7 Day Wash N Go Routine FAIL 🙈 | Type 4 Hair

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A week in my natural hair wash and go routine on type 4 hair.
I’m no expert on wash n gos. For most of my natural hair journey I avoided doing wash and goes for two reasons: shrinkage and tangles. Over the years I have grown to love my shrinkage, but my curiosity over whether wash and goes increase single strand knots has grown. Also, are wash n gos a practical low manipulation hairstyle that can easily incorporate into anyones life?
Today, I’m taking you through 7 days of my wash n go routine as I test out new techniques in an effort to increase moisture and decrease product buildup and scalp inflammation. We can learn together!
SPOILER ALERT: This was a FAIL…But we can learn from fails too.

I'm telling you " Mini Pineapples" put your hair in like 4-5 loose ponytails. It stops the hair from matting at the root and smooshing on your head at night, stretches the hair and you still have curl definition esp on the ends. THANK ME LATER lol 😆

Omg this is such great advice! I've been putting my hair in 2 loose puffs under my bonnet at night. I'm on day 4 and the shrinkage isn't too bad. I dnt have any matting at the roots. And I dnt think the knots are any worse than a twist out. I think she's right about ppl not liking the shrinkage 🤔🧐. I stayed away from wash and gos for years because of talk regarding shrinkage. I tried banding my hair but I dnt like how it looks or feel. It's like the hair bands soak up the moisture in my hair and dries it out. So the mini pineapples are a great idea. I'm going to try 5 tonight😁

THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I’ve come to notice that many naturals only show their day 1 or 2 hair and not the entire week. Then when I try it my hair is dry af and feel alone. This is a very realistic look at what our hair is really like and how it can behave. I appreciate this!

Few things that helped me perfect my wash n go after hating them the first 9 years I was natural (kinda lengthy) First though, hair deets (spongy texture, 4b curl pattern with some 4a, low porosity, mainly fine and medium strands, high density) 1. Wetline is the best gel. Hands down 2. My hair turns out 100000x better when it’s NOT done on soaking wet hair (I know, sounds crazy) because the gel sits on top of my hair (low porosity) if my strands are full of water and leave in. 3. After shampooing, When it’s time to style: I break my hair down into 6 sections while my conditioner is sitting in my hair as I shower (Mane Choice Cheers Conditioner + Suave Coconut = protein/moisture balance and helllla slip). With each section I do the following: A) Thoroughly rinse out the conditioner from the section - split section in half and finger detangle while conditioner rinses out- repeat on other subsection B) ring out ALL of the excess water from the entire section C) Apply a quarter size amt of the Mane Choice Leave In (Original 3 in 1 conditioner) D) Break the section into 2 and apply the gel from root to tip -avoiding the scalp- and shingle instead of finger comb. I literally just allow my hair to show me where the curls want to break apart and I smooth that curl down. E) Repeat on the whole section F) repeat on entire head 4. Sit under the dryer for 45 mins 5. Spray a little oil sheen on hair - the oil will help to break the gel cast but if you want it to last 7 days without getting too soft don’t do this step 6. Blow dry/stretch the roots in sections (usually only takes 20-30 seconds per section IF THAT) 7. IMPORTANT STEPS to preserve style...A)don’t use a bonnet use a scarf - bonnets allow your hair to move too much and will smush your hair in places you don’t want it to. With a scarf you’re laying your hair down the way it’s going to lay anyway. This also prevents you from having to spray your hair to reshape it B) DONT SPRAY WITH WATER lol - water makes your hair swell back up and lose definition - Each morning I put a dime size amount of oil in my hands and gently pull my hair back into shape I redo this every 4 days. Only takes about 45 mins to go from shampoo to styled. If I didn’t have seborrheic dermatitis my wash n go would last 7 days before it needs to be redone again. I HAVE to do the whole process in the shower because my hair takes better to the wash n go when it’s done immediately after the water is wrung out of the section.

I second this I pretty much do the same exact thing and it works! I'm 4b/4c hair fine/medium strands, low/medium density and low porosity. I actually co wash with as I am cowash every other day and that helps greatly with scapl build up and moisture levels. I think I can say I am now a wash and go girl especially for the summer!

Girlllll....I feel your pain! As an all inclusive type 4(abcdefgh etc) it took me all 5 yrs of being natural to find a wash n go routine that worked for me. I can’t just put her in a bonnet and go to bed (and yes I did say her 🤣). I can’t even do one big pineapple to the front). For it not to look like one big mass and not to be in the shower every other night I have to either do a low ponytail to the back at night then in the morning while getting ready put it in a pineapple toward the front. Once dressed shake her free, aid some oil and fluff-> then I’m good to go. For max stretch I band about 6 sections but not too tight at all b/c I kinda like my edges 😇. The wash n go 🤦🏽‍♀️...it’s like having a part-time job when you try to perfect it. Thumbs up on your content!

I don’t think anyone expects WnGs to last 7 days, so I wouldn’t exactly call it a fail. I average about 3-4 days. I have type 3c/4a and my cousin is like 3a/3b and we don’t try for that amount of time. I don’t think anyone does 🤷🏾‍♀️. Your hair does have to be dry before you pineapple or it will clump.

  • @ravinj8625

Mine come out great but they only last about 3 days! Do mini pineapples 4-5 section, preferably banding method. At night. Don’t sleep on a bunched up wash n go, when you have 4b/c hair 😆. I learned the hard way

I can't follow Anthony Dickey's WnG method. For my hair type 4b/4c my go to person is Alove4me. She has it down to a science. She retains length, no tangles and no need to keep cowashing everyday. My hair has thrived since using her methods.

The other thing I found is that deep conditioning regularly definitely helps. The first time I did a wash and go it turned out slightly defined but dry. I saw a big difference in results after I deep conditioned weekly- improved moisture and definition. I cant manage washing my hair as often as the dickey method requires but I shampoo and deep condition weekly and the style lasts until my next shampoo.

With my hair being as short as it is from my chop the other day...wash n gos are everything. Then take my spay bottle and mist generously then the gel... Brush through with my Denman and I'm good to go. I let it air dry. Take care sis! We have different hair types, but you have taught me a lot. Thank you!

Man I love my fellow type 4 naturals with my whole heart! We spend so much time and money troubleshooting, but you will get there. I usually tie my hair up and away from my face to go to bed, securing it with a couple of rectangular scarves. In the morning i take the scarves off and mostly just shake my hair out, and let it fluff up from the humidity of the day.

Thank you for this video sis! I’ve been natural 8 years and I’m just now trying wash and gos! You’re so informative and gave a real life perspective on how to best do this style! I found myself running into all the same issues you did and I’ve determined that this style is not for me. I, too will stick to the twist outs, braid outs and stretching; I do like the concept of having more moisturized hair and will add a co-wash in the middle of the week!

I wish could chat, we have the exact same hair texture, density, coil type. I became natural in 2013 and it’s 2020 and I just figured out how to do a wash n go on our hair type/texture. Girl, you have to diffuse… or you will have damp hair for days. I’ve thought about investing in the Dyson dryer…. but the coins, the coins. Seriously, I want to tell you what I do, but too much to type, but I can get to last a week or more. Seriously! I wish I could upload a pic to you.

I’m grateful for ur video. New subscriber. Ppl don’t feel my pain when I talk about how I can’t use everything on my head because it makes my scalp itch. It’s soooo aggravating because I can’t keep a style long. Gel, spritz, let’s jAm, etc makes my head itch like crazy. Somebody needs to make a product for ppl with 4c hair, sensitive scalp, and extra dry thin strands.

Girl, I am with you! I have tried to do the “Dickey” method too. You and I have really similar hair and it took soooo long to dry because all of the product! I had to use the dryer the next morning too! It looked good but I got a lot of knots!🤔 I have only done it twice in a year. I can’t do the redo every two days either. I re-moisturize on days 2 - 4 and then the puff comes out until I put it back in twists🤣. Ain’t nobody got time for all that! ( At least my 4c hair doesn’t😪). Great video!

I wasn’t a big fan of how my hair turned out with wash n gos until I watched Kimberly Cherrell’s wash n go series. Even though my texture is different from her’s, the methods are working. I do use a good bit of product, but I don’t put it on my scalp, and working in small sections helps my type 4 curls get great definition...that lasts for days too.

You should try the banding method to stretch out your wash and go! I would love to see it. I use the banding method so I don't have to blow dry as much / wash as much and I think it makes the wash and go last longer. I have 4b hair btw.

😬 you need more product lol. Glad you figured that out. Using enough product helps to keep the curls defined and prevents tangling and matting. Ppl don’t really like crispy-crunchy hair, but having a couples days of crunch at the beginning of the weeks makes the wash n go last for 7 days. My fav gel is uncle funky’s curly magic and I top with i create hold by Innersense. Both are botanical gels without many weird ingredients. My scalp is kind of sensitive. I cannot go past 7 days, or my scalp will be an itchy mess. I style the same way you did, in the shower. But I pay close attention to production saturation and distribution. Dry under a hooded dryer or with a diffuser. My wash day plus detangling and styling in a wash n go takes about 45 minutes and about another 45 minutes to get about 85% dry. Then I let the rest air dry. It gets easier and faster with more practice. 💛

I love that you tried this! I have type 4 hair, but fine strands and medium density. I love the Dickey method because I get great definition and it’s easy. But type 4 naturals should not keep their wash and go for more than 4 days max. Too much dryness and tangles trying to stretch it longer than that. I might let my hair partially air dry but I have to use a dryer. No way I’m leaving my hair that wet for too long. I might sit under a hooded dryer and then dry my roots with a blow dryer or I might air dry for a few hours and then use a diffuser. I put my hair into about 6 mini pineapples to preserve the style or I might band it in sections if I want more stretch. I prefer the more botanical gels such as Kinky Curly Curling Custard, Uncle Funky’s Curly Magic or CRN’s Curl Maker for the Dickey method. I get medium hold that lasts 3 to 4 days, great definition and shine and they don’t dry out my hair like stronger hold gels. Keep at it! You’ll get there.

Wash n go hack for bedtime .... 4 small satin scrunchies. Separate hair in four sections. Two in front two in back . Secure each section loosely with scrunchies . Only place scrunchie on section don’t wrap needs to be loose . Do this to all four sections. Place satin bonnet on head go to bed . Wake up remove bonnet shake or refresh and boom your curls aren’t smashed to your head and flattened underneath your bonnet . Make sure to loosely put scrunchie on and place them higher up hope this helps someone

I do a wash n go every 7 days but it took a bit of trying different methods to get it like that, firstly i use a crap ton of products like i go through bottles of leave in conditioner and creams and gels so fast, however, i don't do anything to my hair those 7 days except band at night take it down in the morning shake my head and go ( i don't even fluff, it will do it by itself after a few days) no oil, no water and my hair doesn't really get dry so thats why i like it and keep doing it. I used to pineapple but that would make my hair look terrible so banding at night, the wrapping in a scarf is the way for me. Everyones hair is different i just took techniques from loads of different methods and adapted the ones i liked to my hair. I had many fails along the way too, like many, and i am still learning,

I have seborrhea dermatitis. I treat my scalp once a week with sulfur. I use a product called “nustock”. Some people have advised against using the product on humans because it has a high sulfur content and it’s made for animals 😳. I know that sounds crazy... but I’ve been using it since 2014 and I am fine 🤷🏽‍♀️. Whenever I get lazy and let months go by without treating my scalp, all h€££ breaks loose on my head... the flare-ups return. Conversely, when I am routine with the treatments, my scalp looks so amazingly healthy and I even notice more growth.

I loved this!! I was a wash and go hater for years and years before I figured out how to do them on my hair. I literally started using the same exact method for my twistouts, then added a gel on top. I used alone vera juice, leave in conditioner, a thick twisting cream, oil, AND THEN put gel on top. I did it in about 8 to 10 sections, let it dry about 1/2 way, then went in and shook my brains out 😂 At night, I put my hair in 4 ponytails under my bonnet and used a tiny bit of oil in the morning to fluff it back out. My hair looked just like yours b4 I dreaded it about a year ago. Don't give up.New subscriber here!! 🥰😍

Hey, love! Got a pro tip for ya... instead of using a bonnet, separate your hair into two sections (down your normal part line), LOOSELY secure each section in a low pouf, and wear a tighter cap that kinda smashes your hair down. When you wake, pull off your cap, loosen the poufs, LIGHTLY spray your hair with water and shake! I swear on my great great Aunty Benjamin's grave this works!

M F I second your advice - except for the light water spray to style (that would revert mine too fast). But I highly recommend sectioning in 2 low puffs before bed, and covering w a satin scarf tied down securely (instead of the bonnet). I wake up, release the two puffs, style w my fingers etc and it’s usually a “win”.
