, especially Sony and their "movie style games". That and they also cater to younger gamers as well which helps sell their systems. Microsoft has only one thing going for it, and that is the fact that its Xbox consoles are backwards compatible to many retro games in the previous libraries. As someone who thinks older games were better, I see more value in the Xbox consoles as legacy machines for playing older games that again are mostly better than the stuff coming out today.

Literally if both have the same games on different platforms then why pick one over the other, they might as well just get a pc then, but pc is not exactly a solution since pc (while it has a lot of people ) isn't exactly the most inclusive thing you could get it requires alot of research most people aren't going to do and only pc people are going to care about specs. Consoles act as a nice accessible way to experience gaming without putting in a lot of effort and most people are going to want to just play the game so exclusives drive competition. What happens when you have no exclusive? You get a lack of confidence with the console, with both sides give very concerning comments like how xbox doesn't believe a game will sell consoles, or Sony saying there will be no major releases this year, like how is that good for both confidence and the brand loyalty fans?

I'm basing it off if what they are saying and how they are struggling with console sales and all the mass layoffs going in the industry (which may or may not be a technical thing rather than a video game thing). The best way to push units is competition, giving the consumer more value to their brand, and that usually means exclusives. probably a good compromise to this system would be timed exclusives so that way exclusives don't dominate the whole industry. It would reward those who have the console but not alinete those with the other consoles. I'm no expert on this field, and i wouldn't know what the solution to this 'dry' generation we find ourselves in, but hopefully, they find the solution, and they won't have to just give up and quit

A big chunk of the problem is that game development has only been getting increasingly expensive, with higher ups with ambition reaching as high as Mars and developers getting generally underpaid and overworked for the companies to afford the development of these games. Part of the issue is the stock market, with companies feeling pressured to produce smash hits rather than taking risks with smaller projects that might not pay off as well because they feel obligated to their shareholders. As a result, they're in direct competition with each other to make the biggest, grandest, most ambitious titles they can while also having to take as many cost cutting measures as possible to make it even possible to happen. It's getting so bad that even basic optimization seems to be getting skipped over, a big chunk of the reason for games releasing with poor performance. The 9th gen consoles would likely be performing a lot better if something could be done to address the state of AAA gaming in general right now, but for now it doesn't seem especially hopeful that any noteworthy change is coming.

I will point out that a huge part of how Nintendo was able to have such high consistency for the first few switch years is because of the Wii U’s failure. They did all the things Sony and Microsoft are criticised of this gen like cross gen releases and a huge number of rereleases from the Wii U, but because nobody owned a Wii U they were able to use a backlog of 5 years worth of finished games to fill any gaps in their schedule and everybody just saw them as consistent new games not less interesting rereleases. It’ll be interesting to see that their release schedule for the switch 2 will be like now they don’t have that luxury.

This generation of consoles comes down to having a Nintendo Switch and a competent PC, and you practically have access to all the games without restrictions, if Microsoft and PlayStation do not abandon the idea that a new video game console should only have a graphics card and more powerfull processor, I wouldn't be surprised if in the future everything ends in a Nintendo monopoly on the hardware while Microsoft and Sony only sell cloud gaming services on PC.

In light of Microsoft's announcement of over 1,900 layoffs across its' studios it is also worth mentioning another reason why Nintendo seems to be able to keep consistent releases of high quality games. They have an employee retention rate of 98%. Even when they were struggling with the Wii U they held onto their employees with the CEO taking a pay cut to make that feasible. If you show loyalty to your employees, they will want to give you their best in return. Something the Microsofts of the world could learn.

    - This console generation _launched_ in the middle of debilitating supply chain issues and labor disruptions. - Taking advantage of new features requires more labor while the quality of the labor available is falling plus the aforementioned rough start. - AAA gaming has been creatively bankrupt for at least a decade now. - Indie gaming has been on an absolute tear lately. - The PC has really had a heyday in the age of no console exclusives and indie gaming (plus it literally has a backlog you can still play on modern hardware going back to the 80s). - The destruction of game ownership brings with it the destruction of the need for a specialized box to play proprietary media you used to own. There's a whooooooole lotta reasons, but I think this or the next generation will be the last console generation as we've thought of them since the 80s. Both Sony and Microsoft have normalized this idea that your big system-selling games also have to be the most technically impressive and detailed things ever. It’s great to have those sometimes, but not everything HAS to be pushing graphical boundaries. Why do almost all of Sony’s 1st-party studios need to be making games like this all the time, exactly? There should be more than 1-2 notable exclusives every year I’d say, and you achieve that by re-thinking your priorities a bit. On the other hand, though, this generation has definitely also been impacted by global events like the pandemic in ways other consoles didn’t, and that shouldn’t go unrecognized. There is a chance that the back half of these system’s life-spans will be more robust.

Maybe it’s sheer luck, but Nintendo made a brilliant move with the Wii way back. The rush for cramming more and more power into game consoles hardly matters anymore when you can get those same games running 5 times better on PC anyway. The Wii, DS, and Switch sold well because they weren’t trying to compete with the rest of the market. It doesn’t matter that Nintendo can’t run some massive random triple A game at 60fps, or that it doesn’t support 4K. The Switch has Mariokart, and the Xbox, PS5, and PC don’t, and it turns out families are far more inclined to play Mariokart with their kids rather than a massive open world PVP RPG $50k AMV that people will write off as a disappointment anyways.

Anyone who has played GTA 5 or any big multiplayer game on a PC knows it's full of cheaters including aim bot dribblers, wall hackers and god mode melts. Its an absolute car crash on PC with cheat detecting software claiming over 70% of players have cheat mods of some kind enabled even if it's to lower recoil rather than straight up aim botting. In complete contrast to the nightmare it is on PC GTA 5 on PS5 is absolute heaven and it feels like the good old days after release before hackers completely ruined it for non hackers on PC. People also like playing on one homogeneous system. This guarantees someone playing on mouse and keyboard at max settings at 240fps with a super high refresh rate monitor isn't going to be matched with a last gen console player using a controller and struggling to maintain 30fps on a 60hz TV. Players on console can usually switch off matchmaking with PC players meaning one party doesn't have a massive advantage over the other anymore and research shows the majority of console players massively prefer it this way. This is what makes consoles so many peoples favourite way to game because being able to mod on PC guarantees this will be a massive problem that console players prefer to avoid 🎮

I guess graphics can always improve, but the cost and time required to make these games isn't worth the squeeze anymore. I'd rather have games look like Switch or even GameCube era, and have a booming AAA market with tons of games every year, than hyper realistic games that only release every 7 to 10 years, and often are littered with bugs. The games market has reached a point where they need to just focus on innovative games that play and perform well, rather than graphics. Switch is in the sweet spot. They just need better performance. I don't need Zelda, Mario or Pokemon to look more realistic, though.

He said "I feel that as time has gone on, there are a lot more games, but a lot fewer ideas about what can be a game." What is missing is new ideas for what can be a video game, like, new actual games that we have not played before. Too many games follow the "go kill things, take their money, buy weapons, save the world with the power of friendship" model, like way too many. At this point, it's very difficult to come by a new idea for a game, I suppose.

The Switch is a stroke of marketing genius. Consistent releases of exclusives, third party and indie titles; being able to play it as a handheld or stationary console; porting numerous games from the Wii U; placing a focus on gameplay over narrative; catering to gamers of all ages; & offering controllers from just about every console generation to use have made it a fun, highly accessible, and eclectic system (despite the hardware limitations). Contrast that with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which both boast about graphical capabilities and non-existent load times, but have a barebones library of games to back it up with. It's no wonder Nintendo's blue ocean strategy continues to dominate, even though their competition's consoles are vastly superior in every way. It's like a baseball team bragging about having a higher budget for the season, but not leveraging any of those resources to secure high quality players on the field

THEORY: In most cases, the PlayStation consoles were so popular that third-party studios didn't bother with porting their games to other consoles. This was prevalent with the PS2 and later the PS4. Games like GTA, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, etc remained "exclusive" on Sony consoles or released much later down the timeline for other consoles. With the industry becoming more competitive, a lot of these franchises appear on other consoles more often, and now Sony actually has to rely on their first-party offerings. This is why the PS5 lineup seems so slim compared to previous generations. And the issue is made worse with games like GoW Ragnarok, Miles Morales, and Horizon 2 also releasing on PS4.

It's been the case ever since PS1. In the PS1 and PS2 era lots of big games were sponsored by Sony, which in turn either got exclusivity in Western markets (many PS1 "exclusives" were also available on the Saturn in Japan, and in lots of cases the Saturn version was better), exclusivity on consoles or full exclusivity. Then, when both consoles got massive installed bases and dozens of millions of users, many devs only developed on PS1 and later PS2 because most of the market was there, development costs were soaring and portings required lots of resources, so the benefits of developing and releasing their games on other platforms didn't always justify the costs. In the PS3 era, with MS outspending Sony, they had to change their strategy and take a more proactive and involved approach to exclusivity deals.

I still have my original model steam deck and I often play 4-6 hours without it being plugged in to anything when NOT on 'max power modes' as many of the games I need don't need to run with max power. It's also usable docked just fine and I've used it docked a bunch to play stuff like mario party on my TV when I got people over, it's not like you can bring your playstation around with you and get more than 40 minutes of battery life (which is a rather low estimate as most of the systems run around 1-2 hours on max power unplugged) without being plugged in either. Also because it's designed well, the spots on it that DO get heated are areas of the system that humans will literally never touch. This goes for MOST handhelds like the lenovo legion go, steam deck OLED, etc. Comments like yours do remind me of the ones people had back when the console wars were a thing though (taking the worst possible scenario and pretending like it's the standard for a system), which further strengthens my beliefs.

@@Sizzyl I think the handheld PC systems are cool, I've researched them plenty, but they are expensive and still ultimately a bit weak (although that can be alleviated with upscaling tech like FSR, VRR, and what not). But yes, if you're playing the latest and best games on as powerful settings as possible, your battery life can literally be as bad as 40 minutes. They still need a generational leap in power+battery efficiency. The Steamdeck 2 will be amazing whenever that comes out, as Valve has said they're waiting for said generational leap in hardware. Also funny enough, I actually just got a Playstation Portal. I haven't used it yet, but if it works well for me, then that could be one of the best handhelds ever (some say it is). Baldur's Gate 3 at 1080p 60 fps. Now it's remote streaming, so there's a huge caveat there, but I think mostly any single player game should be super playable for most people. It does have much better battery life than dedicated handhelds, vastly better controller (it's just a dualsense with a screen), etc.. So it has its own benefits. It's an interesting compromise/idea of the handheld.

I need a good and safe carrying case system for my gaming pc(about 30kg) as we tend to have quite a lot of gaming lans. Its quite a pain in the ass to (partly)disassemble, move and then assemble again all that stuff. It along with some compatibility/external devices/wireless devices issues are the worst aspects with pc gaming imo compared to consoles. Otherwise i have yet to run into major problems with pc gaming, well theres the budget issue. You can buy a cheap gaming pc, but if you want a new spesific looking and higher spec pc, you likely wont get that cheap. You likely have to wait for some parts actually to even be in stock and then wait for their arrival. And while some might say to that, just search all the time for lowest prices and special offers from all sites of the world, and thus you can buy a new cheap gaming pc. Then you are spending lots of time and energy into that work, and it is like work, while you could be playing right there and then instead if you used a bit more money. And its quite risky and inconvenient to buy stuff that is example 50 euros cheaper from other side of the globe if/when there are troubles with either shipping or the product itself. Let alone with warranties etc. All in all i would advice sticking to more local/closer and established actual shops when it comes to buying separate new parts for assembling gaming pc. Even if some of the parts would cost a bit more. I have at least find it convenient to return some parts if i didnt like them for reason or another to a closer by shop/business no questions asked rather than to send via returns and then waiting for weeks what will be their response and if it even arrived. And if they would accept no questions asked, then waiting for my money to return. Its very tedious imo.

Videogames are riding on the same wave, people are more engaged (and addicted) if compared to previous generations. Saying that, I do think it's only a matter of time for both Sony and Microsoft to simply settle down at the next console generation, just marginal improvements to technology. So if a game like FF16 took 5+ years to make, FF17 in the PS6 generation will look pretty much identical to FF16, but it will take 3 years to make instead. And so on, as the tech reaches a threshold and the scope of the projects diminishes, the sustainability of the "triple A" will improve a lot, maybe we will go back to the PS2 generation (the golden generation imo) were you had four Splinter Cell games being released in the same console cycle, the devs were able to release a triple A title like Splinter Cell every year (I guess the actual development cycle took 2 years, following the original game). At the current PS5 standard, if Ubisoft was to make Splinter Cell again with the fancy new light effects (the ray tracing shenanigans), cinematic scenes and so on, then port this game to PC, etc.. that would take 5+ years, which means one game for the entire console cycle

The one thing you got wrong is the Wii U. It has a great library of games which were all overlooked by the gaming press because it was the popular thing to write about. The public overlooked them because nobody had ever heard of it. None of my casual gaming friends ever knew what a Wii U was. But if you look back, what wonderful games it had! That said, you really hit the nail on the head. When you compared where the Switch was at three years and where we are now, it was a very good point.

Yeah, the attitude towards the WiiU is quite dumb. It is largely obsolete but like...most older consoles are, it just hit the U faster because they ported nigh everything over and closed the eshop. It is also majorly funny to have people say "man, how bad the WiiU lineup was, luckily the switch has *lists enhanced or sometimes downgraded ports of games that were on WiiU*". Even the major systemseller at the start of the Switch originally entered development for WiiU and actually made slightly worse because they remoddeled it to be cross-plattform rather than highly optimized around the WiiU's hardware like originally intended.

I commented on this same thing. Many of the popular games people love on the Switch were designed for the Wii-U. The video creator even mentioned Breath Of The Wild. I've played both versions, and the Wii-U version is so much better. Along with Hyrule warriors and there also was Wind Waker HD. That's just the Zelda games, there were many other great games like Lego City Undercover. The experience with the Wii-U game pad was one of a kind, and many don't realize the great and unique experience they missed out on.

@@lpfan4491 BotW is better on the Wii-U because the gamepad acted as the map. Also in addition to this, there are several shrines that were designed for the Wii-U and were fun on the Wii-U. You would have the game on the tv, and you would use the pad/controller to tilt and control the puzzle. Every time I've run into these on the Switch version it just takes me out of the game play and kind of ruins the experience because I have to stop what I'm doing and go switch to handheld mode and then do the puzzle which doesn't even act the same on the Switch handheld and was much better on the Wii-U gampad. It's kind of jarring when the game forces you to go from one screen to another. While the Wii-U worked in unison with the TV. It's also why I believe Hyrule Warriors is better on the Wii-U. I had so much fun with that playing co-op with my brother. I tried playing it co-op on the switch, and the stretched split screen just wasn't the same as having one person on the game pad and one on the tv.

yes thx for bringing this up. 9:00 I guess he didn't know that most games he showed that the switch got in his first year were ports from the wii u with some upgrades. hearing him talk about that he doesn't like how new games still release on both old and new consoles funny.

The gaming industry is so uninspired nowadays. The art design is so lowbrow, stale gameplay, and none of these giants want to fund anything visionary. This general attitude of always reaching the financial bottom line is leading the industry into stagnation. Meanwhile, Nintendo understands that good art design and gameplay will always transcend the hardware.

Welcome to how I feel when Sega essentially died creatively after being bought by Sammy. I feel that, more than anyone, Sega largely pushed everyone forward and their absense is sorely noticed. I like Nintendo and they have always been solid on gameplay but their art design and presentation never matched Sega's caliber. Nintendo has had nothing like a Rez, Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Illbleed or Skies Of Arcadia. Oh yeah and there was "Madworld" and "Pole's Big Adventure" as well as "Segagaga".
