I lived in Refugee Camp in Syria from 1988 until 1999, all those years I played soccer but no good nutrient no without, no gym just play futball everyday, when I moved to USA in 1999 I played for higher school and some college but I was missing the big pieces to the buzzle which all the ones you mentioned. Today I really enjoyed learning from this video to try teach my 4 years old son and make him a better player hopefully. Much appreciate it

Doing a lot more ball mastery and being more technical is something I wish I focused on more as a kid, the players from countries like Brazil and Argentina spent all day playing small spaced games and always having a ball at their feet, and it really shows with the amount of skill they have now

You forgot the exercise Ronaldinho and Messi were doing when they were kids.... Dribbling across their house! they literally dribbled past the chairs, the tables, their moms, their walls, etc....I did that and I ended up being more comfortable and accurate with my dribbling abilities on the pitch. And also I would say that in those 4v4 or 5v5 you should try to play with maximum two touches -> increasing the vision, the positioning, the ball control, the decision making and the essential one touch passes ability.

Can you come to my club and rattle their cage a bit? I'm a volunteer parent coach...we just started some basic sessions last week to get the kids out, and the drills were no different than what I did in 1987. I asked our trainers about rondos...they had no idea what I was talking about. This is perhaps the best training video you've put out. I played travel/select in the 80s, and everything you say is spot on. Aside from exposure to the first wave of Coerver coaches to hit the US, which did help me immensely, I also wish I could have done more (much more) of these activities that you list. I ended up being a good 1v1 player who could juggle the ball a 1,000 times, but never developed that intuitive sense and quick thinking that rondos, futsal, two-touch juggling etc. would have fostered. It saddens me in a way that you, who are almost 20 years younger than me, experienced many of the same limitations that I did. Nobody in the neighborhood to play soccer with informally, and too many coaches emphasizing the wrong things. No wonder we struggle a bit in the US in producing world class male players...our grassroots is still systematically flawed. I still play in my mid 40s, and as the athleticism and fitness inevitably erodes with age, you need to rely increasingly on your skills and positional sense. Most of the guys my age and older who can still contribute grew up outside of the US, and it is all due to the fact that they are so comfortable with the ball and know where to be at all times. Pass to them, and they will know what to do with the ball. Make a good run, and they will find you.

Wall ball #1…you can do it anywhere and tons of touches. As an elite American player in the 80’s, I had difficulty finding players who wanted to play daily. Free Play #2…no pressure, super fun and a catalyst for creativity.I didn’t find futsal until my mid 40’s. That’s a blast. IMO..great content.

Great info and one I will share with my kids. I agree with you 100%. I have been coaching now for about 22 years, and from the beginning I saw coaching styles of many other coaches, many still had that old school mentality of conditioning and doing many warm up, stretches and other drills without the ball. I came up in that school, and truly as a teenage I hated just running, so since my early coaching start, I began to incorporate the ball to all aspects of the game: from warm ups, stretches, sprints, long distance jogs (labs), to mental and strategical games (tic-tac-toe, soccer chinese checkers, soccer-bowling, duck - duck - goose, etc.... many which I have made up from regular kids games. The goal is to work on all aspects of the athlete and to work on vision, first/second touch, positioning, motor skills, and physical aspects of the game. For a kid needs to practice, exercise and play as much with the ball and feel comfortable with it, in all pressure and non-pressure situations. As part of my teaching philosophy I created a curriculum " StartSmart + StartRight = Play SmartSoccerRight!" which incorporates all the topics/ workouts you discussed. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Rondos , wall passing and two touch passing are key things that helped me! Only hard part is finding another player. And if you do find another player don’t let them give you simple balls that arch in two touch. Direct balls to help you learn to kill the ball and still have control! It will help you a lot in the long run !

This video is a real inspiration and life-saver for me. I was training, just trying to get better at ball mastery and the session didn't go too well. I was so disappointed, sulking on my chair just looking at the odds of me not making it to the pro level and just giving up even though there was a side of me telling me to believe in myself. Eventually, I read your Reddit chat and my oh my was I motivated. I got up and tried the drill I failed at one more time, this time with music and I nailed it. Because of that training session, I came to this video and it really enlightened my perspective on what to prove in my game. Thank you so much✊🏾

Imagine start playing soccer at the age of like 17? And then the next year be the best player in the world. I’m talking All the trophies you could possibly get!!! That would just be mind blowing!!!

Just wanted to say how much I can relate to your background. I grew up in a small farm town in the late 80s through the 90s and I was one of two kids who really had an interest in soccer. We had parents as coaches up until high school and even then we couldn't keep the decent coaches longer than a year before they went on to bigger and better things. I am truly inspired by everything you've been able to accomplish. If you're ever able to go back in time, look up my child self too and set him straight.

man you really have your self analysis dialed in. I've been watching your stuff for a few years now and always knew you had the beastmode mentality, ethic and passion for the game, which reflected in your physical abilities on the pitch (barring the bad injury etc), except that instinctive advanced-level fundamental soccer shit just honed into your core wasn't there and I've seen it in your footage but honestly see it at USMNT writ large. And I think what happened to you in regards to being reared as an aspiring American soccer guy is a similar experience to so many of us American kids. A lot of us played rec soccer but very few of us ever played the game at or after school. Like ever. I know exactly what you mean when you talk about this and I think this is incredibly important information that you could share with American soccer associates/coaches/whatever. Americans do not understand soccer on a fundamental philisophical level nor even an advanced technical level, i mean really... We shoot PK'S and practice rainbows growing up but we sure as hell could not articulate the pros and cons of a 4-3-3 or for that matter execute these incredibly important drills/techniques bc we were weaving in and out of cones and running ladders or something. lol. Like, I literally said, "I bet he says Rondo in there somewhere" and it was literally the first thing. I AM NOT SURPRISED! It is our shared American experience. Your articulation of some of these matters indicates to me that you have a good future in football on and/or off the pitch if you choose. Sounds like you should just rondo your balls off and work on all of these things more then other parts of the game on a personal level. Just my opinion. Probably what you're already doing, obviously. You've achieved a lot and I wish you happiness and success my dude, you are doing going things for soccer in America regardless of your personal accomplishments, of which there are many to be proud of. I hope to coach one day and I would want the kids to understand these things you have described, amongst other things you've brought up on this channel. I would want them to understand what their role is in the context of the formation that actually suits their talents and abilities vs. just a placing of people in positions to play the equivalent of soccer atonal jazz solos for 90min. Anyhow, keep pluggin away dude, wish you well.
