Terminator 2, Empire Strikes Back, Sister Act Back in the Habit, just a short example of movie sequels that are arguably better than their preceding films.
And like the film industry, there's been no shortage of video game sequels, infact entire development companies and publishers have been built up from just these alone, with series like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and Leisure Suit Larry. And some of these have been good, others not so much.
So I thought I'd go and take a look at 7 sequels that I think are disappointing and because I'm a douchebag who's obsessed with first person shooters, I'm going to limit it to that genre.
I want to clarify that I don't necessarily think just because a game is a bad sequel, that makes it a bad game as well. By and large the games in this list are bad because they either don't carry across what was good about the prior game, or aren't of the same standard and worse off for it.
Before we start I just want to clarify again that this video is just my opinion, so if you're going to watch this video and don't think you can handle that, then maybe just stop right now. Save yourself the aggravation.
So if you can deal with that and you got the marbles to press on, let's get into it.

I LOVE the serious sam series and have played them all many times over. Most of the hate for SS2 is from people who cant get over the childish graphics. Their loss imo. If you look past the graphics and silly characters, the gunplay and environments in Serious Sam 2 are awesome. The level variety, the world specific enemies, plasma gun, grenades (huge pro - grenades are perfect for wave enemy games), vehicles etc all rock. It's got some of the most difficult sections in the series and the bonus levels are just nuts.

I feel like it's one of those games that anyone who owned a 360 as a kid remembers very fondly. Serious Sam was a bargain bin game, which I remember plenty of their ilk on PSX as a tween in the 90s. Indie wasn't as possible as it is today due to the need of physical copies, so bargain bin games were important for us poor folk back in the day lol. I didn't play Serious Sam until this year, I was told they were 3D relics doing a bad Doom/Duke impression - which couldn't have been further from the truth lol. The gameplay feels less FPS than any FPS ever made, they're really unique!

I completely agree. If anything, the sequel seemed to take the elements of silliness present in the first game (screaming headless enemies? Scorpions with machine guns for hands?) and expand upon them. I think The Second Encounter is honestly where the series started to develop its personality anyways, so to compare Serious Sam 2 to The First Encounter is analogous to comparing Timesplitters Future Perfect to Timesplitters 1. Impressive for the time maybe, but hardly the defining game in the series.

I'd argue you're somewhat wrong about Medal of Honor: Warfighter. The developers at Danger Close made immense strides in capturing the real weapons, gear and attachments special forces use in their operations. Everything asset-wise is based on some sort of real world equipment. The game itself is definitely generic, but it also attempted to branch from boring arcade shooters with tactical authenticity. Not realism, but authenticity, which is the staple of the franchise. The weapons, uniforms, dialogue, and some of the tactics (especially room clearing) were made to pay homage to reality. The sad thing is that the release product was a neutered version of what once was. EA and Danger Close got in a lot of hot water with their military contacts early on and had a mighty hammer slammed down on them by the US government, mostly in relation to mission details being too close to the likes of actual SEAL deployments. One of their consultants was a DEVGRU operator that participated in the Bin Laden raid. Danger Close was doing as much as they could to honor the soldier, but they flew too close to the sun. Realistic missions and tactical mechanics were removed to appease them but aspects like real licensed weapons and attachments remain. This is why mechanics like the "long" reload animations are in the final build. The animation takes into account magazine pouches on the plate carrier which adds another layer to the reload. tl;dr Medal of Honor: Warfighter has a lot more going for it as an authentic simcade shooter than most give it credit for and the game itself has a much more storied backstory than the public knows. SergeantMerrell did a great dissection of the situation back when the game came out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGihtrJxqMnJm5c.html

notverysubtle I was gonna say the same thing! Not enough people give warfighter and 2010 credit. And frankly, at least for me, knowing the historical context of the operations and knowing you’re based on real people made the story a little less generic. Still has a small but loyal player base to this day.

MOH 2010 was an somewhat unbiased and historical account of Afghanistan’s early days, and that being [WE FUCKED UP AND PEOPLE D I E D] In addition to doing their homework on how USSOCOM operated at the time the story was a cautionary tale on how bad intel and poor communication with the locals can be a death sentence when dealing with an enemy like the Taliban. It’s a lot smarter than people gave it credit for. Warfighter on the other hand was cringey, contrived, and unrealistic patriotwank that wouldn’t have felt out of place as a gritty team America world police reboot, cartoon terrorists and all. Totally missed the point of the first game in tone and pacing. (Seriously, what was the fucking point of the captain Phillips mission? Why?)

It was much gritter than he still relatively campy originals, in both the amount of violence and strong language, as well as it's art direction and visuals. 3 has a much muddier color palette than the last two, and a lot of the camp from the original \s is absent. It doesn't ruin the game at all, but it is a very major tonal change.

Back then we had no internet so we only found out about it via videogame magazines imported from the US every now and then so the excitement and hype build up was really intense... I remember the awesome pictures and interviews bragging about the improved gameplay, master horror music and theme, and the like. But when the moment to play it came, it was an incredibly underwhelming experience compared to its 'better and crispier' predecesor 😐 Broken difficulty curves, less complex and more lineal levels, and ineffective weapons to mention a few. Interestingly enough, I now believe the whole game could be turned into an amazing comic or graphic novel. Also,1:33 I died 😂

Kindergarten humor isn't what everyone would enjoy after first one. It's like, you serve people a nice plate, but then give them babyfood next day. I'd like games to have gritty and serious tone, but also have comedic reliefs here and there, tossing whole "serious, not serious" theme around in balanced way. And comedy should have more thoughts put into it, not bunch of first grade poop jokes. I think SS3 did a good job on this. Humor was good, and it wasn't taking itself too seriously like some say, because one liners and cutscenes would always break that to remind you that you're playing Serious Sam, not COD.

First encounter appeared quite serious though if you read through netrissa's messages, while Second encounter was lot more silly, but still on enjoyable levels. @melaniel.4269

    5 жыл бұрын

No. For a variety of reasons, that's not the case. Sierra wasn't that well know until Larry became (in)famous. King's Quest 1 and 2 were actually extremely bad selling games, because they were originally only released for the IBM PC Jr. which was a monumental failure. And Computer games at that time simply weren't big sellers because the market was very small. It wasn't until 1987 when those 2 games were released for IBM PC & Compatibles (DOS) that they started to sell and made the franchise a success. The best selling game in the 80's in the series was KQ4 released in 1988 selling a total of about 300.000 copies. King's Quest only really exploded with the following games, that sold a lot (King's Quest's total sales until march 1996 were about 3.8 million with 7 games) Space Quest actually never was that big of a seller. Until march 1996 the entire series (6 games) only sold about 1.2 million units. Which is the same number Police Quest achieved until 1996 but with just 5 games (the first Swat is included and that was still a relatively new game at that time) Leisure Suit Larry sold 250.000 within just the first 6 months on the market, even though inital sales were low since most shops in the US simply refused to carry such a "obscene" game but word of mouth and massive piracy (As Ken Williams later stated, Sierra actually sold more Hint Books for the game, than the game itself) made the game extremely well known and helped putting Sierra on the front of Adventure games. Total sales of the first 5 (as famously the 4th game was never made) in march 1996 surpassed 3 million units.

I'm not as big of a fan as I used to be, but his reviews have some sort of substance and I think the lack of personality sells it because you'll have channels like those countdown ones where the guy will sound bland or on crack, and Ggg's lack of distinctive personality makes his channel good to watch whether you're doing work around the house or not.

Glad you mentioned MOH: Warfighter. When I first saw it I thought it could be cool with all the badasses of counter-terrorism coming together both in story and multiplayer but it was just such a letdown. I agree the shooting felt off and the chase scenes were grating but you didn't even touch the multiplayer's issues. The gun customizing system was confusing and annoying to the point I left them all as I got them and just tried to deal with it. Then the nonstop lag and other issues just killed it but turns out there was more to the story. Some of the problems came after when the military support (consultants and such) got pulled due to supposedly revealing too much actual Tier 1 unit classified information to the developers as well as flak from anti gun groups due to all the guns and such being actually made things and 'influencing pro gun attitudes'. There was more and I found a great video on it but can't remember who made it. If all the problems hadn't dragged it down, I think they could've salvaged at least the multiplayer but sadly it bit the bullet fast.

I agree with all the criticism on Blood 2, yet I enjoyed it in a nice and relaxing way. It was definitely not as wild, creative or awesome looking as the first, but fun enough.
